High risk Ebola could reach France and UK by end-Oct, scientists calculate
31 replies, posted
LONDON, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Scientists have used Ebola disease spread patterns and airline traffic data to predict a 75 percent chance the virus could be imported to France by October 24, and a 50 percent chance it could hit Britain by that date.
Those numbers are based on air traffic remaining at full capacity. Assuming an 80 percent reduction in travel to reflect that many airlines are halting flights to affected regions, France's risk is still 25 percent, and Britain's is 15 percent.
"It's really a lottery," said Derek Gatherer of Britain's Lancaster University, an expert in viruses who has been tracking the epidemic - the worst Ebola outbreak in history.
Better get the biohazard suits.
Time to go to Madagascar!
When I bought those ABC suits 5 years ago, my parents thought I was being ridiculous. But I told them they'd be grateful one day!
Well, the jokes on ebola! I don't have any human contact!
:suicide:

same, but i do eat raw sewage
Time to go to Madagascar!
The borders closed last year.
i don't understand how they could possibly estimate these vectors
ebola doesn't travel on its own and it can only be transferred through direct contact with infected persons
Better close the ports

The joke doesn't work anymore since that country is facing a black plague epidemic
Why is everyone not taking this seriously? is it denial? or am I missing something? is it just media trying to spark fear?
If someone can fill me in, that'd be grand.

Modern medicine and sanitation almost completely eliminates the threat of ebola, the reason is spreads like wildfire in african slums is because few people understand how disease spreads, there's almost no medical aid and sewage and drinking water contaminate each other.

Well given that it's just another story in the ongoing shit yourself parade, I tend to not get too worked up about things like this unless people in the UK start dying in their droves of it.
For the above news story, you may as well tell me I have a 15% chance of dying of bus collision tomorrow for all I can do about it.

Despite the raging pandemic in Africa, Ebola's actually near-impossible to spread because it only does so when the patient is literally bursting at the seams with blood. Moreover, Ebola can only be transmitted at the point if you then fed the patient's runoff into a sprinkler and frolicked in the spray. Because modern society is so hygiene-centric, it's hard for something like Ebola to spread in any respectable country. But because eating bushmeat is still common in Africa and hygiene's much less important, ebola pandemics are possible there.
Okay, understood. What about in the countryside? like say west wales? would you say that it has more or less of a chance of spreading? since most care would be taken in the cities

Way less due to the lower population density, ebola only spreads through infected body fluids.

That's not many people to be honest. Even if Ebola-Chan comes to the UK it won't be as infectious, we have better infrastructure overall and medical supplies so it won't last long. Anyway it should really be a low-risk thing if we screened everyone for diseases from african\middle-eastern countries and known-countries that are infected.
This Ebola craze has to stop. They're building it up as if it was the worst thing to happen to human history since forever.

Remember Swine Flu?

I do and it was horrible. Just stick the word PANDEMIC RISK onto something and you get your fair share of attention.
Fuck sake, if it comes here I'm guaranteed fucked, my dad works across the hall from the god damn infectious diseases unit at the hospital he works in.

Probably cause diseases that make you bleed out your orifices is pretty fucking scary, much scarier than being flu'd to death.
Imagine the panic on the bus when I go city centre and someone starts coughing.
It'll take just one crazy ill-informed person to shout "oh my god ebola" and everyone panics.
I'll be honest with all of you: I am more terrified of preppers then I am of Ebola.
The preppers over here in the states are already making preparations for an all out apocalypse and are literally starting fights with people at MilSurp stores who try to buy a gas mask or camouflage pattern they want.

No you're not guaranteed fucked, since hospitals in the west are prepared to stop diseases from spreading and ebola does not have a easy time spreading(since you have to come in contact with bodily fluids). As i said time and time again, Ebola spreads that much(which still isn't a lot) in african countries since their hospitals are more or less nonexistent, people don't know what to do and hygiene is lacking.

That would be funny if it wasn't real.

I can't be the only one who thinks this music would be more relevant, given the bleeding from the orifices and what not.
