The federal and state governments have reached an in-principle agreement to provide an R18+ rating for video games.
The proposal has been debated at a meeting of attorneys-general in Adelaide.
Gamers have argued the rating would protect children from games containing inappropriate material, while giving adult gamers a choice.
The New South Wales Attorney-General abstained from the proposal.
South Australia has previously indicated it will also scrap the current MA15+ , meaning all violent games will be restricted to adults.
Federal Justice Minister Brendan O'Connor welcomed the in-principle agreement saying it is a "big step forward in the long running debate on classification".
"The introduction of an R18+ classification for computer games will provide better advice to parents and help prevent children and teenagers from accessing unsuitable material," he said.
"Once introduced, the new classification will also afford adults the opportunity to view material designed for adults."
"It is a credit to all jurisdictions that the meeting has now been able to achieve agreement over what is a complex matter in classification policy."
A national telephone survey conducted by Galaxy last year showed that 80 per cent of the 2,226 people contacted said they supported the introduction of an adult only category for games.
Draft guidelines presented at the last attorneys-general meeting have since been amended and this requires some states to seek approval from their respective cabinets.
Once that is achieved, the Federal Government can begin drafting the legislation to introduce the new classification.
Under the proposed guidelines games containing high-level violence will be restricted to adults, while games containing extreme violence will continue to be refused classification and banned from sale altogether.
Finally
They still need to remove that stupid ban.
What the hell?
I thought the current legislation gave the A-G's the power to change the classification criteria without having to change the legislation.
If they need to change the legislation, what the hell has the Government been doing the whole time?
I am confusion.
I may be American, but I genuinely care about this issue. I feel that it's utter horseshit to censor this from people.
I have signed every petition and I don't even live there. Well, I want to move there but not with these bans in place.
Government has just been beating their meet the whole time.

We might've won the battle on finally getting this stupid ratings classification fixed (or at least the choice to finally fix it), but in the past 2 weeks, the country's four largest ISPs have decided they would filter certain pages off the internet at their own discretion.
It didn't even come from a push from the Government.
Party at my place.
No doubt Tony Abbott will:

Um that is where you are wrong:
"On 11 August 2010, at a public forum Tony Abbott was asked a question about his views on the absence of an R18+ rating for video games and whether he has any policies relating to the subject. His reply was if the Coalition won the upcoming election he would be happy to examine the issue of an R18+ classification rating for video games
I am in no way defending Liberal party, I hate them/
Also fucking party time.

Only 2 ISP's have volunteered for that and that is Optus/Telstra

Yeah... the two main ones. And Telstra own all the cabling (right?).
wow i honestly thought this would never happen
pretty cool, maybe i'll finally get to play mortal kombat
Um that is where you are wrong:
Glad to be wrong about it.

There are another two, but I've forgotten their names. Optus and Telstra do make the bulk of the internet in Australia, and most Australians will be affected by the filtering by them.

This is why even though I vacationed in Australia and loved it, I would not want to live there for a long period of time.

It's such a minor issue. We're an economically, socially strong and stable nation.
I've been all around the world, and there is nowhere I'd rather call home than Australia.

This took alot longer than it needed to..
I would just like to play L4D2 uncensored
that's all i want

This makes it sound like we still won't get games like mortal kombat.
Good to see this happen
so does this mean the ratings will be G, PG, M, R18?
I personally think MA15 should stay, and R18 should simply be added as a further rating.

Yeah but I'm not too sure.
Guess we'll just find out I guess.
In other news: Australian piracy rates drop unexplainably.
In other news: Australian piracy rates drop unexplainably.
I don't think too many people here pirate games simply because they want an uncensored version, only very few games actually end up with censoring and even with games such as L4D2 their are workarounds to uncensor the game.
Apparently we will be seeing the rating at the end of this month.

Dear Garry:
Add a R18 rating.
Signed, Australian Users.

You are wrong. If garry did as much as add a 16 rating half would go.
