Thuban will be a tweaked desktop version of AMD's istanbul chip.
it is said to have many features including an answer to intels turbo boost dubbed dynamic speed boost and wont cost the world either (set to cost £299) so around £220 at a guess.. there has been musch speculation about clock speeds and performance but new information is coming out all the time.. AMD have kept a tight lid on this.. for others interested there will be a replacement quadcore too called Zosma which will be a locked hexacore... .. @ 2.8ghz it has been leaked that it is not 140w tdp.. not 125w tdp but just 95w tdp!!and there is set to be a 3ghz version shipping with 125w tdp.. overclocking these will be interesting... release is set for around the same time as 890FX 26th april.

Seems awesome
Phenom II X6 = Can't wait
For some reason I misread the thread title as "AMD turban" first :ohdear:
I love AMD and ATI, They release such fucking great hardware with tiny power supply demand.
I hope my mobo supports them
I might need to get some DDR3 ram and a new Mobo with this cpu.
Overclock
Set frozen burrito on top of case
Wait half an hour
Eat deliciously cooked burrito
Nice, this (or a later version) might be my next upgrade.
I'll wait for an Athlon II X6 because I'm cheap.
6 cores seems a bit too predictable, underpowered, and I was expecting an 8 or 12 core CPU. Quads have been the norm for so long, 8 or 12 cores seems easily doable, even on a 45nm level.

:downs:
12 cores seems a little much. I would have given it a bit more time to go to 8, even. But 8 does seem like the logical next step.
Thuban?
What a terrible name.

I'm not sure about AMD's naming schemes, but being a former intel employee and living near 2 intel plants, I have noticed they like to name their chip series' after places here in Oregon. I have a Prescott-based Pentium 4, and Prescott beach is where I fish for sturgeon and steelhead. Nehalem is a river here in Oregon. You get the idea. I have always wondered if AMD does the same, being based in California.

???
AMD processors have always been very power hungry. Not as bad as the high end Pentium 4s, but still pretty bad. Phenom II Quads are 125-140W, and even though i7s are 130W, they have more efficient power saving methods and use less power overall.
The stock cooler on the Phenom II is pretty poor too, I built my friend a Phenom II 945 system last year and the fan constantly revs up to 100% during any sort of load and belches out heat like a furnace. I haven't seen a CPU with heat issues like that since my old Celeron D machine years ago.
AMD does have some bang for your buck processors, but they make up for it in heat and power usage.

My favorite was the Tualatin core <3
Bloomfield <3

They have already released 8 and 12 core server cpus, but the thing here is that this high number of cores comes at a price. First, they're just 2x four or six core processors stuck together. Second, the clockspeed has to be a lot lower to keep the power consumption within reasonable limits. For home use, six cores at nearly 3GHz is a lot better than twelve cores at 2 GHz.

Oh come on it is sooo close to turban. :downs:
screw getting a phenom 2 965 i'm getting one of these fuckers.
Freaking awesome, this gives me time to save up some exrtra money for my build so I can get one of these in my system.
Its about time AMD had a contender for the i5's and i7's
I just hope that they won't get too hot.
My brother has an AMD computer and when he's using it to play EverQuest 2 of all things it gets near 90 C and heats up the room like a bitch.

Fits, their X4s are called Deneb which is another star.

sorry i dont know what laguage it is so i cant translate, if someone can traslate it, greatly appreciated
Thuban, meet Gulftown, you may have heard of each other.
But really, Gulftown would reign supreme (in Practical use and benchmarks, not market wise) due to higher clock, smaller die and MAJORLY strong performance.

basically, the thing goes for about 229-300 euros. and thats the top of the line black edition which is the Phenom II X6 1090T. 3.3(normal)->3.6(TURBOCORE) GHz. still no word on performance.
PS:
TURBOCORE
It's probably better than my i7 920 and it will probably be cheaper to get a setup with thuban.
Why would you get an entire new mobo when you can just get a i9 hexacore
Why would you get an entire new mobo when you can just get a i9 hexacore
because buying a whole new system for a phenom x6 would be cheaper than getting an i7 980x
Why would you get an entire new mobo when you can just get a i9 hexacore
Prob cause the i9 alone will be more expensive than a whole PC with thuban.
