5 Year Old in coma after throat slit by own mother
Texas Children’s Protective Services has filed paperwork seeking custody of a 5-year-old Magnolia boy fighting for his life after his mother allegedly slit his throat late Friday.
Meanwhile, the Magnolia Police Department has no plans to file charges against the boy’s father, who discovered the boy was unresponsive, left the residence at 165 Roy Street and called 911.
Michael Spurlock, 5, remains in Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center in Houston, where he has undergone one surgery and is in a medically induced coma, Magnolia police Sgt. Jose Lopez said Monday.
“I can’t say he’s progressing,” Lopez said. “We learned the knives did puncture his brain, but we don’t know how it will affect him. It’s a game of unknowns.”
Police responded to the home of David Spurlock Sr. and Daphne Spurlock, where they learned Daphne Spurlock allegedly slit Michael’s throat and crushed his chest around midnight Friday, reportedly trying to free “demons” from the little boy, police said.
Daphne Spurlock, 45, is being held with no bond in the Montgomery County Jail on a charge of attempted capital murder of a child under 6 years old, according to jail records.
She allegedly slit her son’s throat from one side to the other, then allegedly stomped on his chest and stabbed him in the facial area multiple times, police previously said.
There have never been any calls made to the Spurlock home by police, Lopez said.
“This is a Christian family; we’ve had no problems with them,” he said. “There’s been nothing that raised any flags.”
But CPS still requested custody of Michael.
“We have concerns about the father being able to protect (him),” spokeswoman Gwen Carter said. “We feel we need to take custody.
“There are relatives who may be more than appropriate (for custody), so we will be following up with them.”
CPS has no records of any visits made to the Spurlock home, Carter said.
A neighbor said she thought Daphne Spurlock was a “sweet lady.”
“I’ve known David many years; he went to school with my kids,” Dorothy Davis said. “Whenever I saw (Daphne), I thought she was a fine lady. To me, she’s a sweet lady.
“I just feel like something clicked. I don’t see that in her.”
David Spurlock, 59, has “a good attitude,” Lopez said. “He’s fully cooperative with the Police Department. He’s a God-loving, family loving man. He’s very sincere.”
David Spurlock “didn’t comprehend” what was in front of him when he saw his son with his throat slit, and that’s why he left the residence to call 911, Lopez said.
“He’s in love with Daphne; he understands it’s wrong,” Lopez said.
Magnolia police are helping David Spurlock financially through the department’s police officers’ association and working to find counseling for the father and son.
“He called Michael his miracle baby. He said God gave him a baby and he wasn’t going to take him away,” Lopez said. “We look for signs that people don’t want to be around us. He wanted nothing more than to be around us.”
In addition to the more critical wounds Michael suffered, he also had a number of defensive wounds on his arms, indicating he was attempting to fight off his mother’s alleged attack, Lopez said.
“Dad’s going to have a tough road with that baby,” he said.
Ugh, I hate when the text goes like that. It's spaced out in the source.
How can you just slit a toddler's throat. What could a child possibly do to deserve death? It's a fucking kid. Jesus...
I think the mother deserves life imprisonment for this, some things are so bad, that even if they aren't murder, the person should get a sentence that a murderer would get.

There's your answer, right there, she was crazy.
I hate how some people interpret their religion like this. It's a disgrace to religious people everywhere. This is why people like to think that Christians are batshit psycho.
Jesus Christ!
Is this the middle ages? Are there seriously still some people who believe in demons that possess children and believe so firmly in them that they would slit a child's throat?
Is it me, or does this sound a lot like the fucking Binding of Issac? Especially about "freeing demons."

There are plenty of murders and felonies of various degrees that the criminal essentially tries to explain as, "God told me to do this," or, "I am doing God's work," among various other responses along the same line. Whether the individual is actually religious (and/or crazy) enough to genuinely believe what they say, or just using it as a scapegoat excuse, varies from person-to-person.
I'm sure there's still individuals that really do believe that there are witches that they should stone to death out there.

Texan woman brutalizes child after playing religious game "Binding of Isaac", More at 11. i can see it happening.
Man. Why is it that everytime i hear these news, religion is right there in the center of it?
I'd kill to see a murder where Religion isn't a direct, indirect or far removed influence on the murder... Well, i wouldn't kill...
Why does this shit keep happening?
To much of society, religion is the second-most reason why murder takes place. Video games are number one, obviously.
Religion does not seem to fare well with the mentally unstable, too often you see people hurt because of it.

She's obviously crazy and needs psychiatric help, not prison.

She looks like the batshit insane black woman who would do something like this.
She cut his throat, stabbed him in the face multiple times, AND stomped on his chest. If I did that to a kid I would not be getting 'help'. I say life in prison is about as fair as you can get here, she's out of society and yet society spares her life.

How would that help anything? The woman is obviously mentally disturbed. She needs immediate mental help.
Religion does not seem to fare well with the mentally unstable, too often you see people hurt because of it.
Doesn't help that religion itself requires mental or emotional instability to take root in your life.
Most religious people never found religion themselves, they were born into it and raised to believe in such crazy ideals that when most of these kids reach adulthood they are so sure of their beliefs that they would be capable of doing things like this. Not surprised at all when I read the "freeing of demons" part.
But she is probably just pulling the crazy card for better treatment.
Sick bitch, should get life or the rope.
I am just wondering what we do to her now to get the "angels" out of her.
Is it me, or does this sound a lot like the fucking Binding of Issac? Especially about "freeing demons."
Sounds like Isaac, but from Dead Space, with the crushing and cutting...
before I opened this thread, I thought to myself "there will be at least one person who rated it funny"
and guess what
I was right
What if actually a demon possessed her and later said that to blame god?
god fucking damn it Texas
Are you fucking kidding me.
But she is probably just pulling the crazy card for better treatment.
I don't think it's really possible to pull shit like this without actually being crazy. Even if she doesn't believe all this craziness about demons, there's still some definite problems with how highly she values human life.
A ton of crazy shit is always happening in my state for some reason.
