Alright, so, I love my Volkswagen to death, but I'm too afraid to do much with it. Its my daily driver, and I'd like for it to stay relatively reliable, pristine, and most of all, stock. I need a project vehicle that's relatively easy to work on, fun to throw around, manual transmission, and, most of all, pulls off the ratty look amazingly well. Right now, I'm torn between a late 80's Cherokee, an antique/classic Chevy, or another VW Type 1. Any suggestions would be helpful.
datsun 240z drop a 350 small block in there cheap, fast, bad-ass
I love that styling :3: [editline]11th April 2011[/editline]
a late 80's Cherokee
Do this this this this
Old corolla or datsun. Nobody ever goes that route even though pretty much anything they made pre-1980 was the shit. Old corolla + 1UZ swap? Old B210 or 510 + SR20... RB20... CA18 even? Or like lemon said, 240z + SBC? All good choices. Cherokee idea sucks, 4WD is for rednecks who want to go MUDDIN'. Boring.
bradley, all the cars you posted look best old school clean, 240z on the other hand looks beast with rat rod styling. a 510 with a sr20 is cool though i mean just look at this thing http://zilvia.net/f/cars-sale/174256-fs-datsun-510-sr20det-gt30r-bride-volk-defi-showquality.html [editline]11th April 2011[/editline] or he could go rb25 in the 240z, but it loses the rat feeling of simplicity
Yeah, I agree. I mean, what I'm saying is, old imports look good clean with nicely done swaps in them. But I totally agree on the 240z, rat rod or nothing. Clean 240z's do not appeal to me. Too..... boring. Also..... wow. That 510 is like a dream. Mad tyte JDM yo! Haha, but seriously. Shit. That looks like it took years to get together. And costs WAY too much.
I'd go with the classic chevy, whatever model it is. A manual v8 engine is a blast to drive, no inline 4/6 bangers. As for mods to it your stuck with engine and possibly interior, that's my personal prefference though. You could build a ratrod though, total customization, cheap (1000-3000 for a moderate quality one), and unlike any other car to drive. [editline]11th April 2011[/editline] Badass
I'd like nothing more than to build a ratrod, it'd just be my first HUGE project. I'd need the help of the mighty Automotive Addicts and their infinite wisdom.
I approve of the 240z SBC project. As I'm currently looking for an automatic 240z to start that project myself. (Auto because its cheaper... and the trans is coming out anyway.)
The Chevy I wouldn't care about, but please don't mess with old VWs, they were perfect in stock fittings. Cherokee is probably your best bet especially if you live in the US. Parts are available everywhere and modification is prevalent and often encouraged.
a ratty jeep is just going to look like a piece of shit
a ratty jeep is just going to look like a piece of shit
Ratty Wrangler.
"Wratty wreep" - scooby doo

If I'm going to break things on a VW, its going to be one of those Super Beetle abominations. [editline]11th April 2011[/editline] Better yet. It's european rat, i'm looking for better examples, it's different than those hot rod rats, but it's cool look at all its awesomeness
I'm loving the bus in the background... something like that will definitely be one of my future projects :v:

ratrods are absolutely disgusting

well if they were sticking straight up out the middle of the hood they were probably on carbs
When I'm older, I'm going to buy a Prius, tear all of that electric engine shit out of it and slap the biggest engine into it that I can. I'd change things around a bit to make it rear or all wheel drive and stuff. Then I'd race ricers with it, just because I can.
well if they were sticking straight up out the middle of the hood they were probably on carbs
Yeah, that's probably what they were. There were two of them spaced maybe 3-6 inches apart sticking through the hood.

I was watching some garage show on Speed and they were putting an LS7 in an old M3. Like this one: Except it was Primered.
simpsons already di.., shit, too much south park. it's been done. there's a prius somewhere in the US with a LS7 in it
I don't really car that it's been done. Someone has stuck a Hayabusa engine in a Smart, that'd be sweet too.
