Project Harpoon: Plus size model Tess Holliday demands users boycott Facebook and Instagram accounts fat-shaming women Source: Independent.co.uk ____________________
Tess Holliday has been targeted by Project Harpoon - - - Tess Holliday has slammed an “abominable” Facebook page for Photoshopping her image and images of other women to make them appear slimmer. Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr accounts under the name ‘Project Harpoon’ are sharing images of plus size men, women, models and actresses manipulated without their permission to make them look slimmer, often with the hashtags #thinnerbeauty and #SkinnyAcceptance. Melissa McCarthy, Holliday, Rebel Wilson and Ashley Graham are just a few of the women who have been targeted by the account. It is not clear who is behind the campaign, although there is evidence it may have emerged on 4Chan, which has a history of users trolling and shaming women. Holliday, 29, rose to fame with her #effyourbeautystandards campaign, which promotes body positivity, making her inclusion even more absurd. "It's abominable that this [Facebook page] is using my image without permission to promote themselves," Holliday told E! News.
Love this quote, "4Chan, which has a history of users trolling and shaming women." This 4chan guy sure likes to troll and shame women, hey! :v:
-snip-
"#effyourbeautystandards" It's not beauty standards, it's called being healthy, you fucking whale.
Targetted, they really went for the most hostile verb they could find.
"#effyourbeautystandards" It's not beauty standards, it's called being healthy, you fucking whale.
It'd be fantastic if someone in her position, who achieved notoriety for being obese, changed her ways and made an example of herself, for others to follow.
I'm sure the photoshoppers are devastated by this response
I am willing to call her a hypocrite. Unless of course she want's to claim that none of her modelling photos go through a Photoshopping pipeline.
i don't get what's so funny or smart about going out of your way to make sure fat people feel ashamed of themselves
i don't get what's so funny or smart about going out of your way to make sure fat people feel ashamed of themselves
I agree with this.
i don't get what's so funny or smart about going out of your way to make sure fat people feel ashamed of themselves
"Different strokes" and all that jazz.
i don't get what's so funny or smart about going out of your way to make sure fat people feel ashamed of themselves
Because being malevolent and douchey is cool. Because it helps them to survive.
"Different strokes" and all that.
Nah it's just being an edgelord I think losing weight is easier than people let on but come on
i don't get what's so funny or smart about going out of your way to make sure fat people feel ashamed of themselves
I don't get what's so great about convincing people that being obese and unhealthy is beautiful.
Nah it's just being an edgelord I think losing weight is easier than people let on but come on
Because having a sense of humor that is not compatible with most people's sensibilities is being an edgelord... right. It's very reductionist, and we've discussed this time and time again. Humor is subjective, let's just leave it at that.
i don't get what's so funny or smart about going out of your way to make sure fat people feel ashamed of themselves
I think its mostly a reaction to "Health at Every Size" and other movements that want people to just accept that they're unfit. I've read quite a few fatbro stories that celebrate people overcoming their weight problems and most of these threads are generally pretty fun and positive.
i don't get what's so funny or smart about going out of your way to make sure fat people feel ashamed of themselves
because people love shitting on others for some reason and before anyone else goes "project harpoon? oh it's about being healthy" just stop for a sec and think about just exactly how they "encourage" a healthier life style obesity is unhealthy for you, but shaming and harassing others for their size is even more unhealthy, it's not gonna help anyone getting motivated fuck this entire thing
i don't get what's so funny or smart about going out of your way to make sure fat people feel ashamed of themselves
Project Harpoon was a response to the ridiculous project recently to create fat versions of a lot of popular female figures such as Lara Croft (while saying they were more 'realistic', lol). Leave it to 4chan to call something like this Project Harpoon. :v:
I don't get what's so great about convincing people that being obese and unhealthy is beautiful.
I'd say enabling. I could never tell a smoker or an alcoholic that what he does is okay, and that he's fine... with a straight face. Same thing applies here, IMO. I just don't think it's right to encourage that lifestyle.
Because having a sense of humor that tends to offend most people's sensibilities is being an edgelord... right. It's very reductionist, and we've discussed this time and time again. Humor is subjective, let's just leave it at that.
Albeit I don't agree with the majority that this could be aimed at, but I must fully agree on targeting Tess as she's a disgusting role model. Instead of trying to galvanize her followers to change their body she promotes the "Big Beautiful Woman" look despite being morbidly obese, which can adversely move her followers or people uneasy about their weight into the wrong line of thinking. If she was thin, at the healthy amount of weight she could be, then I do believe that she could be a very beautiful woman capable of modelling. However with the current trend that she's going I believe that it's fully correct to target her hypocrisy.
because people love shitting on others for some reason and before anyone else goes "project harpoon? oh it's about being healthy" just stop for a sec and think about just exactly how they "encourage" a healthier life style
Okay? As far as I am aware they "encourage" a healthier life style by showing how someone could look after a healthier life style. How is making someone look subjectively better with photoshop worse than making someone look subjectively worse with photoshop? A lot of the time I am seeing words like "shaming" but really, how? If you show someone as they are and as the could be with effort is that really shaming? What if you show someone as they are and someone that is similar to what they could be with effort?
and before anyone else goes "project harpoon? oh it's about being healthy"
The goal is obviously to create laughs, not encourage good health.
whoever came up with this sure is getting his laughs right now

She could make a very powerful impact if she went through diet and exercise - it's not like she's poor to do that... she has the means to get top dietitians and personal trainers; in 6 months or less she'd be a whole new person, and showed every one of her followers that who you are is but a stepping stone of what you can become. But instead, insists on playing the victim.
Okay? As far as I am aware they "encourage" a healthier life style by showing how someone could look after a healthier life style.
clearly this is what they have in mind when they call the fucking thing "project harpoon"
whoever came up with this sure is getting his laughs right now
They're getting they're laughs.
clearly this is what they have in mind when they call the fucking thing "project harpoon"
I could care less if they called it "five year plan", it's what they do that counts.
Okay? As far as I am aware they "encourage" a healthier life style by showing how someone could look after a healthier life style.
Terrible photoshops where they enlarge the tits on most of the women are hardly showing them how they could look. Weight loss has more drastic changes than you just being a thinner version of your large self. Much like weight gain has more changes than you just being a larger version of your stick self (I still wonder how I'd look with any fat at all on my skeleton ass body, photoshop is not the answer though). 4Channers are in no way doing this with positive intentions, it's just another page in their big book of things they hate that they've decided to mock and act on.
I'd say enabling. I could never tell a smoker or an alcoholic that what he does is okay, and that he's fine... with a straight face. Same thing applies here, IMO. I just don't think it's right to encourage that lifestyle.
Fat people do not require as much "enabling" as disabled people, injured people, old people.. Also, anyone who shames fat people also shames ugly people. This entire thing is about insecurities over appearances.
There is legitimate debate to be had over what is and isn't a healthy weight, but let's not pretend Project Harpoon (even the name lmao) is doing anything positive. It's just 4chan edgelords making fun of fat people.
body acceptance =/= "fat enabling"
