Housing Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the project would cost $45bn (£30bn) and take five to seven years to complete. He said the aim was to ease congestion and overpopulation in Cairo over the next 40 years. The announcement was made at an investment conference that aims to revive the Egyptian economy.
Interesting idea. It's strange really, when you think about it. Major settlements are almost all based on an original community of settlers or indigenous peoples, and we don't really see new settlements being founded anymore, instead just expanding existing ones for thousands of years. Very interested to hear what name they'll settle on.
Shit's so fucked let's just start over

Turkey did it too
It's always interesting when the capital of a country changes.
Why don't they just expand around the borders? Did they run out of room or something? I know the Pyramids are nearby (like literally right next to it) but I'm not sure about any other monuments or protected areas.

A lot of people and professions kinda need to be as close to the actual centre as possible, mainly if the infrastructure and mass transit aren't well developed (which is exactly the case). The city is also rather outdated with it's infrastructure and such. In the end it's wholly possible that starting a new capital will be simply cheaper and faster than attempting to re-engineer and administratively redesign Cairo.

Hell, they even constructed an artificial lake for Canberra.

I'm such a sucker for these kind of cities. They look so cool.

Originally Alexandria was considered the "Be all end all" city of Egypt for quite a long time. However, Cairo was founded during the Fatimid dynasty, and basically became a massive center for education and economics, and was considered by some to be the main rival to Baghdad, which at the time was a hugely important city. But of course, as time goes on, corruption wracked the city and put it below its original glory. The creation of a new capital is...kinda curious
I live in Canberra. Its actually nice having a well designed city, a traffic jam in canberra is like 15 minutes longer than normal and lasts like half an hour. Its actually pretty dope. The city is also really nicely balanced out with green spaces.
I love seeing a city get designed from the ground up to be built all at once. And I'd imagine developers and city planners and all the other associated workers love it as well because they don't have so many constraints to work with like "We can't put a park there, that's owned by <insert company name>" or "We can't put a rail line in anywhere near here because of noise complaints from the residential area" Plus I mean jesus look at how gorgeous and perfectly planned/laid out these 'from scratch' cities are.

Russia did it too in the 1800s Moscow was always the capital, petersburg was built as the new capital
Yeah, Brasilia city was one of the best things that were engineered in our country, the city was so carefully planned that it even looks like an airplane from up the top and brought major development for the west part of the country
If you guys like that, you should read about Brasilia's recycling and public housing programs. Absolutely fantastic stuff.
They should do this for London Goddammit it feels like a fucking nightclub with the amount of people everywhere.
Hey, someone finally got around to stealing Walt Disney's EPCOT idea!
Look at the date next to the signature. Checkmate.
Look at the date next to the signature. Checkmate.
Oh. Huh. Wonder if that partially inspired his bizarro megacity of the future, then? Apparently the lead city planner and architect of Canberra was one of the first to use the Wheel and Spokes design in a planned city, which was one of the core parts of the EPCOT project.
Turkey did it too
Ankara has existed since ancient times.
I wonder how the US capital would be like if they moved it ad well.
I wonder how the US capital would be like if they moved it ad well.
There's no reason for that, DC seems to work pretty well. Imagine if the capital was in New York, or Los Angeles.
It's always interesting when the capital of a country changes.
And a massive kick in the balls for arrogant capital-cunts.
