Whats your opinion on the man? I've been reading this book on him recently..
Never heard of him.

Who is he?
Hey look a cool drink
Didn't he write the book of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?

Yes; yes he did
Didn't he shoot all of the lights on his street out with an automatic weapon, then cover the weapon with some sort of ballistics gel that disallows fingerprint testing, deliberately handing it to the police after they showed up at his house
or at least this is what I've heard

He was probably one of my favorite journalists just because he was so out there with everything he wrote. I'm not even sure if there are any more gonzo journalists out there anymore.
It was a shame he killed himself, but it made sense with his personality.

He wrote the book 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' as well as many other great novels. He revolutionized journalism with his unique writing called Gonzo. He committed suicide (I believe at age 65) and wrote a book about his experiences in a biker gang (Hells Angels biker gang I think). The gang beat him up for not sharing in the profits because they felt he only did it to write the book. He did a lot of psychedelic drugs. But his most famous drug that can be put to his name is most likely Mescaline (Peyote).
He's pretty cool. Up there with Ken Kesey, Timothy Leary, and those sorts of characters. The footage and quotes I've seen of his are interesting.

Sounds like him. He fancies a revolver of sorts, and likes to threaten his typewriter by force of gunpoint.

Came with the book from the bookstore I got it from; McCabe & Company. A small bookstore for the one horse town I currently reside in.

Well said. It always seemed weird to me to commit suicide at such an old age; but it makes sense.
Don't know much about him, though I know he inspired Dale on KotH, and wrote Fear and Loathing (the book I almost bought, the movie I love).

I could've sworn he killed himself at 50.

Wikipedia says 67, might be accurate..
Hunter S. Thompson was a spectacular journalist. It's a shame most people don't know him beyond Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He has a lot of good work out there that more people need to read, like The Great Shark Hunt, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, The Curse of Lono, etc. etc.
My opinion on him? He was one of the most interesting minds and writers of his time, Gonzo brought something new and fresh to America. Something different. Basically, he was a crazy guy with a pencil.
All I know is that fear and loathing in las vegas is one of the best movies i've ever seen and i need to hurry up and read the book.

Nope, he wanted to kill himself at 50. His death note written 4 days before his suicide talked about how he was "17 years past 50. 17 more than [he] needed or wanted."

I still need to watch that one. I've jus never been a big fan of Bill Murray. He was good in Ghostbusters though.

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"

Nice avatar pic :)
I expected "Who's this Hunter guy?" then I saw that you were reading Gonzo, and I smiled like an idiot. Also, I think that 'Fear and Loathing' should be turned into a graphic novel, with Ralph Steadman as the illustrator.
