He praised his two predecessors as "men of courage" at the Vatican service, the first time in history that two popes have been canonised at the same time. The Mass was attended by Pope Emeritus Benedict, who quit as pope last year, and roughly 100 foreign delegations. Analysts say Francis is trying to balance the conservative legacy of John Paul with the reforming zeal of John. At the climax of the service, Pope Francis said in Latin: "We declare and define Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II to be saints and we enrol them among the saints, decreeing that they are to be venerated as such by the whole Church." Relics of each man - a container of blood from John Paul and a piece of skin from John - were placed near the altar. Pope Francis paid tribute to the two new saints as "priests, bishops and popes of the 20th Century".
So is this the equivalent of a bankers bonus to popes?
:pwn:
They're pretty much microscopic, and rather symbolic.
You think that's bad?
Good enough for Osiris, good enough for a saint.
So, what miracles were they proven to have had a part in?
So, what miracles were they proven to have had a part in?
For John Paul II, two 'miraculous recoveries' http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12192639 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-23198312

Where is Gove when you need him?
To become a saint you need two miracles, but the current pope can change it to only needing one if he feels like it, which he did with these two.
You think that's bad?
There is no way in hell the owner of this hand isn't a lich.
For a second I thought that was burnt Chicken teriyaki with rice.
I was going to eat that mummy!
To become a saint you need two miracles, but the current pope can change it to only needing one if he feels like it, which he did with these two.
I thought you just have to show up at the saint's hideout and get beat up by Johnny Gat.
For a second I thought that was burnt Chicken teriyaki with rice.
A teriyaki mummy? I'm pretty sure that's in a Futurama episode.
So the requirements of getting to be a saint are now down from "3 miracles, atleast 1 of them after death" to "had to be a pope at some point"?
So the requirements of getting to be a saint are now down from "3 miracles, atleast 1 of them after death" to "had to be a pope at some point"?
The requirements were pretty low to begin with. Most of them were chosen through bribes or popularized by fictionional stories.
A bit creepy I have to admit
While creepy, it shouldn't be surprising, seeing as how Catholics believe they literally eat Jesus's flesh and drink his blood
A bit creepy I have to admit
The creepiness of what they do is amplified in some large cathedrals, where you have rooms full of bits of saint.
