• Mandatory Spending Cuts: The Dem plan, the GOP plan and why they'll happen anyway
The Democrats

Washington (CNN) -- Senate Democrats proposed a $110 billion measure Thursday to put off mandatory across-the-board spending cuts set to take effect March 1. The package made public by Senate Democratic leaders calls for replacing the so-called sequester cuts with a combination of increased tax revenue from millionaires, ending agriculture subsidies and reducing defense spending after the war in Afghanistan ends. Republican leaders in Congress have demanded that Democrats come up with a plan for avoiding the imminent cuts, technically known as sequestration. However, the GOP opposes any increase in tax rates or other steps to bring in more tax revenue, saying the nation needs to reduce the cost of government.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/14/politics/congress-spending-cuts/index.html
The Republicans

Washington (CNN) - A top House Republican is planning to unveil a government funding bill that attempts to avoid a battle over a government shutdown next month. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, R-Kentucky, told reporters he planned to introduce a bill later this month that would continue funding federal agencies through September 30th. Government agencies run out of funding at the end of March, and unless Congress acts before then, many would be forced to stop operating. An array of government services and agencies could be impacted including IRS processing of tax returns and medical research. But Rogers' decision to move forward with a continuing resolution or "CR" could face an intense fight with House conservatives who are arguing the level he is proposing– $1.043 trillion, which was set in the debt deal passed in 2011, does not cut enough from federal programs. Many of those fiscal conservatives have argued that the level should be lower – at $974 billion, because they believe Congress should be continuing to cut more from the federal budget.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/02/13/top-house-republican-has-a-plan-to-avoid-government-shutdown/
Why it'll happen anyway

That budget measure -- a kind of fiscal doomsday device called sequestration -- was extended for two months this year already. Unless Congress and the president reach a deal to avert them, those spending cuts come due on March 1. Federal agencies are busy trying to find ways to minimize the impact and delay immediate reductions. Lawmakers are wringing their hands with forecasts of doom and gloom, all the while playing a game of political chicken. Democrats, who offered their own plan Thursday, want to replace the automatic cuts with a mix of tax increases and more gradual spending cuts. Republicans want to replace it solely with other spending cuts. Then there are those who may be willing to bring the hammer down and let the cuts occur, hinting that a dramatic curtailment in spending is exactly what the government needs to ease its multi-trillion-dollar debt. "Tea party people are saying the sequester is a pittance," Sen. Rand Paul, a leader of the tea party faction of the Republican party, told CNN's Candy Crowley. "It's just very much the beginning. $1 trillion? We're going to increase spending by $9 trillion. So even with the sequester, spending goes up by $7-or-$8 trillion over the next several years. We're not even getting close to scratching the surface of the problem." Still, caught in the middle are thousands of U.S. military members, teachers and federal workers who are at the backbone of government's basic ability to function.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/15/politics/sequester-real/index.html?hpt=po_c1
Debt Ceiling was amazing and the sequel was great with its surprise ending (OMG they actually raised taxes) but now I think they are dragging it out too much and they have run out of ideas. I thought the second one was meant to be the end but then they had the post-credits scene where you saw the sequestration deal escaping in a helicopter and it was like fuck
This is going to happen man shit's gonna go down man
Why is his telephone faced away from him, who does that?
If you watch the movie (Inglorious Basterds) it makes sense. There's a dude who's sitting across from him whom he wants to make a phone call.
