He hatched a Facebook ruse that drew the 30-year-old Federal Way man to Spokane earlier this month. Then the father and a couple of his buddies staked out the arranged meeting spot and blocked the man's escape until police arrived. The Spokesman-Review (http://bit.ly/190xaXm) reports that the suspect, identified in court documents as Jason D. Richards, faces charges of child rape and attempted kidnapping in Spokane County Superior Court. He is jailed on a $100,000 bond. The newspaper did not publish the name of the girl or her family. The relationship began in April through a Facebook dating application called "Are You Interested" and was discovered earlier this month by the parents, court records show. Richards and the girl exchanged hundreds of Facebook messages, communicated via YouTube, met face-to-face in May and then made plans to elope, court records show. When the girl's parents discovered the relationship on June 7, they took their daughter's computer and locked her out of her Facebook account. The mother then continued to message the man, posing as her daughter, and persuaded him to go through with the runaway plan. When he arrived at the family's Spokane home in the early hours of June 8, the girl's father and two of his friends were waiting for him in an alley behind the house. They held him until police arrived
short article so i posted it whole.
But they were ~in love ~
That would just suck as a parent to see that their kid was doing something like this.
...faces charges of child rape and attempted kidnapping in Spokane County Superior Court...
For speaking with her?
For speaking with her?
Nah man. They were planning to fuck.
...faces charges of child rape and attempted kidnapping in Spokane County Superior Court..
This is ridiculous 15 is legal in most of the world anyway; there really needs to be some sort of legal distinction between actual child rape and consensual sex with teenagers.
This is ridiculous 15 is legal in most of the world anyway; there really needs to be some sort of legal distinction between actual child rape and consensual sex with teenagers.
In most of America, it's 16 with there being like an eight year limit on age, till 18. He would have still gotten charged if her parents didnt approve and she was 16.
For speaking with her?
"Richards allegedly acknowledged to investigators he knew the girl was underage when he had sex with her during his May 18 trip to Spokane." http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2013/jun/19/facebook-ruse-halts-kidnap/

A man who might have had consensual sex with a 15 year old is receiving the same charge as if he had brutally raped a toddler, clearly some sort of change in the law is required to address such situations.
Would you want your 15 year old daughter fucking some random 30 year old guy
Would you want your 16 year old daughter fucking some random 30 year old guy? Because that would be legal in most of America. I don't think parents should decide who their children date. But to answer your question, if it was legal, I wouldn't stand in the way of love.

Even if it was legal I don't think a 30 year old soliciting teenage girls for sex over Facebook has the greatest of intentions. She's lucky she wasn't kidnapped or something.

It creates so many legal absurdities; you can be charged with statutory rape if you have sex with a 17 year old in some states but not be charged if you have sex with a 16 years old in other states. It's even more ridiculous in Europe; the age of is 13 in Spain and 18 in Ireland. So clearly there is no real consensus on what age it is acceptable for someone to have sex so when the age is so close to the local age of consent their should be some sort of relaxing of the law, because having consensual sex with a 15 year old is not the same as raping a child so it shouldn't be punished the same way.

It's perfectly legal to have sex with a 15 year old in France for example or a 14 year old in Germany or a 13 year old in Spin or a 12 year old in Mexico or even a 9 year old in Yemen, providing your married. In fact in Portugal, your home country if the flag on your profile is to be believed, the age of consent is 14.

You won't be charged at all. Once you have sex with someone below that age, you've committed the crime(statutory rape) and how underage they are is irrelevant. Your idea has other flaws. What age should be the cutoff age for it to be as bad as brutally raping a toddler? 10? 9? 8? 2? 1 1/2? Once you pick a number, explain why THAT number is the one that should be the dividing line. I bet your number turns out to be every bit as arbitrary as the ones we have now.

So if your local age of consent was for example 15 you would be punished less harshly for having a relationship with a 14 year old than you would be for having a relationship with a 12 year old.
In fact in Portugal, your home country if the flag on your profile is to be believed, the age of consent is 14.
Well, I knew the consent age was 14 but I gotta admit I did not know there wasn't a max age limit here.
You're defending the act of pedophilia, that's fucked up.
Pedophilia by definition is sex with children not teenagers.
Pedophilia by definition is sex with children not teenagers.
A 30 year old banging a 15 year old is absolutely wrong.
A 30 year old banging a 15 year old is absolutely wrong.
That's your opinion and your entitled to it but it is still legal in most of the world and regardless of that it still isn't pedophilia.
Now watch as this guy's lawyer counter-charges(or tries too) the parents with vigilantism and identity theft(Since they used their daughter's account).
yes it is
If we decide if someones a pedophile or not based on local law it would be ridiculous. Someone who had sex with a 20 year old in Tunisia would be a pedophile but someone who had sex with a 9 year old in Yemen would not.
I agree with Aidan, cultures in other parts of the world view underaged sex differently and have different consent ages, if any at all. For instance in the U.S when we see a guy in his 30s or 40s in the Middle East getting married to a girl who just entered puberty, we view it as disgusting and wrong but to them it's normal.
A 30 year old banging a 15 year old is absolutely wrong.
Thank you for proving you've no concept of moral relativism. You think it's wrong, probably because you think its gross. I bet the guy who committed this crime doesn't think its wrong, and he's just as entitled to make that decision as you are; which is to say not at all. All you can do in these situations is pass laws which reduce the potential harm, and I think that charging someone who raped a 8 year old the same way you'd charge someone who had "consensual" (Yes, I know it isn't strictly consensual) sex with a 15 year old unnecessarily harms people who just happen to have gotten on the wrong side of a totally arbitrary number. If you take the case of the girl who ran away to France with her teacher, she seemed to be in love with the guy. Sure, it's not ideal, and there's more sensible things they could have done, but now the guy is being charged with kidnapping simply because she happened to be some 6 months away from a totally arbitrary age. Not that it really matters, the vast majority of the world disagrees with you.
