• Space wind exists
More than 20 years ago, researchers proposed the existence of a space wind--a steady flow of charged particles--inside the Earth's magnetosphere, the region of space governed by our magnetic field. After years of theoretical work, Iannis Dandouras, an astrophysicist from the University of Toulouse in France, has directly detected this plasma wind in data from the European Space Agency's Cluster spacecraft. This cool space breeze is made up of material from the plasmasphere-- basically a giant space donut of dense, cold plasma that wraps around the Earth, with us as its donut hole. The material in the plasmasphere doesn't always stay put in its neat, donut-like shape, with some plasma escaping in plumes out toward the magnetosphere, the larger surrounding bubble of the Earth's magnetic field.
http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-07/first-direct-evidence-points-existence-space-wind
Never heard of our planet being described as a donut hole before
Never heard of our planet being described as a donut hole before
They didn't, They refereed to the plasmasphere as being donut-like in shape. I thought this was common knowledge though...
cold plasma that wraps around the Earth, with us as its donut hole.
It refers to us as donut hole
So SS13 is factually accurate. Still, fuck space wind.
So does this mean [t]http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/screenshots/treasure_planet_23.png[/t]
The Currents of Space. Man Asimov was great...
"Cool space breeze?" Is that relative, because when I think of plasma, I think of high temps and charged particles. [editline]3rd July 2013[/editline] And radio detonators.
The idea of Earth as a "doughnut hole" sounds reminiscent of Elder Scrolls lore
This doesn't really surprise me, since we already have solar wind, and in a medium that has particles in it, the mass motion of a group of gas-state or lower particles is technically a wind, right?
Electric Universe.
Is it just me or does Australian Popular Science seem to remove EVERY article minutes after posting? Any other source?
There's air in space? I thought in order to have wind, one must have air
There's air in space? I thought in order to have wind, one must have air
It's the wrong word for it, it's just a bunch of charged particles emitting from various sources (mainly the sun) that exert force on the stuff it hits. [editline]3rd July 2013[/editline] It's why we get Auroras, too.
oh great now the Mi-Go are going to fly here with their flappy floppy space wings and avenge the humiliation of their planet
