SAN ANTONIO -- Presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Thursday said Republicans should give President Barack Obama another term if Santorum isn't the GOP nominee and for a second day compared rival Mitt Romney to an Etch A Sketch toy.Santorum reiterated an argument he has made before: The former Massachusetts governor is not conservative enough to offer voters a clear choice in the fall election and that only he can provide that contrast."You win by giving people a choice," Santorum said during a campaign stop in Texas. "You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who's just going to be a little different than the person in there."Santorum added: "If they're going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk of what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future."Santorum was referencing Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom's comment Wednesday that "everything changes" for the fall campaign. "It's almost like an Etch A Sketch," he said on CNN. "You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again."The remark reignited criticism of Romney as the type of politician who will say or do anything to win.Romney, who made no public appearances Thursday, issued a statement expressing disappointment "that Rick Santorum would rather have Barack Obama as president than a Republican.""This election is more important than any one person. It is about the future of America," he said. "Any of the Republicans running would be better than President Obama and his record of failure."Rival Newt Gingrich tweeted: "Rick Santorum is dead wrong. Any GOP nominee will be better than Obama."
During his speech to employees of USAA, a San Antonio-based insurance and financial services firm, Santorum briefly held up an Etch A Sketch and said his positions don't change like etchings on the toy, which are erased with a shake. He could be seen fiddling with the toy's knobs in the intervals between questions from audience members.Addressing reporters afterward, Santorum lit into Romney for saying "I'm going to run as a conservative.""He didn't say `I am a conservative.' He said `I'm going to run as a conservative.' So what do you do, you just sort of decide what you're going to be for the elections?" Santorum asked. "No one can accuse me of that. People say, `Well, you can't win because of that.' No, I will win because of it."Santorum said his brand of political authenticity will play well in Texas because "people are looking for someone who is real, someone they can relate to, not someone who can get in front of an audience and say whatever they want."The Texas primary has been pushed to May 29 because of litigation over redistricting maps drawn by the Republican-dominated state Legislature. Santorum said he expects to win Saturday's primary in Louisiana and added, "The race will not be over when Texas comes around.""You'll have the opportunity here, in the state of Texas, to speak very loudly about what kind of leader you want in this country," he said.Santorum said he speaks with Texas Gov. Rick Perry before scheduled campaign stops in the state. Perry sought the GOP nomination but left the race in January and endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich."This is an important state for us," Santorum said. "I've already spent a lot of time, I've already done a lot of campaign events in Texas. More than anybody else, I suspect."
He's right!
I like the cut of this frothy mix of lube and fecal matter's jib
he does have a point
Hmm... I think I agree?
I totally want Santorum to win the primary.
It's like they don't realize they're fucking each other over by fighting to the death. Republicans should just pick one and stick with it.
I would say that Santorum was a joke candidate from his history, but he kind of was in senate for a decade.
It's a fallacy fallacy. He came to the right conclusion but with the wrong reasoning
Holy shit, what's with this sudden heel-face-turn? I thought he'd say something Klannish or stupid, but NOW he says that Obama should be re-elected? Either he's had a serious change of heart, or he's patient enough to try again in the 2016 elections.
I think Santorum is a fucking idiot.
That said, I do give the man some measure of respect because I do believe he actually means most of the things he says.
Did I mention I think Santorum is a fucking idiot?
I respect him the way I respect Hitler for really sticking to his guns.
Go die in a fire Santorum.
Too much god damn talk about being conservative enough or liberal enough.... HOW ABOUT BE SENSIBLE ENOUGH INSTEAD!!!!! KNMDPINFIQEWJPOKASFNPWDGFPWIOQG

What about vermin supreme
Vermin Supreme needs to be President
Excuse me facepunch, I do believe my head just exploded. Santorum, say something smart? I can't conceive of it.
Even if he is the GOP nominee everyone's going to vote for Obama
[sub][sub]I hope[/sub][/sub]
Sanctorum for president 2012
I don't think he genuinely thinks that Obama is a good president.
He just said that to imply that all the other candidates will be worse presidents than Obama.
My only concern is Santorum gives energy and enthusiasm to the Republicans (oh god that last sentence sounds so wrong).
Remember, the GOP doesn't like Romney, they only take him because he is the best they have.

If Vermin Supreme wins presidency, i will finally have clean teeth.
he does have a point
No he doesn't. The idea that the candidates need to be polar opposites of one another is what CAUSED this problem and is why our two party system is currently crashing and burning.
are you one of those god damned liberals
Are you one of those wingnut conservatives?
We frown upon those kinds of people around here.

Wow. I completely forgot about that guy.
today I got in an argument with a friend why Santorum was insane. I won.
Today i woke up and read this and still think Santorum is a retard.

They have.
Romney's going to be their man, it's been set for a while now. Santorum has media attention and religious nutbombs, Romney has the corporate backing that actually matters.
I love how all the republicans are trying to paint each other as moderates when in fact the only way to win is to be a moderate.

Which is why Romney will win the nomination, unless either Gingrich or Santorum drops out and gives the other their voters.
If Rick was less mean to social attack targets, he may have had my vote.

Okay serious question:
Why? What has he done to even remotely deserve a vote?
