• Syrian opposition: 'Massacre' could follow deadline
(CNN) -- Syrian residents in the city of Homs face a deadline to stop anti-government protests, hand in weapons and surrender defecting military members by Monday night -- or face attack by the government forces, an opposition leader said. Syrian forces gave a 72-hour warning, said Lt. Col. Mohamed Hamdo of the Free Syrian Army, an opposition group consisting of defected Syrian military personnel. Activists on the ground said the ultimatum was issued on Friday for Homs, which has been a center of the popular uprising. Hamdo said Syrians are worried about a repeat of what happened in 1982, when Syria's military -- acting under orders from current President Bashar al-Assad's father, Hafez al-Assad -- launched an assault on Hama, killing thousands. "We fear that a similar massacre or worse could take place in Homs," he said. "People are very afraid," said Wissam Tarif, a human rights activist with the organization Avaaz, who is in Beirut, Lebanon and directly in touch with people in Syria. There are enough troops around Homs "to take over the city," he said, and casualties have been increasing "in very big numbers" over the past couple of days. "People are afraid that the army might now invade the city." Hamdo said the military has dug trenches around Homs and largely cut it off. "The situation in Homs is really bad. There is no electricity, water, and the communication lines are much worse. The food supply is also decreasing, mainly because little food is going in," he said. The Syrian National Council, the country's leading opposition movement, had earlier warned of a potential bloodbath in Homs at the hands of the Syrian regime. The Syrian government denied reports of water and electricity being out in the city, according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). The government has not acknowledged a deadline for Homs on state-run media. The Local Coordination Committees of Syria, a network of opposition activists in the country, said Monday that the Syrian Army and security forces killed nine people, including four women, in Homs. State TV, meanwhile, painted a picture of normalcy in Syria, with reports of local elections under way across the country. SANA noted that more than 3,000 candidates are vying for seats in the Homs region alone. It billed the elections as part of the "process of building institutions, promoting democracy and achieving the comprehensive reform process led by President Bashar al-Assad." But there were reports of violence across Syria on Monday. Fierce clashes broke out between security forces and defectors in the cities of Daraa and Idlib, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The organization collects information from people in different parts of the country. Hamdo of the Free Syrian Army said, " We conducted an operation late last night against the Syrian Forces in Idlib and killed eight of them and injured 22. Two of our men are critically injured. " Syrian forces were conducting mass arrests of shop-owners who shut their stores Sunday as part of a nationwide anti-government strike, Hamado said. Sunday on SANA, the Syrian government quoted people across the country saying there was no strike and no sign of a strike. The Local Coordination Committees of Syria said gunfire and tanks centered on checkpoints in Daraa. SANA reported that "seven army, security and police martyrs" killed "by armed terrorist groups" in Homs, Hama, the Damascus countryside, and Daraa were taken "to their final resting place in their hometowns and villages." SANA also said "competent authorities" in Daraa Province killed four gunmen and wounded others who were attempting "to influence the local elections atmosphere and spread tension." Throughout the uprising, Syria has insisted it is not targeting peaceful protesters and instead cracking down on armed terrorist gangs. The state-run news agency also accused "an armed terrorist group" of killing the director of a gas station in Homs on Sunday. "Meanwhile, the authorities in Homs who hunt the terrorist groups stormed one of the dens of the armed men at al-Areda Village in Tal Kalakh, killing one of them, arresting others and confiscating their weapons," SANA said, adding that the "terrorists" had targeted law enforcement. SANA also reported instances of authorities clashing with gangs and killing some terrorists in other cities. Reports of deaths between demonstrators and government forces have escalated over nine months as protesters demand democratic elections and the end of al-Assad's regime. Al-Assad has been in power since 2000; his father, Hafez, ruled Syria for three decades. The United Nations said this month that more than 4,000 people have died in Syria since the crackdown began in mid-March. CNN cannot independently confirm events because the Syrian government restricts access of international media to the country. The Arab League announced it will hold emergency meetings this week in Cairo. In a statement on Egypt's state-run MENA news agency, an Arab League official said leaders will "discuss the Arab response to a message from Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem to approve the signing of an agreement on an Arab League observing mission to Syria with conditions." World leaders have widely condemned Syria's crackdown and called on it to halt violence against the opposition. On Saturday, France expressed its concerns about events in Syria, and it warned against Syria launching a military operation against the city of Homs and its population, the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Israeli President Shimon Peres on Sunday described Syria's president as a "killer," implicitly comparing him to Libya's ousted ruler Moammar Gadhafi. "The world decided -- including the Arab world -- to intervene when a leader is beginning to kill his own citizens," Peres told CNN in an interview. "It happened in Libya; it's happening in Yemen; it's happening by the Arab League, for the first time in their experience. They decided to put pressure on an Arab state because the leader is killing his people."
Source: http://www.cnn.com/2011/12/12/world/meast/syria-unrest/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 I wonder why FP isn't going nuts over Syria right now like they did with Libya
I wonder why FP isn't going nuts over Syria right now like they did with Libya
Seems to be less media attention to the whole thing than Libya. Plus the UN or NATO isn't taking action.
If I were there, I'd do a last stand. What have they got to lose? They know if they surrender, they face extreme punishment as a result. Risk it fighting and have a small chance of victory would seem less severe for me. They know the massacre happened before, I don't think they'll take that kindly this time around. If they lose this one in the moral sense of things, the Syrian regime can only grow worse.
Great, before you know it we'll be launching yet another invasion to "help" and "liberate" the people.

They need NATO backing otherwise they are walking into a slaughterhouse.

Divide and conquer: America pours money into a friendly nation and gets overly unfair economic agreements in turn. Population gets angry at loss of sovereignty Dicatorship/Unfriendly government gains power America stops pouring money in Population gets mad that at loss of economy and political rights America bombs them to "help free the people" America instates a friendly government and gets more economic agreements. Wash and repeat No matter what, America wins. Of course we end up losing a lot of troops and a lot of civilians get killed - but what really matters is that America gets rich :v:

Syria on fire Syria, along with Lybia, stays the main spotlight in the news column. And we are getting more and more bad news from there, too. Moreover, the events in this country are now menacingly often making the story-of-the-day in the news coverage. So what is happening out there? It’s simple as that. One group of “peaceful demonstrators” with sniper guns and automatic rifles is killing other “peaceful demonstrators”. The scenario is old as the hills. With the help of money and drugs they gather the first demonstration which of course needs some “democratization”. The roofs along the rout of the demonstration are equipped with several “unknown snipers”. Here we are – the victims of the “bloody regime” are ready. Next demonstration will already comprise those sincerely appalled by the deaths of the innocent. Some more shootings – and here we go again. A distinctive trait of the routine – it is impossible to satisfy the demands of the “demonstrators”. For example, in Syria: “The government has met the demands of the opposition and cancelled the state of emergency, which had been in place for the last 48 years. However the protests in the country did not cease”. And they will not cease, because what the provokers, financed from abroad, need is destabilization, chaos and the government overthrow, not “the changes”. There is no use in coming to terms with the armed “peaceful demonstrators”. The only sensible way is to eliminate them. It can be useful to remember that when in 1905-1907 Russia was witnessing the same uncontrolled state of explosions, attacks and murders, it all came to an end only after the introduction of the military field courts. When the trials took place right at the scene of crime with the minimum of formalities, provided that the crime was evident, and the sentence was enforced immediately. And the revolution stopped. Is it possible to do the same in Syria? The answer is “no”. The mentality there differs a lot. But the Syrian authorities realize that the order can only be restored with the use of power and force. That is why tanks and troops have been brought into the town of Daraa, where it’s especially “hot”. What is interesting – it has been done on request from the local population, who are suffering from chaos and murderous banditism. You can also read a report about my speech on channel “Russia Today” where I told my Arabic audience how the USA and Great Britain have been using “unknown snipers” to escalate the tensions and “create a revolution”. I’d like to point out that our efforts in breaking through the information blockade, mentioned in “Syria: Unknown Snipers Rebuffed”, were of really great help to Syria. And I sincerely hope that it will still be of help to other Arabic countries, because according to the Anglo-Saxon “revolution” scenario, they have to take place in as many countries of the region as possible, ideally everywhere. The Syrian sites actively started publishing the scripts from my interview to “RT”. And the information about “unknown snipers” and the USA and Great Britain standing behind it, was spread among the mainstream audience. Here are the links to the publications (in Arabic). - an article of the Syrian Information Agency SANA, about my interview to “RT” - “A Russian expert says the USA use snipers to shed blood on demonstrations” - “Through shedding blood in the streets… an expert from Russia draws attention to the fact that demonstrators are killed in all Arabic countries” - an article “the USA use “unknown snipers” to control the discontent in Arabic countries” - a Russian expert: “The USA are destroying the Arabic world using Aljazeera”. On April 26, Syrian State Television broadcasted a report explaining the Syrians who those “unknown snipers” killing their sons really are. The broadcast told in plain speak about the “unknown snipers”, about their appearance in various Arabic countries and the USA secret services involvement in the revolution plots. And the information stared to SPREAD. Meanwhile the Syrians started taking concrete steps. They “take” the snipers off the roofs, deploy the troops, switch off the Internet, and arrest the human rights “advocates” who keep stirring people up constantly exaggerating the casualties. When it comes to news from Syria it is easy to see the lie which is being told. Here are some examples of information presented by the world media. - “One of Homsa residents told BBC over the phone… ” - “The same methods were used to disperse demonstrations in other towns”. “I saw people falling down on the ground, six people or more at a go, and those who tried to help them, were also shot down” – this is what a woman from Damascus told BBC, asking not to give her name. – One of them was wounded, but when somebody tried to help him, a security officer fired a gun at him twice, to finish him off. Then we all made a run for it”. The signs of a lie are as follows: - the information is provided either by BBC or by Aljazeera; - the information is always based on witness reports. Then this information is repeated in the world mass-media (including Russian media) with the reference to… BBC or Aljazeera. And now it has all obtained the status of the TRUTH… Another thing is constant reference to “human right activists”, who are always ready to give the exact number of casualties. As though, they keep their vigil at every morgue. Syrian sources of information, however, don’t drop a word. Let’s sort the wheat from the chaffs. This is what Syrian media says about the events on April 25 – 26, 2011. “Towns and villages in Syria mourning their sons killed by armed criminals” According to the official source of military forces CAP, on April, 24 eight security officers killed by armed criminals were bid final farewell in the military hospital “Tishrin”. Seven of them had fallen victims of the terrorist groups in Nava, the province of Daraah. One was killed in a village Muaddamia, near Damascus. Doctor Akram-Ash-Shaar from Tishrin stressed that the bodies of the dead soldiers were severely mutilated, which contradicts all possible religious and moral norms. Ash-Shaar specified that they had fire-gun wounds in the head, chest and the back, and also multiple stabbings. In the province of Tartus the relatives paid their final respects to the victims of armed bandits in the Damascus quarter of Jobar. Their names are Ibragim Hanash and Vail Isa from villages Soda and Said Shahin from the village Shas. They were neither soldiers nor security officers – they simply brought their strawberry crop to one of the markets in Damascus”. 2. Daraa requests for help – Army troops enter the town. According to the official source of military forces CAP, in response to the appeals of dwellers of Daraa asking to put an end to murders and destroying objects of the state and private property, to terrorizing the population by extremist terror groups, several regiments of the State Army were brought into the town of Daraa on April, 25, to restore peace, safety and normal life of its citizens. The source marked that the armed regiments together with the national Security forces keep tracking the members of the armed criminals. Many of those have already been detained; moreover a lot of weapons and munitions have been confiscated. As a result of the fire-fight the soldiers and security officers there are wounded and dead among”. 3. TV companies use “witness reports” against Syria. Millions of people watching certain Arabic and foreign channels are witnessing an outrageous disinformation campaign about the latest events in Syria with the reference to the so-called witnesses. These channels have surpassed all possible criteria of information objectivity in their pursuit to instigate hatred in the Syrian society, using the weapon of provocation against Syria. Aljazeera channel fabricated a deceitful report, based on the words of the so-called witness Abu-Kasim from Daraa, about three Syrian generals studying a plan of taking control over the town on a veranda of one of the houses. However the same witness admitted he was 400 meters away from the building at the time. The TV channel gave false information about the Syrian Army opening fire on passers-by, ignoring the fact that it was the armed terrorist group who opened fire on security officers and the soldiers of the Syrian Army. The arrested criminals admitted the fact that Aljazeera supplied them with the modified mobile phones to make it easier for them to share fabricated news from the scene of the event. The whole of TV audience saw how one of the so-called “witnesses” started his report from Daraa, after which he exposed himself performing as a witness of the situation in the town of Jebly, the province of Lattakia, with the distance between the towns being about 400 kilometers. It’s all evidence to the fact that at the present time Syria is subject to a massive disinformation attack, organized by hostile foreign circles aiming at destabilizing situation and weakening the national unity”. 4. «Syrian Doctor Ammar Aga from the town of Geble reported in an interview to a satellite TV channel that a man impersonating him phoned Aljazeera to report about events having allegedly taken place in Geble. Ammar Aga was outraged and confirmed that he didn’t call that channel, he criticized such dirty methods of spreading lies and blackwash in order to instigate hatred in Syria.» 5. «In a statement to a Tunisian newspaper “Ash-Shuruk” a TV journalist Hassan Ben-Jiddu confirmed that the reason for his leaving Aljazeera was his attitude to the of-late editorial policy to the coverage of events in the region. Hassan Ben Jiddu condemned the coverage of events taking place in Bahrain and Syria and provocative campaigns having been carried out as regards some countries. He underlined that this policy is telling badly on the professional reliability and objectivity of the channel. The newspaper is quoting: “The TV channel Aljazeera has been playing a very suspicious part in the events taking place in Syria, fabricating the events that never took place and engaging false witnesses”. Now you can read true information about the events taking place in Syria: the Syrian TV agency SANA has set up its site also in English: http://sana.sy/index_eng.html To get a complete idea about what’s going on, you can watch a video about “unknown snipers” in Syria: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaUzpTNEvuM – one of the locals recorded a group of people walking around a neglected building in the town of Duma, a suburb of Damascus with their faces covered. He went up to the roof and started shooting down the demonstrators. Some security officers noticed him and when they were coming up to arrest him the man opened fire. He killed one and wounded the other. Finally the rascal got arrested. Once again, I’ am addressing all of you! Please spread the truth about what is going on. The bell is tolling not only for the Syrians, not only for the Arabs. The bell is tolling for all of us. If the chaos and the “revolutions” start taking over, they will inevitably be “brought in” to Russia. And my advice to those who think it’s good – please look at the faces of the kids who American bombs have left without legs and arms. Look into Syrian graveyards were the relatives bury those naïve young people who followed the provokers in search of “freedom” but ended up with a bullet from an “unknown sniper”. Think it over. And help putting an end to the chaos. Help putting an end to the revolution. We must prevent it from happening again. It is very important to knock every door to explain what is actually going on for everyone to understand it. Write to mass-media, give your explanation. We have managed to overcome the news blockade in Lybia, we shall combat the lies about Syria. Here there are materials to spread: A video about WIKILEAKS in English http://www.youtube.com/user/maestroclub#p/u/7/1wrTp9Lif7Q Libya – photo-investigation in Russian. And now again, we’re becoming witnesses of their new attempts to halt the trend in Syria for their own benefit. That is towards chaos and anarchy. The overthrow of the Syrian government and coming into power of Muslim radicals – is a necessary key to launching a full-scale Arab-Israel war. The main adversary for Israel should be Egypt and Syria. In Egypt the process got stuck. Meanwhile in Syria we can see a new “round” of destabilizing the country, now for good. As usual, the operations of the inner “opposition”, that is murders and terrorists, are in perfect coordination with the “independent” mass-media. So, what’s going on? This time, instead of “unknown snipers” and their shooting at demonstrators, the stake is placed on launching a full-blown civil war. The perfectly equipped Islamists took by way of accomplished fact power in some localities. There were cases of violence and murders based on religion and nationality. However, the moment the legitimate government starts restoring order – BBC, Al-Jazira and the Syrian “opposition” begin shrilling about mass murders by government forces. The latest news from Syria is coming from the town of Hama. It’s a particular place, it’s always been the stronghold of Muslim Brotherhood. As far back as the father of the present Syrian President, who had to put down an Islamist revolt in this town. And this time again – superbly weaponed militants have taken this major place under control. I underline the fact that the Syrian opposition is based in Turkey and are in fact a couple of “intellectuals”. Whereas the murders in the streets of Syrian towns are by no means committed by “peaceful demonstrators” or “representatives of opposition”, but by real bandits and butchers. You can (although, better not) watch the horrible things done by these animals in the videos below… The calculation is simple: the official Damascus is losing the game anyway. If they don’t suppress the violence – they lose control over the situation. If they suppress it – they get charges in violence, then sanctions and attempts of external invasion. Soldiers of the Syrian Army killed in Ziis-Al-Shugur on the Turkish border. 2. “Peaceful demonstrators” killed a policeman in the town of Deir-Al-Zor and are mutilating his corpse. 3. Seven policemen murdered by “the opposition to the regime” are being thrown down into the river Al-Assi in the town of Hama. Some of the policemen have their throats cut. The first Russian channel showed this coverage about Syria but didn’t specify who was who! The so-called “opposition” downloaded this video on their pages in Facebook, explaining that it was the way the government soldiers put the corpses of the peaceful citizens. However in ten minutes this video disappeared – the “opposition” understood that they were “giving away” themselves. 4. The video shown by the Syrian TV. It’s dated as 31 July, 2011. The town of Hama. The coverage demonstrates that the so-called “revolutionaries” have set up block-posts at the entrance to the town and that they are armed to the teeth. And they have already fixed the gallows. The Western mass-media have accused the Syrian Army of shooting the town of Hama on 31, July and bringing in tanks one day prior to Ramadan. The Syrian government declared that it did not shoot the town and did not bring in the tanks. To create a “picture” the “peaceful demonstrators” burnt the rubber from the wheels and videoed the smoke from some distance, later downloading this fake in the Internet as if it had been the smoke from the shooting. 5. Horrible snaps, shot in the town of Hama. The government forces entering the town found a slaughter of people bodies pieces, all of them having been murdered by “peaceful demonstrators”.
