Granddad, the Shedd Aquarium Australian lungfish that was the oldest zoo animal in Chicago and the longest lived aquarium fish in the world, died Sunday, the aquarium announced Monday.
The representative of a prehistoric species had been at Shedd since three years after it opened in 1930 and was believed to be in its teens when it arrived, making the animal likely to have been in its 90s or possibly beyond the century mark.
He began losing interest in his food in the past couple of weeks, aquarium collections manager Michelle Sattler said, and on Saturday took a turn for the worse, exhibiting signs of a “shutting down” of vital systems. Shedd health specialists made the decision to euthanize him for humane reasons.
He looked so happy in that picture, doesn't he? If that was a smile, at least. He lived a full life.

Aw man. Whenever I was at the Shedd people would point out Granddad all the time.

What an astute observation. You are indeed correct.

That's actually pretty cool dude! I feel confident in saying Granddad would have been happy for you; fish-god rest his soul.
Holy crap that's old, I never read about this fish. Rest in peace old [del]man[/del] fish.

Thought it was a house brick myself.
I'm sick of all these celebrity deaths :frown:
He lived a full life.
Did he? A long one, perhaps. But a full one? I doubt it, he was in that aquarium for the vast majority of his life, swimming in the same cage over and over.
Of course though, it's a fish. It probably didn't know, let alone care.

Fish are pretty intelligent, complex creatures actually.

As an aquarium hobbyist I agree. Lots of incorrect myths just keep being perpetuated and it's not a good thing. Same for other pets too. RIP in peace fishy. I wonder if he really was the oldest captive fish though, I've heard koi can live to be over 100.
The shedd is supposed to be like a world class aquarium with a lot of freshwater stuff compared to the usual guys (freshwater's my thing). If I ever go to chicago to visit relatives I'm dragging them all there haha.

Gonna warn you, a lot of the stuff (like the dolphin show in the oceanarium) is more oriented for small children.
Plenty of neat stuff there all the same. Wild Reef is always impressive, no matter how many times you visit.

It definitely knew, and perhaps even cared. Fish are much smarter than most people give them credit for.
I've taught a fish to go through a hoop on command and it actually enjoyed being pet too.

They are also delicious steamed, fried, stir fried, deep fried, as sushi, as a salad and as a snack.
