Technically the land has to be uninhabited first.
So the Norse hold a rightful claim to the Faroe islands, Iceland, and Greenland (when the Vikings arrived, the Eskimos had yet to arrive, and when they did, they slowly pushed the Norwegians out over the course of the middle ages).
