A CUP of tea three times a day can significantly reduce the risk of dying from heart disease, a major study has found.
The favourite hot drinks enjoyed by millions of Britons every day are packed with health-boosting properties, scientists have said. They found that coffee and tea had significant protective effects on the heart. People who sip between three and six cups of tea each day are 45 per cent less likely to die from coronary problems compared with those who drink fewer than one a day.
And two to four cups of coffee a day may lower your risk of heart problems by 20 per cent, the Dutch study found. The humble cuppa contains flavonoids, which offer significant cardiovascular benefits – potentially saving many thousands of lives each year. Responding to the findings Ellen Mason, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “This adds further weight to the evidence that drinking tea and coffee in moderation is not harmful for most people, and may even lower your risk of developing, or dying, from heart disease. “However, leading a healthy overall lifestyle is the thing that really matters when it comes to keeping your heart in top condition.” The UK has one of the highest rates of heart disease in Europe, with 200,000 dying every year. Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in the UK. It is responsible for 38 per cent of all fatalities. The researchers at the University Medical Centre Utrecht studied tea and coffee consumption among 37,514 people and monitored their health for 13 years. They found that those who drank about two large mugs of tea a day had their risk of suffering coronary problems slashed in half.
More than six cups a day was associated with a 36 per cent lower risk of heart disease.
The study was also good news for coffee drinkers – “modest intake” of two to four cups a day may lead to a 20 per cent lower risk of heart problems and overall reduction in death from heart disease. Researchers also found that the benefits of drinking tea and coffee occur without increasing the risk of stroke. The benefits are said to be down to antioxidants and flavonoids in tea, although the precise mechanisms are not understood. Flavonoids are a group of plant nutrients found in wine, tea, and some fruits and vegetables. They can help beat cancer and ageing by protecting cells from damage. Study author Dr Yvonne van der Schouw said: “I would not go so far as to recommend people who don’t drink tea and coffee to start doing so now. But certainly those who do drink moderate amounts of the beverage are not doing themselves any harm. “The benefits occur without increasing risk of stroke.” The team, whose research is published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology: Journal of the American Heart Association, also noted that tea and coffee drinkers have different health behaviours – with more coffee drinkers prone to smoke and have a less healthy diet.

Well chaps, we're pretty healthy then.

US south that is

Upside is it doesn't taste like piss
I should probably start changing my coffee for tea, then.

No need, coffee also helps.
With all the different teas out there there's got to be one everyone likes without huge amounts of sugar added who wouldn't want the health benefits
I don't like tea :smith:
I have two mugs a day instead, I can't fit three cups into a day.
Earl Grey tea may well be the greatest thing of all time. This news only makes me want it more.
Haha I laugh at your sugary British tea.
Real men do not put sugar in tea.

Well that's good, since I prefer coffee over tea. (although i'm better at making tea than coffee, since Mum sometimes gets me to make her cuppas)
If this is true, then Great Britain has a huge advantage.
There is no real way of saying it's the tea. I mean you must have a pretty laid back job / lifestyle if you are having 3 cups of tea a day anyway.
There's no way of saying it's the teas chemical effect on the body from this study rather than the lack of stress the subject most likely has due to the time they have to drink tea (time not being busy / working).
I'm not saying it's not the tea, I'm just saying there's no real way of saying it has anything to do with the teas chemical content.

There are so many different types and brands that are all significantly different, if anything you haven't tried enough to find kinds that you like.

Woah you're HArdC0RE
No one cares. If you bothered to read the artical you'd get some idea that this is suggesting tea without milk and sugar.
I only drink tea with sugar, fuck your pure taste shit, with sugar it's like the beverage of the British gods.

cheerio
Sweet, then my chances of heart diseases is cut 100%!
Sugary tea is horribly, it's just not meant to be. Normal tea is refreshing, relaxing and you just feel better.

There have been many studies which show similar results. 3 Cups of tea a day isn't much at all. Most jobs have kettles and kitchens where you can make drinks.
Did anyone else read the title as "Three cups of tea a day can HAVE the risk of heart disease?"
Three cups a day? I don't have that much money I mean geez.
Also sugary tea > any other tea. Deal with it :colbert:
