What sets it apart from traditional simulators is the robot arm's ability to keep the rider moving or spinning on two axis at the same time, allowing it to better recreate the feeling of actual flight maneuvers. The large space needed for the arm to whip a pilot about means that projection screens are impractical, so they simply wear a head tracking video helmet that ensures that what they see matches what they feel. The movements of the arm in the video are frighteningly fast, and while it can reproduce the feeling of fighting up to six Gs so a pilot can affectively train for combat, I suspect it's capable of ramping that up to the point where it could easily cause bodily harm. So I'm suspecting you won't see it appearing as a new thrill ride at your local theme park anytime soon.
http://gizmodo.com/5861828/the-aussies-have-built-one-bad-ass-flight-simulator
Shame it'll be useless by our pilots, the upside down flying would probably be bothersome.
That thing looks damn intimidating.
Barf simulator
Oh hey, I went to that university... for 1 year
Shame it'll be useless by our pilots, the upside down flying would probably be bothersome.
they wouldnt be upside down anymore
Yeah, I would be so down for trying something like this. Looks crazy.
My granddad helped program the first flight simulators, and when they were first making it, they tested one with hydraulics that would mimic a helicopter flying, and one without. They proved that they didn't need to have a flight simulator with hydraulics, for the human brain already compensated for that. So is this needed? Not really. Is it cool? Fuck yeah.
Oh hey, I went to that university... for 1 year
My girlfriend went there for HALF of a year before swapping to RMIT. Deakin is fucking weird.

Of course there's no replacement for actual hands on stick experience, but this is a good improvement.
Holy shit that looks like fun.
It's all cool and dandy until the simulator decides the pilot is wasting it's time and smears him all over the wall.
Now we just need 2 of them so we can do some crazy dog fights.
Id rather play Tribes Ascend on it.
Now we just need 2 of them so we can do some crazy dog fights.
Fuck! Yes! And wind tunnels! And a legit ejection pod!
And a legit ejection pod!
And then you eject into the ceiling and get serious brain damage / internal bleeding
Fuck! Yes! And wind tunnels! And a legit ejection pod!
Why would you need wind tunnels?
Wind tunnel? But you're inside a cockpit
Wind tunnel? But you're inside a cockpit
And all the forces are simulated
Haha whoa why hasn't anyone commercialized this.. Though it's a bit high-tech for that. Other than that it looks like any amusement park ride.
I wonder whether or not it effectively simulates the blur factor for instance, I can see the terrain in this video perfectly whereas the first time doing stall spins it was just a blur and I couldn't visually differentiate anything outside the cockpit
I know what I want for my next birthday. Shame I have no chance of getting one.
I know what I want for my next birthday. Shame I have no chance of getting one.
Why not go for the real thing?
Wow looks awesome, its great to see Australia creating things like this.
What happens when you crash?
Why not go for the real thing?
A real plane won't fit in my garage.
When I went to D.C. I went to the Air and Space Museum and played with the Flight Simulator. Shit is awesome. [editline]23rd November 2011[/editline] and some kid pissed himself there
A real plane won't fit in my garage.
Most casual pilots don't own planes, you hire them out when you want to fly.
