• No one lives forever... or do they? (About aging and dying)
    73 replies, posted
This debate is about the possibility of solving one of life's oldest problems... aging. It is of course a natural process that occurs in pretty much any living being, the young and strong always grow old and weak, then die. Science has never really come up with a solid explanation for aging, yet many have theories (You can also discuss this). These theories range from aging/dying preventing boredom of living; to aging/dying being so that the species can evolve and so that the population doesn't over enlarge and wipe out the species. Though some of us agree with this process and say that it is fine to die, a lot of people think that one lifetime isn't enough, including me. There is so much to learn in the world, more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done (Notice the reference to the lion king, no idea why? [Don't discuss that]). But you see my point? Discuss about aging and dying, whether its right or wrong, discuss about theories for aging, talk about ways people could stop aging, and why you'd want to, or not want to! Very open topic, you can pretty much post anything slightly relevant here.... but hopefully this'll be interesting!
We are far beyond the natural world now, we should be able to chose to eliminate ageing if we so please.
We are far beyond the natural world now, we should be able to chose to eliminate ageing if we so please.
I think it could be a good and bad thing, you know with over population and all that.
We are far beyond the natural world now, we should be able to chose to eliminate ageing if we so please.
I agree with this, i'd love to live as long as i please, i probably wouldn't even want to accept death, just because life is a big T.V. show sometimes. its entertaining to see what happens.
I think it could be a good and bad thing, you know with over population and all that.
People shouldn't be forced to die for the so called "greater good"
Yeah, I mean, with immortality a 1000 year trip to another planet isn't THAT bad, so overpopulation could easily be solved
I accept death and move on. When my family members pass I would be sad but I know it's inevitable to live forever, so I let go. Without death, life could not continue. Plus, would you really want to be 1000 years old? Relying on hundreds of pills, practically no movement other than in a powered chair?
What about Transhumanism? A perfectly healthy mind in a perfectly (although artifical) body? Hell yeah I'd wanna be immortal
I'm terrified of death, and also wouldn't removing age also remove the effects of age?
Alright, assuming you don't age if you are immortal, I would want to be immortal just to see the advances in technology and to teach future generations of our lifestyle. But on the topic of death, who here is afraid of death and why? Personally, I'm not afraid but I'm still young and I haven't really experienced death in my family.

I'm not scared of what's unknown, I'm scared of not existing.
I'm not so much afraid of it as much as I just want to defy it, think of it as fighting back against nature.
See, that's why I would want to stop time. To beat the inevitable. I can understand that. (I see you Derek_SM. Join us.)
I don't think I'd want to live forever, to be honest. The world is a horrible place.
I'd rather be alive than dead, thank you very much
I don't think I'd want to live forever, to be honest. The world is a horrible place.
Sometimes, I can't blame you. But isn't it interesting to see what the future may hold? (Christ, I'm practically every other post. Sorry guys, this just really interests me. I'll hold back and let some other conversations start.)
But, Why?
I don't know, just thinking about not being able to see, think, hear or remember anything just scares me. I guess it's an irrational fear but still.
Im not really afraid to die but I wouldnt mind living another few hundred years. Although I am totally against the idea of immortality.
videologers of youtube think live forever
Im not really afraid to die but I wouldnt mind living another few hundred years. Although I am totally against the idea of immortality.
Why, if you don't mind me asking?
I think almost everyone would like to be immortal, but I think its something best left untouched. Simply because, even with unnatural death all around us, we are STILL overpopulated. If people stopped dying from old age, it would make the problem many times worse.
like my nigga jesse always said, "jesus christ i'm not scared to die, but i'm a little bit scared of what comes after"
like my nigga jesse always said, "jesus christ i'm not scared to die, but i'm a little bit scared of what comes after"
That really is the root of it, isn't it. ( :v: Maybe not phrased like that but...) I'm willing to bet more people are scared of an Afterlife than they are of actual death.
Im not really afraid to die but I wouldnt mind living another few hundred years. To me immortality is an okay side-effect of, say, mind uploading. I'll leave life extension to the researchers that are working on it right here and now, and I'll focus on something else, because what transhumanism needs is an emphasis on the actual transhumanism, not just life extension. I want to be a posthuman, simple as that. If I were to burn out within ten, or five years, because of it? Would it really be that bad? In those five years I could see, I could be so much more, know so much more than someone who just cares about immortalizing an unchanging self.
we should be able to chose to eliminate ageing if we so please.
What do you mean 'should'?.. We probably will be able to in the future but we're not given any right to be able to.. we have to figure it out. This is related to that movie coming out In Time.
Is it just me or this same question has been made multiple times already in different ways in this subforum and it "ended" going the same way this thread is going?

I want to live forever, not have a copy of me live forever.
