WELLINGTON - NEW ZEALAND looks set to lose filming of The Hobbit after a union dispute convinced Hollywood studios the country was an unstable production environment, director Peter Jackson said on Thursday. Jackson said Warner Bros executives were travelling to New Zealand next week to make arrangements to shift the troubled production offshore. 'It appears we now cannot make films in our own country - even when substantial financing is available,' the Oscar-winning director said in a statement. The Hobbit, a two-part prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has been dogged by a dispute between Jackson and the actors' union NZ Equity, which last month persuaded its international counterparts to boycott the production. Jackson said that the unions recently lifted the ban, but that this would do nothing to keep the films in New Zealand because the damage to the country's film industry had already been done. 'NZ Equity's unjustified industrial action against The Hobbit has undermined Warner Bros' confidence in New Zealand as a stable employment environment, and they are now, quite rightly, very concerned about the security of their US$500 million (S$650 million) investment,' he said. New Zealand provided a stunning location for The Lord of the Rings, which helped establish a thriving screen industry, boosted New Zealand's tourism profile and catapulted Jackson to the A-list of Hollywood directors. He predicted the likely loss of The Hobbit would have a major impact on the NZ$3 billion (S$2.93 billion) a year industry. 'This will be the start of a domino effect, as word of New Zealand's unstable employment environment registers with film investors and studios worldwide,' the director said.
our teachers are having disputes now so are our actors fuck

Why did they ban filming there in the first place?
Probably to do with the natives. It's ALWAYS to do with the natives.
Why did they ban filming there in the first place?
Actors' union, so probably a pay dispute.
I heard they are changing to Europe....
I heard they are changing to Europe....
Well the thing is, Middle Earth was based around European countryside, just our lands are filled with motorways now.
Well the thing is, Middle Earth was based around European countryside, just our lands are filled with motorways now.
Oh silly Europeans, building engines into your roads, how fast do they go?
They should film in Norway.
They should film in Norway.
Indeed, Scandinavia. Norway's got the mountains, Sweden's got the country side and open fields, Finland's got the cold forests and Denmark's got the ocean I guess. Edit: :smith:
Denmark's got the ocean I guess.
lol Anyway, I'd say Britain for the countryside.
Probably to do with the natives. It's ALWAYS to do with the natives.
The Maoris? Most of the time, they've only got a problem with people trying to build on "their" land. It's "where their ancestors are buried."
Our media studies teacher's been going about this, saying it's probably going to screw us over with the already failing film industry we have. Then he tries to get us to become filmmakers :v:
this is fucking stupid :frown:
The whole thing could be done up in the scottish highlands, it's got the countryside, it's got the mountains, it has an abundance of lochs, it's got the cold dark winter forests and as an added bonus it has the heroin addicts that can play golem :v:
Oh man this sucks. Well at least there are plenty of other countrysides which will suit it, though I'm afraid that the feel won't be the same as LOTR :(
Hobbits in Space?
really disappointed, new zealand is what helped define lord of the rings films and it should be the same for the hobbit
Quite a few places in the peak district that look similar to film in the UK, like said above tho...... too many roads in other places.
Well the Hobbit is set almost entirely in a different bit of Middle-Earth anyway...
Well england anyone?
Well the Hobbit is set almost entirely in a different bit of Middle-Earth anyway...
Hardly.
http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2010/10/21/39428-video-of-gollums-cave-interview/ video interview with peter jackson and a few others about this problem, new zealand haven't lost this yet as warner brothers representatives are going to new zealand next monday to discuss whether they will pull the movie from new zealand.
The Maoris? Most of the time, they've only got a problem with people trying to build on "their" land. It's "where their ancestors are buried."
My ancestors are buried on this here gold mine/oil field/Diamond mine/ Unobtainium.
this whole situation is ridiculous; the people leading this boycott stated that this could simply be resolved in an eating early on. peter jackson turned up to one of these meetings and guess what? they denied him entrance to it. they don't even know what they're asking for and it's only damaging the new zealand film industry. [editline]21st October 2010[/editline] http://www.3news.co.nz/The-Hobbit-Jackson-and-the-actors-speak-out/tabid/367/articleID/182467/Default.aspx look at this, at the end they said 'we should have had a meeting.' peter jackson TURNED UP to one and offered to talk to them but they refused to let him in and negotiate!
Indeed, Scandinavia. Norway's got the mountains, Sweden's got the country side and open fields, Finland's got the cold forests and Denmark's got the ocean I guess. Edit: :smith:
I'll wait for someone to hop in and say that Finland isn't a part of Scandinavia.
If they do end up filming outside NZ, it's probably going to be East-Europe, as filming in West-EU would be very expensive.
The issues that the actors have been having conflicts is that they have no minimum guarantees of wages in their contracts, or assurances over the working conditions on the set. There are no cancellation payments in the event shooting is dumped or actors cut, and they don't have any payment for future broadcasts or releases of the Hobbit when it gets into DVD. Remember there are much more actors and others involved in the movie beyond the leads who are virtually the only ones guaranteed to get something out of the movie. I find it funny that Jackson is falling back on saying that Equity is being bullied by the Aussie MEAA, even though the two had agreed to joint action some years ago. Take the case of James Bryson, one of the model directors in the original LoTR project, who got unjustly fired and successfully argued the case in court, but was subsequently blacklisted from NZ film projects. It's the case with a lot of these people who are frankly not pleased that NZ's filming industry has essentially set it self up to be the place for film projects to go to if they don't want to pay the production fees and fair wages to crews in other major countries, like the US, Australia, UK, Canada, etc.
