What do you think about piracy?
I Personally will not post my thoughts on the subject.
Since i would not like to be banned or flamed. Or both.
EDIT:
It's a poll. [sp](Metaphorically) retards[/sp]
"The penalty is up to $100,000 per title infringed. If charged with a criminal violation, the fine is up to $250,000 per title infringed and up to five years imprisonment."
"A study made by the U.S. Department of Justice of prison releases in 1992, involving about 80 percent of the prison population, found that the average sentence for convicted rapists was 11.8 years"
Why make a thread if you're not gonna tell us your own opinion?
And why should we if you don't? :raise:
Edit:
Yeah, now call us retards, smart move OP.
I think...
it's stupid, don't talk about it here
It's only good when you're downloading Linux Distros.
I say it's both good and bad.
I mean, people download a LOT of music. I know a bunch of my friends getting hundreds of songs and I know that they do not spend an excess of 300+ USD to get 250 songs.
Piracy when it comes to games, I usually look down upon, along with movies, but since enforcement is non-existent online, bootleg is pretty easy to come by.
Good for hard to get stuff, not so much for mainstream. I always feel bad if i download a popular game, less so if I download some out of print album from a guy 100 people have heard of 30 years ago
To be sincere, I don't give a damn. :clint: I admit purchasing some games has quite better benefits than going the other way.

Not seriously though
I buy all my games, music and movies.
This poll lacks an option "I only pirate games that don't deserve my money"
Sure this line of thought is flowed, since a certain hypocrite person won't "find" any worthy game. Still, DRM seems to bring more piracy than sales.
On a side note, DrumStick, your avatar is made of pure win.
I think for music it's fine because everyone does it.
I'm on the fence for films (Movies, DVD releases), the people who make the movies already make millions or even billions, so they shouldn't try to milk out the last drops of money from the film.
But for games it's unacceptable because the developers spend time making the final product and the revenue they receive is all they get.
I think from a business point it is beneficial. Movie rentals just need to evolve to encourage their use and use the internet, and music needs to think outside the box a little bit. I think if anything it helps gaming. Many people use piracy as a type of demo to see if they like a game and then buy it based on that. The real problem lies with singleplayer games that people have a tendency to pirate and never buy.
It's a problem, but a helpful evil you could say.
It markets games to people who might otherwise never play them, prime example is STALKER. This turns underdogs into big hits in the gaming community now.
It lets people see things like shows i.e. The Pacific, that otherwise would be next to impossible or really inconvenient to see and popularizes directors and actors.
Music isn't hurting as bad as they say, and are still shelling out millions and millions like it's candy. I would say it expands people's music collection popularizing musicians they otherwise might not hear. This probably wouldn't be as big a problem if someone hadn't turned a certain Music TeleVision station into nothing but a rolling ad-filled joke.

OP, you do realize that the words "Up" and "To" are there for a reason, right.
That is the maximum legal punishment that can be dealt, NOT the standard punishment. We set maximum punishments for crimes so somebody cannot be charged with a completely disproportionate punishment to the crime committed. i.e. you cannot serve life in prison for any one count of this crime.

Dude.
Ok i will tell you.
I think piracy is not that big a deal, if you are not going to buy a game for what it is worth
then a are technically not "stealing" money off them.
You are just not giving them money.
I'm more excepting of music/films, and some software (photoshop 3ds max (stuff that costs loads of money)) but games (especially PC), I think it is a problem, but the developers should find solutions (but not fucked up ubishit/ea DRM).

That's like saying if you squat in someone's house while they're on vacation you aren't trespassing, you're just occupying their house while they're not around. Without their consent and potentially bringing harm to their property, reputation or financial situation.
I can't afford a yacht. That doesn't mean I go ride around in somebody else's yacht when they aren't using it.
I'm a pirate myself, so i don't give a shit about it.

No actually in Australia THAT is the MINIMUM punishment.
But third-world countries don't really count.

No it isn't
I think Piracy is...........................................................
and that is why............................................................
and then it...............................................
thank you.

Butter chicken !!!!!!! pirate that from your computers :smug:

No it's not. What you quoted said "up to." You clearly didn't quote anything australian.
I don't really care about piracy, but I can't stand the self-righteous way pirates try to play themselves off as the victims.
No it isn't
Yes it is. Utilizing a consumer product without paying is stealing. That is the definition of stealing. "Not giving them money" is a stupid fucking way to put it.
"Not giving them money" is fine if you aren't taking something from them, but you are. You are taking a consumer product and justifying it with the rationalization that they don't need your money or you shouldn't have to pay because you're only going to use it a little bit. That is fucking retarded. If you can't afford to buy something you don't fucking get that something, at all.
I think the big argument is that with the way the economy is if you have $50 you can spend on games in your budget, and you're going to buy one.
Lets say you buy Bad Company 2. Now you're broke. Metro 2033, Assassin's Creed 2, Dragon Age: Awakening, Chaos Rising, Just Cause 2, New Dawn of Discovery expansion, Napoleon: TW, etc all coming out in this short period.
Even if you did get a bit more money you could NEVER buy all these games. Well with piracy you can at least get to experience them, and the people that thought Metro or Just Cause were more worth the money are still supporting the company financially.
Lets say after you do this, you find you enjoyed Metro 2033 a lot more than BC2. Well if 4A Games makes a new STALKER game or Metro 2034 or 44, or whatever the second book is, you will probably spend your $50 on that next time.
What this means is that piracy lets companies pick up consumers that they would otherwise never get. 4A Games would still be nothing without piracy for example and now because of STALKER getting around and now Metro 2033, they are big contenders.
Best way to look at it is from a marketing standpoint. It's more trouble than its worth to try to stop it, and it's going to happen no matter what so we might as well look at the good side rather than flipping shit over the bad.
You are hindering their profits and invalidating their investments by using their products at their expense without their consent. That is a very valid form of theft.

That is incredibly selfish.
I say again: I can't afford a yacht. That doesn't mean I go and use somebody else's yacht just to "experience" it. If you can't pay you don't play. Deal with it. Spend all that time you waste on playing pirated games working toward a better fucking job. Then you can actually afford shit instead of being lazy, selfish and conceited with this stupid fucking entitlement complex that dictates that you have the right to "experience" shit.
Yarrrrr
The video game industry is not a goddamn charity. Buying a game is not making a goddamn donation to the developer because you think they are worthy of your almighty dollar.

That's a horrible analogy. A better example would be art. I don't fully condone it either, but I look at it more as a sense of people enjoying a type of art; like a movie, music, or a game, that otherwise they wouldn't have experienced. It's selfish, yes, but that is human nature, get used to it, but aside from that I believe is it more beneficial than many like to think.
Yes kill them those stupid fuckerrrrrrs.

I don't have to get used to it. Because it's illegal and a felony.
Just like I don't have to get used to my ex-girlfriend who watched me pee through a window. Fuck no, I got a restraining order is what I did. "Get used to it," get used to deez nuts.
