I want to put it on the USB then install from it without affecting Windows 7. I want to keep windows and use GRUB or whatever it is called to choose between mint and windows on startup. So can someone please put a small guide here on how?
unetbootin or just do wubi
Download Linus Mint 9.
Download Unetbootin from sourceforge.
Install Mint 9 to said USB stick.
Reboot with USB stick in the PC.
Install Mint 9 when it gets to the Mint desktop.
When you get to the partitioner, manually partition your harddrive like so:
[....Windows....] [ **SWAP**] [____Ext4____]
Make sure the Ext4 partition has / as it's mount point.
Finish installation, and reboot the PC. You should see GRUB with lots of entries, the top one Linux Mint 9, the bottom one Windows 7.
Enjoy.

Wait what? Picture please?
I deleted my swap partition because i have 4GB of RAM, but you can see that the Windows partition will need to be resized in order to make room for Linux.

I decided I want to install to my external HD, how do I do that?
well if the harddrive is blank, just make the whole thing Ext4, with / as the mount point. :)

It isn't blank, it has steam with 200 GB of games.

Then shrink the Windows partition down by a few gigs. Linux Mint 9 only takes up about 4GB, so give it at least 6GB or more.
45GB :wtc:
45GB? Where'd you get that from?
I'm sure she forgot a decimal point.
Even then, 4.5 GB THAT IS A LOT
So can anyone set up a guide like Pixel's but with pics showing actually how to set the partition up? I am very new to doing more than one OS.
Anyone?
It's very easy...
Just shrink the Windows partition to the left by a few Gigs. Then install Mint 9 to the unallocated space.
While it may sound rude, if you don't know how to resize a partition, trust me, you should just give up on a proper installation, Google wubi and use that.
I never resize partitions, either keep or delete.
If I put mint 9 on my usb with unetbootin is it gonna delete my school stuff on there?

Yes. Back that shit up in Windows/an external USB drive.
Also, I know that Ubuntu does partitions automatically when you install it, only requiring that you define how large you want it with a slider. Is it the same in Mint?

If I get an answer saying mint doesn't I will just get Ubuntu.

Wrong. Unetbootin does not format jack shit. It just adds files to whatever is already on the USB stick.
Ok well just in case because the USB has certain school stuff that won't go on my comp so I will try to find a blank CD, how big does the cd need to be? I think I remember the CDs being about 800MB. Is that ok for Ubuntu?

I'm pretty sure that CD should work. Also, I thought you had to format the flash drive with Unetbootin. Oh well, it may have been something else I was doing.
I decided to do USB, the CD was actually 700 MB, not enough space, so I put Mint 9 on the USB with Unetbootin but when I restarted it never gave me the choice to boot mint.

Go to your BIOS and tell it to boot from the flash drive before your hard drive. The flash drive may be labeled as a USB device or a hard drive. It's different for every motherboard but it shouldn't be hard to find.

Ok then after I install mint 9, if I restart will it give me the option to go in to windows? If so then do I need to go BACK into the BIOS and change back to hard-drive?

You will be installing it to the hard drive, so there will be no need to use the flash drive once you're done installing.

See that sticky at the top of the Linux section? Read it.
Weird, I told my BIOS to boot from USB Device and it booted into windows 7.
Anyone?
