The black bar is going away in favour of this: [t]http://imgkk.com/i/foii.png[/t] [t]http://puu.sh/4vacV.png[/t] At first the logo was thought to be a 'special' version, used in places where shading didn't look good: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/09/the-flat-google-logo-redesign-appears-legit-its-spreading-across-google/
A few days ago, I dug a new Google logo out of a Chrome Beta Android APK. The new logo did away with all the beveling and shadowing for a flat, clean look with more muted colors. It would be the first Google logo tweak since 2010. Shortly after the story was posted, The Verge updated their coverage of the news with the following:
Update: A person familiar with Google's branding tells The Verge that this is not a replacement for the company's traditional logo. Instead, the flatter design is used in instances where the beveled logo may not display well — such as on printed banners or other corporate use cases. The logo in question has been already pulled from where it first appeared in the latest Chrome for Android beta, signaling that the company quickly realized its mistake. Suffice it to say, the Google logo you know and love isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
However, since the article was posted, we've been seeing more and more evidence that doesn't seem to fit this explanation. While the logo is not currently in use in Chrome for Android Beta, it is still being distributed in the APK, even after an update. If it was a mistake, we would expect it to be removed from the app. It's also important to note that the Chrome APK contains no other Google logos; there are only flat versions.
But they've now started rolling it out along with the new navigation menu. Here's how you can get it right now:
Here's how you can enable the new logo and the new navigation interface. If you use Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari or Internet Explorer 8+: 1. open google.com in a new tab 2. load your browser's developer console: * Chrome or Opera 15+ - press Ctrl+Shift+J for Windows/Linux/ChromeOS or Command-Option-J for Mac * Firefox - press Ctrl+Shift+K for Windows/Linux or Command-Option-K for Mac * Opera 12 - press Ctrl+Shift+I for Windows/Linux or Command-Option-I for Mac, then click "Console" * Safari - check this article * Internet Explorer - press F12 and select the "Console" tab. 3. paste the following code which changes a Google cookie: document.cookie="PREF=ID=e66a207a51ceefd8:U=936bafc98b2a9121:FF=0:LD=en:NR=10:CR=2:TM=1378808351:LM=1379592992:SG=1:S=OXyq0fqClYB66VuV ; path=/; domain=google.com";window.location.reload(); 4. press Enter and close the console. To go back to the regular interface, use the same instructions, but replace the code from step 3 with this one: document.cookie="PREF= ; path=/; domain=google.com";window.location.reload();
If you didn't post this I might not have noticed the logo changed. But it does look better.
Finally. The font without effects just looks more modern and suits Google better.
the new logo looks way better
If you didn't post this I might not have noticed the logo changed.
Google is good at keeping their logo modern without anyone noticing they've changed it (1998-1999) (1999-2010) (2010-2013) (2013-)
Had the new navigation for a few weeks now. I hated it at first but it's alright. It feels like a little more hassle to use.
Please let that dropdown menu be customizable. I can't stand clicking 5 times to reach something that took me 1 click.
I hope it's better than the recent Youtube player update that changed nothing besides requiring two more clicks to do the same things as before.
Had the new navigation for a few weeks now. I hated it at first but it's alright. The only thing I'd like changed about the new page is having Drive on the bar at the top.
Please let that dropdown menu be customizable. I can't stand clicking 5 times to reach something that took me 1 click.
I am sorry, but that's so much "white people problems".
Didn't they try to get rid of the black bar before? I think the new thing's kinda a hassle, needless extra clicks. New logo's cool though, I find it interesting that everything tech related seems to be going flatter and more simplistic.
In other news, Google had completely overhauled YouTube's layout since it's Thursday again.
How to make your logo modern: remove all of the effects you did in photoshop
wtf is going on with google, and other companies everything that was 3D-ish becomes 2D
I am sorry, but that's so much "white people problems".
I use Google a good 40-50 times a day - I want my experience to be as smooth as possible. If I sound pretentious, so be it.
Its weird how everyone thought 3D-ish shiny logos looked good for a while and everyone used them, and now everyone is going for the flat matte looking logos. The same thing happened with Chrome (and a lot of other logos).
wtf is going on with google, and other companies everything that was 3D-ish becomes 2D
now that we have the technology of rendering gradients in modern browsers everyone is switching back to flat colors again
I think its a bit funny how googles new "modern" flat logo is praised, but every other company that did it was flamed
I think its a bit funny how googles new "modern" flat logo is praised, but every other company that did it was flamed
I was expecting everyone to hate it
I am sorry, but that's so much "white people problems".
Interestingly enough, Google occupies and hosts so much of the world's internet infrastructure and energy production that requiring everyone to click a few extra times to reach a certain service could have serious implications :v:
I was expecting everyone to hate it
It doesn't look like someone typed the company name with whatever default font Photoshop/GIMP/Word had. It retains what made the Google logo memorable, unlike Yahoo doing wtf they were doing.

Could you please thumb these pictures, thank you.
It doesn't work for me.
I was expecting everyone to hate it
I hate it.

It just doesn't translate well as a shape at icon size. Personally I don't like the shading on the almost-flat one, feels like cheap soft plastic also over-the-top shiny logos are the bane of graphic design freelancers because there's tons of websites that advertise doing 'cheap' logo work and show tons of retardedly overworked things, so clients find those and ask why you're charging so much [sp]the answer is that you're designing things to their specifications like a professional instead of slapping your preferred colors onto pre-made designs in a stock library[/sp]
