Bird Experts Needed: A baby sparrow fell onto my porch
56 replies, posted
So, just recently I found a baby sparrow that fell out of its nest on my porch.
I tried getting it back to it's nest but the nest is surrounded by electrical wires that could kill me, so I took it inside and I put it on a blanket and fed it bread that i made mushy with water and gave it water as well. Now he/she is asleep (the gender has yet to be determined)

Now the question remains, what do I do with it now?
And if I have to keep it, will bread suffice or do I have to get other things for it?
I will continually update you guys on the little guys' condition until he is ready to be released (if he/she can be released and IF he/she survives)
I'd call a vet or something, I'm sure they can tell you what to do.

I think it's too late to call anyone right now since its almost 10pm
Start googling that shit because from what Ive heard bread isnt actually very good for birds to eat.
though that may just be bigger birds idk.
Though as it doesnt have feathers it probably wouldnt hurt to find some sort of artificial heat for the thing since if it was in the nest it would have its mothers body heat to keep it warm during the night (though depending on how warm your house is)
I've had some experience with this before, although I'm no professional. What my mother did once a few years ago, she mixed a bit of sugar with some water to encourage it to drink. My friend next to me keeps saying you should eat the bird.
Just gonna make a guess here but I'm guessing you can't just feed a baby sparrow solid foods like bread. I'm sure there are resources on the internet for something exactly like this.
I would just do this
[quote]To care for a baby bird until you can get it to a bird rehabilitation facility, keep it in a warm, dark, quiet place, such as a shoe box with air holes in the lid. [/quote]
until you can call a proper animal shelter
Found a nice website (courtest of Vilusia) that explains a lot of things on caring for sparrows.
But I will take it to a vet first thing tommorow.

Try to make a warm makeshift nest under/near the original nest. I came across a guide recently, which I cannot find, and it said your scent really shouldn't deter the mother. If it's mum can find it again, it may be able to continue taking care of it from there. Best of luck ;w;

The thing is, the nest is surrounded by electrical cables and I don't feel like being zapped to death :v

Found a nice recipe for giving food to the baby
[IMG]http://puu.sh/9T1vl/aceabe6934.jpg[/IMG]
yup
thats a bird
The article says for me to place a towel on top of the container to contain the warmth for the baby
[IMG]http://puu.sh/9T1Kc/93afd9691f.png[/IMG]
So I did just that right now, but I made sure there was space for airflow.

UPDATE:
I gave the baby some more water (it was asking for it) and now its asleep again.
Apparently im gonna have to feed and give water to it at regular 45 min intervals
This is gonna be a long night
Feed it lots of rice.
Nah I'm just being a goof. Don't feed it rice. It'll asplode.
Don't worry about your scent if the mother bird returns, thats an old wives tale.
When the sun starts to rise, try the makeshift nest thing. I knew you said the original nest was in a dangerous area, which is why I said to put a different one somewhere elevated nearby.
Set it in the nest and do some recon; see if any birds come to it in peace. If not, go out and feed it yourself [every half hour or so], then try again. at least until you think its better to seek help from a vet.
Apparently since it's nighttime i DONT have to stay up all night feeding it.
I'll just let it sleep.
And maybe I can get some sleep as well.
Hope nothing happens before sunrise.

That's a good idea but the problem is there's a lot of asshole cats in this area.
I don't want some random cat coming up and eating it when I'm not looking.
Like I said, I'll take it to the vet/animal shelter tommorow

Be careful if you do try to feed it because you can injure it if you don't do it correctly.
Good morning little baby :3

Just woke up and gave him water and fed him.
Gonna talk to a vet friend soon to get info on how to better take care of this little guy.

UPDATE:
Making an oatmeal paste for this little guy/girl so he can get some protein in his body.
[editline]2nd July 2014[/editline]
Little birdy is hungry again
He has to wait until his paste is ready :(
[editline]2nd July 2014[/editline]
Fed the little birdy the paste, looks like he liked it :)
Also gave the bird some more water and now its asleep again
You should raise him yourself and train him to poop on all those who oppose you
Just fed him again and gave him water.
Also placed a warm cotton ball in his "nest" so he can stay warm due to temp drop here
[editline]2nd July 2014[/editline]
Just cleaned some poop from its towel
Might have to give it a small bath soon
[editline]2nd July 2014[/editline]
Fed him/her again and now he/she is asleep
It peed on its towel, ewww
Also, I fed it the paste thing. Not a good idea when just made because it had trouble swallowing so I gave it plenty of water to wash it down it's throat, seems to have worked, now its asleep again
Gotta wait for the paste to be cold before feeding it to it so its hard and not runny
I just want to say, you are a good person.
You are doing things right, I would just get a warmer pad, or one of those hot water pads to place in the box. Just make sure you keep the water warm and not let it go cold.
You should find out of there are any animal sanctuaries in the area, you can hand the bird over to them and they will take good care of it and eventually release it into the wild.

Thanks man.
Ive always loved animals and I just hate the idea of it dying.
I'll look into getting a heat pad to warm the towel so the baby can be warm.
Also there's a nice zoo about 30 min from here, maybe I can see if they can accept the baby for care?
Yep looks like a baby sparrow to me
Replaced birdy's towel with an identical one so he doesn't notice.
It needs to be cleaned :v:
Also I really need to take a shower...
[editline]2nd July 2014[/editline]
Only 5 minutes after towel replacement and the bird has already shit on it :v:
Awesome. Do try and locate an avian sanctuary though.
Also[URL="http://boards.4chan.org/an/catalog"] 4chan's /an/ [/URL]is usually good with this sort of stuff.
Small bits of water soaked in bread can be easier to feed it too.

Posted a thread on /an/ just now.
I'll see if I can get any responses.

Christ some of these threads on /an/ are despressing :(

Ok so according to one guy on /an/ bread isn't nutritious enough for the bird, but wet dog food is.
I'll wait for more responses before I make up my mind.
See what youre going to wanna do is feed the bird for a period of at least 3 weeks.
Feed it mashed butter.
Now get a big bowl.
Pour in 3 cups of armagnac, and drown the bird in the armagnac.
Then boil it IN the armagnac for about 2 hours.
SLOW BOIL, not a hard boil.
Then eat it, bones and all. Pluck it before eating though.

Fuck off.
[editline]2nd July 2014[/editline]
Just bought a heating pad for the baby.
Now he's warm and cozy.
Also I'll have to buy either dog/cat food or baby bird feed and mix them in water for the bird to eat.

Yeah the bread is more of a snack and not a main meal replacement. I should have mentioned that.
he's a sparrow, so they're nests are junk they find on the ground, along with plant materials.
If you need to, you can try and make a mini nest out of dried plant stuff, like dry grass. that should keep him happy. maybe some trash, too, so he learns what his real nest is going to be like.
even though I don't like sparrows, letting anything die is against everything in my book.
thank you, man. this means a lot.
also, more bird pics please.
edit:
try and locate an aviary, and they should be able to help you out. if they can't, any conservation center near you should provide help.
I'll be following this thread.
