The Australian investment giant Macquarie Capital Group wants to move ahead with plans to finish Utah’s troubled fiber-optic network known as UTOPIA and deliver lightning-speed data, video and voice capacity to 155,000 homes and businesses in UTOPIA’s member cities.

UTOPIA — short for the Utah Telecommunications Open Infrastructure Agency— was conceived by city officials 12 years ago to give businesses and homes access to Internet download and upload speeds of one gigabit per second, some 200 times faster than rates available at the time from private vendors.
The network has sputtered for more than a decade, dampened by mismanagement, construction failures that left the grid partly built, sour deals with vendors and low sign-up rates from potential subscribers. An even bigger problem has been its heavy debt.
Bonds issued to build the network have racked up more than $500 million in public debt, backed by city sales and franchise taxes but meant to be paid off by revenue from a customer base that has never fully materialized. In recent years, UTOPIA managers even enlisted attorneys to study the costs of closing the network down.
Macquarie entered the picture in late 2013.
Basically, the Gigabit internet some cities are enjoying right now, just got a potentially massive funding boost, meaning Utah could become the first state to have Gigabit internet services in all major cities.

While you're doing that, how about you be a little bit more local and finish the Liberal NBN's troubled fibre network
Obviously Mormons are way more important than all of Australia
This sounds awesome.
I hope it happens statewide. I left Provo just before Google Fiber was up and running.
Yeah I live close to Provo where they got Fiber. I'm hoping they put it out here in Eagle Mountain, especially since we're starting to develop more as a city now.
Though with my luck, by the time they've done it, I'll be out at college :/

It just happened that Utah had a somewhat developed fibre infrastructure from early on, so Macquarie came in and sorta saved it from even further debt, this also means that it will roll out to other cities much faster.
UofU was one of first internet nodes, and Novell, and many other important companies in the internet's history were operated here, and so many of the people who founded and worked in those companies, realized the value of having state-wide fiber, so a few of them went on to found UTOPIA. It took a lot more money and a lot longer for things to pan out, and they've only been sustaining for a long time. the deal should make fiber a reality for all the other cities soon.
It'll probably chase Google Fiber from SLC, but I'd rather have the ability to choose from 4 providers via UTOPIA's fiber, than only 1 (Google). Plus you can get service from companies like Xmission, who've had a fantastic track record of being anti-NSA spying.

It's now supposed to roll out to the current member cities in "30 months", member cities are as follows:
Brigham City, Centerville, Layton, Lindon, Midvale, Murray, Orem, Payson, Tremonton, West Valley City.

FTFY.
I can only hope that Gigabit hits Australia within the next two decades... if we're lucky.

That's not as profitable though.
I've also heard Utah is the state where people watch porn more frequently than any other US state or something, wonder if that's related :v:

Utah just has a lot of people that are into tech.

At least you don't have to look at their awful flag anymore
