Looks pretty good. Hopefully this will make people realize that Metro is actually just a better looking full-screen start menu
By the way, it's a free update to W8 users.
honestly i don't understand how those basic personalization settings for the start screen weren't included in windows 8
they're so basic and essential i don't understand why they decided to ship without them
Maybe I'll actually start using Metro

I really like the concept of a full screen start menu but I really needed more personalization options and there were a few weird kinks that needed to be worked out but 8.1 is fixing them from what I've heard.

That kind of personalization is usually one of the first few things that get cut when you're running close to a deadline. When you've only got a little bit of time left, pretty much everything is more important than being able to choose from a lot of colors or adding fancy background effects when scrolling.
Pretty much everything here was probably slated for the Windows 8 launch but had to be put off to meet the deadline.
I like W8, but I remain baffled by the "app" side of the OS. It's like a worse desktop. What's the point?

Metro home screen = better alternative to the fucking mess that was desktop shortcuts and the start menu
Metro apps = programs for things that you ordinarily would not download software to do and would instead either use a web browser or pick up your phone/tablet, e.g. calendar

It's not like it could be organized or anything.
You're not fooling me Microsoft, if you dont get your shit together for Windows 9 I will probably cease being a customer for your operating systems.

Oh no, I was quite aware metro was more or less a full screen start menu; I just prefer my start menu, y'know.
Not being full-screen.
Can someone translate something for me?
App-like experience.
What does that mean?
Can someone translate something for me?

Care you explain more? Is it that it isn't glossy eye candy or is the whole cloud thing?
I can't complain too much about Win8, I dislike how somethings are more difficult to reach, particularly the control panel and internet settings now but it's okay.
Lack of proper multi-monitor support still sucks ass though. Microsoft should give those of us that use monitors of different resolutions some love.
I've been using 8 for a while on my laptop, the only thing I dislike is the charms bar, it's really silly on 'proper' pc and just gets in the way

did you even try windows 8 before jumping on the hate bandwagon?
It's just like using a program only more.
...
More?
It seems that not making the start menu a compulsory full screen would solve a lot. Why don't they fix it? Who knows, I suppose they know their market and who they want and don't want using their software.
Does windows 8 allow you to do more then one thing at once? Because i need to have 3dsmax open photoshop and maybe a webpage for reference. (i cant have them be full screen)
Hmm, looks a little better now, might consider installing it but i'm WAY too lazy to backup all the data I need and whatnot.
does anyone know if sleeping dogs work on windows 8?

Only in Windows RT you couldn't, normal Windows 8 allows you to run desktop applications as normal, I don't see why there is so much comfusion about this.

I think it's because Microsoft really tried to knock out two birds with one stone and create one "innovative" product. I have very few issues with the Desktop/Laptop side of the OS; it's the integrated touch features that sort of annoy me from time to time.
I feel that Metro could have been tailored better for PCs as well; which it looks like in this update we should be seeing some of these issues resolved, but we'll see.
I wonder when they'll implement Windows in Windows 8's metro.

Windows 8 works just the same as Windows 7 on the desktop side of things. Multitasking is supported (even on RT, but there's not a lot to multitask with on the desktop) in just the same way it's supported in Windows 7.

This is my biggest problem with windows 8 too. A full screen start menu just sort of distracts me from whatever im doing.

RT has the desktop environment as well, you just can't use any programs beyond the ones provided by Windows and then the free Office suite included with RT.
Luckily I have Start8 so I haven't seen metro since I installed it.

Multi-monitor is improved compared to Windows 7, but like DPI scaling Microsoft needs to completely revamp it.
If you want to access the control panel and such, either pin it, or just right click in the lower left-hand corner. You have access to most stuff there.

Yes it does.
Metro home screen = better alternative to the fucking mess that was desktop shortcuts and the start menu

When people say that, it reminds me of Snuggie commercials, with the people who can't work a blanket. Metro home screen is opening a fullscreen desktop, with shortcuts that take up more of the screen than needed, opposed to a list of programs, and folders if the programs have something external, along with quick access to my Documents, Control Panel, My Computer, etc. all in at least 1/8th of my screen. How is Metro more convenient?

The calender is literally one click away on the taskbar, why is there a Metro app for that.
