Germany has announced plans to step up its fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria following a direct appeal from France after the deadly Paris attacks. The German government said on Thursday it will deploy Tornado reconnaissance jets, refuelling aircraft and a frigate to the region. The move represents a significant shift for Berlin, which has resisted such direct involvement in the conflict. However, it has no plans to join France, the US and Russia in conducting air strikes in Syria. "Today the government took difficult but important and necessary decisions," Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen told reporters after meeting with politicians. "We are standing with France." Chancellor Angela Merkel had promised the support, which must still be approved by parliament, during talks with French President Francois Hollande in Paris on Wednesday. Berlin expects to commit between four and six Tornado jets, provide satellite support, refuelling planes and a frigate to help protect the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which the French navy has sent to the eastern Mediterranean to support air strikes in both Syria and Iraq. Henning Otte, a member of parliament for Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, who acts as a spokesman for the party on defence matters, told the Reuters news agency that the government aimed to have a draft of the new mandate ready by Tuesday and seek approval from the Bundestag by the end of the year. The move follows attacks in Paris on November 13 that killed 130 people and led Hollande to call for a grand coalition of countries to fight ISIL.
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2015/11/germany-send-jets-france-anti-isil-fight-151126172111795.html

I have mixed feelings about this. With god knows how many potential IS sleeper cells in Germany, we just made ourselfes a target.
I have mixed feelings about this. With god knows how many potential IS sleeper cells in Germany, we just made ourselfes a target.
As if Germany wasn't already
Well that's unique for Germany. I think I share the opinions of DMGaina here, I will be completely unsurprised to hear of an attack in Berlin soon.
Thank you based politicians. Now you dont only waste tax money on supporting and supplying these guys, but also on spying on them!
I'm tired of reading about countries "joining the fight" and then reading on to see... they're just sending more bombs. Considering how the situation has escalated. It's safe to say the bombing isn't doing shit.
For the IS down below, it doesn't matter. Germany is part of the conflict now.
So let other countries do the work of fighting IS and suffering terrorist attacks while you do nothing and just hope they don't hit you? Seems fairly selfish and naive.
So let other countries do the work of fighting IS and suffering terrorist attacks while you do nothing and just hope they don't hit you? Seems fairly selfish and naive.
Well it's like cost and benefit. Cost = increased probability of being targeted. benefit= looking like you're doing your part to allies Though you might argue that the recon is to build a plan to vanquish Isis and/or extremism...

Okay, but also try cutting off the oil smuggling supplying them with the money they rely on and sanction all the nations complicit with that trade until they do something about it. Having Western forces show up and blow shit up is going to bring more anti western sentiment and help IS (or, if we beat them, whatever is inevitably going to come after them if this isn't done properly) get more recruits. A purely pacifist approach here isn't going to work, but there must be more that can be done to cut them off at the source than just bombing.
Still got bad blood after WW2?
What? We are lucky they couldn't successfully bomb something yet, they have already tried it several times
Still got bad blood after WW2?
I am literally german though [editline]27th November 2015[/editline] I just think Germany already is a target. I don't want it that way, jesus :v:
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad this is happening, but I am slightly annoyed that some people are acting like this is the first Germany has done to support the region. They've supplied humanitarian aid, (a lot of it) surplus military equipment to the Peshmerga and YPG both, and they've graciously let their citizens join anti-ISIS groups without threatening prosecution.
Considering this is a song about fighting the english navy, it is a bit unfitting.
Yep. To be honest that was really moronic for him to post that, but whatever. I mean, it's called "Das Engelandlied". You don't even need to be proficient in German to get the jist of that.
Only way is to demolish and conquer, aka clean of isis and start over so that nothing bad spawns from it without people's hand in it.
You think there'll be no serious negative consequences from going in and blowing everything up? You really think that's the best approach?
How do you clean out ISIS with bombs, maybe you can keep them militarily powerless by bombing them but their cause is still there? How many people do you have to kill before you discourage enough people to join them to consider ISIS erased? [editline]27th November 2015[/editline] I don't think you fight extremism with extreme measures such as violence, so while it might keep them in check it's not an ultimate solution right? :v:
Interesting and a very nice development; Though, I do wonder what the ISIS/Jihadists in Germany will think of this, let alone the hundreds of thousands of middle eastern people they've brought into the country, will feel about this.
At some point you have to wonder how much ordinance that can be dropped before there isn't a single building left in syrua
Wouldn't be surprised to hear terrorist bombing at Germany tomorrow.

It's safe to say the bombing isn't doing shit.
1. This is Recon. 2. Do you have a better idea to take care of ISIS beside from saying "bombing ain't doin shit."? I'm tired of reading these kinds of posts about how people are against the bombings, yet never suggest a better solution themselves.
So let other countries do the work of fighting IS and suffering terrorist attacks while you do nothing and just hope they don't hit you? Seems fairly selfish and naive.
No, I am glad that this whole crisis brings so many countries together to act as one force. But on the other hand, why is it necessary to be part of a conflict that Germany absolutely nothing to do with in the first place. Germany is not even actively flying any attacks, they just are there for France's sake. It's either stay out or show more initiative, not this wishy-washy bullshit.
