I'm glad I got this for free through PS Plus instead of buying it outright. It's the perfect example of just because you can make a game with retro graphics, doesn't mean you should. [editline]26th April 2014[/editline] The only proper decent game to come out through PS Plus was Outlast. Resogun is pretty but lacks variety, Contrast was a shadow of what could have been. Dead Nation is kinda alright but nothing special.
Don't Starve tho
Yeah, I forgot that. Maybe I would have remembered it if they put a proper tutorial in the game, so that I would have actually played it more than twice. It pretty much is a retro throwback, and in more ways than the graphics.
There is nothing wrong with the pixel art in Mercenary Kings. The only problem with the current "retro pixel art" trend in indie games is that developers like to use it to put lazy, tiny sprites blown up to take up a larger part of the screen in their games with the excuse that the game is a "nostalgic retro throwback". Mercenary Kings has actual effort put into the sprites and has some pretty damn good animation done by Paul Robertson, whose a pretty fucking popular sprite artist.
