• Tesla will soon introduce new Autopilot safety restrictions after recent accidents
We have yet to see that blog post, but now Electrek has learned that Tesla will introduce new Autopilot safety restrictions in order to reduce the risk of similar accidents happening again. Tesla owners are often wary of new Autopilot restrictions. They feel like Tesla is rolling back features that they have paid for, but they shouldn’t worry about the new restrictions since they will not really affect owners using the system properly. ... Now we learn that Tesla is about to introduce a new restriction with the upcoming v8.0 software update to give more weight to the alerts. According to sources familiar with the Autopilot program, Tesla will add a safety restriction that will result in not only the Autopilot disengaging after alerts are repeatedly ignored, but also blocking the driver from re-engaging the feature after it was automatically disengaged.
Source People abusing the system making it more annoying for the rest of us :goodjob: At least it isn't too restrictive I guess.
Always got to accomdate for the retards in society that abuse stuff, but doesn't sound like it's going to be much of an annoyance.
Annoying sure, but I definitely feel better knowing idiots aren't allowed to improperly operate their self-driving car at least not as badly as before

It's just a driver assist. Though the 8.0 software is supposed to improve it by several orders of magnitude apparently.

I mean you still have to be aware but the car will take care of you for the most part. It does not mean you activate this mode and go for a fucking nap.
Fine by me imo. I've never been past the first warning chime so this won't affect me nor anyone using it as intended.
Don't auto pilot and take a nap. Still be cautious of your environment and be ready to take control if needed.
There's one thing about autopilot I've always been wondering about - you're supposed to keep your hands on the wheel, yet any input from the driver will instantly turn it off. Wouldn't holding the wheel when the car is trying to turn make it think you're trying to take control back?
You can block firmware updates on these things right?

You have to give it a fairly decent pull to override it.
I think "autopilot and take a nap" is more like what Google is doing. Tesla never aimed for full autonomy.
You can block firmware updates on these things right?
I should most certainly hope not Usually I'm all for having complete control over something you've bought, but in this case doing so could result in the death of others
You can choose not to install updates but if you take the car in for service they are going to update it anyway. 8.0 will apparently improve Autopilot significantly though and contain other major improvements so I doubt many will not upgrade. If Tesla care that much about getting people to upgrade they can just SSH into your car over their VPN connection and force it.
I should most certainly hope not Usually I'm all for having complete control over something you've bought, but in this case doing so could result in the death of others
I absolutely hate personal autopilot vehicles... It's disgusting.
I absolutely hate personal autopilot vehicles... It's disgusting.
Why?
I absolutely hate personal autopilot vehicles... It's disgusting.
Its a brand new technology, of course it has a few minor issues. What is important is that tesla is recognizing them and attempting to correct them. And remember, for autopilot to be effective, it doesn't need to be perfect, just better than human beings, and we already reached that milestone
I absolutely hate personal autopilot vehicles... It's disgusting.
I'm confused as to how a precursor to fully autonomous vehicle software is disgusting. I don't see how someone could find it offensive from any angle.
I'm confused as to how a precursor to fully autonomous vehicle software is disgusting. I don't see how someone could find it offensive from any angle.
No, to a lot of these people that's even worse. Some people are so wedded to the idea of a car as a personal expression of freedom that the very idea of a car that drives for you is not only deeply offensive, it's a threat against their way of life.
I absolutely hate personal autopilot vehicles... It's disgusting.
I like driving as much as the next guy, but yesterday I was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for over an hour, and having a car that can help with that would be great. Traffic isn't the fun part of driving to me. Infact, I saw a lady in a black model S probably in autopilot while stuck in said traffic. It would be great.
I just want autopilot in my car so I can go all Will Smith iRobot on some junkies that try to cling onto my car as I fight them off. Everyday I go to work and I swear atleast 4 try to hump my car for 50 cents.
I just want autopilot in my car so I can go all Will Smith iRobot on some junkies that try to cling onto my car as I fight them off.
I recall that he turned autopilot off in that scene.
I should most certainly hope not Usually I'm all for having complete control over something you've bought, but in this case doing so could result in the death of others
That makes sense in this circumstance where people are doing stupid things, but I'd be worried that the updates mean the car is controlled by Tesla despite the fact you paid for it, eg Tesla could release an error in an update that stops the stereo from playing flac files. Another issues is that the car could be updating (refuse to start) and make you late for work. So I'd say an educated user should have the option to disable it if need be.
