• Apple starts to use pentalobe screws on iPhone 4
The more difficult you make it for someone to do something, the more they will try to do it. Case in point: Apple. The tech behemoth, well known for its "look but don't modify" stance on its hardware, is using a new type of screw on the iPhone 4. Why? To keep people from opening up the phone and futzing around with it. The screw, known as the pentalobe, is relatively obscure. And that's the point. Apple apparently wants to use these unusual screws so people who own the iPhones can't open them up. Some might argue that this is like selling someone a car and bolting the hood shut so they can't check the engine. A blog from Digital Trends explains: "Apple repair technicians are reportedly switching the screws on iPhone 4s that are brought in for service to an Apple Store. And, according to the report, Apple is not informing customers about the screw swap. The practice began last fall and has since become widely adopted."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_technews/20110121/tc_yblog_technews/apple-turns-the-screws Kind of interesting, but i don't think it's 100 percent newsworthy.
O...kay? A ton of companies use obscure/proprietary screws. I don't see how Apple using a certain type is anything interesting.
Suddenly pentalobe screwdriver sales skyrocket.
the more apple tries to prevent people from getting in, the more people are going to try and foil them i don't know if you guys get what I mean, but... yeah
That won't work because the folks who are "hardcore" enough to even open up the Iphone are probably hardcore enough to open it at any means necessary. That's like saying gun control will stop violent crimes. No it won't. The criminals will still get their hands on guns.
Some company is already selling screwdrivers that open these :v:
... and?
Well, looks like my pentalobe drivers will have a use now.
The screw, known as the pentalobe, is relatively obscure.
Yeah its like a really obscure, you've probably never even heard of it. </hipster>
Some company is already selling screwdrivers that open these :v:
http://www.ifixit.com/blog/blog/2011/01/20/apples-diabolical-plan-to-screw-your-iphone/ Oh apple when will you learn you can't change things and think people will just roll with it.
Even if you couldn't get a screwdriver, get a fucking toothpick, and some strong glue. And some replacement screws. I mean, if you really, really wanted to get into the phone that's an idea.
What the hell, that's an ugly screw.
That's screwed up. :v: [editline]22nd January 2011[/editline] This is actually pretty fucking stupid. If I had one I'd replace them all with normal screws.
I remember when Nintendo did this with the Y-shaped screws but china retaliated by releasing Y-shaped screwdrivers.
Apple invests in pentalobe screwdriver company, and switches to pentalobe screws. SUDDENLY MONEY EVERYWHERE
$6.99 for a pentalobe screwdriver on Amazon. Problem Apple?
Fuck yer, I have a pentalobe screwdriver.
Oh, really? Edit: If that doesn't work.
Apple sucks balls and this only helps prove it. Let's make products where the users HAVE TO use OUR approved software, OUR approved hardware, and pay OUR ridiculous prices. Now lets make sure they can never tamper with anything at all, even if they don't care about their warranty.
I feel like you could open that screw with a regular screwdriver, it'd just be a little difficult as you'd have to constantly force it downwards while turning it. Even a flat piece of metal that could fit between two of the 5 'lobes' would work even.
Oh shit. We're screwed.
what do you do after you've screwed it open? sounds more like something to prevent untrained people from opening it and breaking it
Well...Why does this really matter? How can screws be better than...they are?
Well...Why does this really matter? How can screws be better than...they are?
It is nothing to do with a screw being better, its the fact its an obscure type of screw (Well apparently not, if you can get it cheap on Amazon). It is just another way for apple to force you to do things in a certain way and limit what you can do with something you have spent a lot of money on. They do it with both software and hardware. In my opinion if you own a piece of hardware you should be free to do what ever you want with it, including taking it apart and turning it into a very expensive paperweight. It is not like apple are doing it to protect anything from people copying it (Its a phone...). Edit: Actually I think I have seen the right type of screwdriver lying around. How obscure is it really?
Kind of interesting, but i don't think it's 100 percent newsworthy.
uh, okay, then why did you post it in the news section?
Call me when they use these: Not before.

Apple uses proprietary technology, old news
So any other company have never used a proprietary screw? For fucks sake.
