I am planning on purchasing a new mother board, processor, ram, and ssd in the near future.
How do I go about reinstalling windows? I have the free upgrade version of windows 10, so I don't have a product key.
I heard that the license is linked with your Microsoft account, but I can't seem to find information confirming this from a promising source.
I assume I will have to boot the PC from a thumb drive with the windows 10 installer?
Where will I go from there?
I would like to know what you had to end up doing to get your copy of windows 10 on a "new" PC.

You should be able to download an iso of Windows 10 from their website.
Get the installer creator from here.
-Helifreak beat me to it-
Either it will activate fine, or just contact Microsoft Support and tell them what you did and they will activate a new key for you.

Alright, that sounds like a good plan. I was just worried, and didn't want to have to purchase a copy of an OS I already own
When the OOBE asks for a product key, just click skip.
I've had a few machines recently, which automatically activated - even though they are new machines, and not logged in with an MS Account. I think the hardware ID check is a little broken ;-)

yeah, that's good idea to contact the Microsoft Support team for a new activation key.
I'm pretty sure activating Windows 10 follows the same rules as older versions of Windows, except you can skip the key entry screen if you log in with the same Microsoft account.
Meaning, as long as you don't try to install Windows on a billion different computers across the tri-county area, and the key was at one point in the hands of a legitimate Microsoft reseller, you should be fine.
