Which is one of the reasons they had to be as aggressive as they were. And a lot of their early gains were partially from Poland, Czechoslovakia and to some extent France which gave them a much better buffer.

Then we paid to rebuild them. Now they have the second most robust economy In the world.

But foreign cash really was a huge deal. There's still massive differences between former DDR and BRD territories.
