Self-driving cars are emerging as the Next Big Thing in tech, but striking out on your own can be difficult, meaning you'll probably need a gig at Google, Uber, or a major auto maker to really dig in and make progress—until now.
The DeepDrive project came up with a unique way to let tech-savvy types tinker with autonomous driving tech—it repurposed popular video game Grand Theft Auto V as a self-driving car simulator. Companies like Intel have been playing around with it, but now it's open source thanks to an integration with Universe, which emerged last month as "a software platform for measuring and training an AI's general intelligence across the world's supply of games, websites and other applications."
The Universe integration with GTA V comes courtesy of OpenAI, a non-profit research company launched in 2015 by Elon Musk and others. "To use it, you'll just need a purchased copy of GTA V, and then your Universe agent will be able to start driving a car around the streets of a high-fidelity virtual world," OpenAI said in a blog post.
"GTA V gives researchers access to a rich, diverse world for testing and developing AI. Its island setting is almost one fifth the size of Los Angeles, giving access to a broad range of scenarios to test systems," OpenAI said. "Add to that the 257 different vehicles, 7 types of bicycles, and 14 weather types, and its possible to explore a huge number of permutations using a single simulator."
Sooo... A game with thousands of AI-driven cars now got AI driven cars? I clearly don't quite understand what this is.
I mean, I can see how a virtual environment could be useful as a testbed, but since all cars are AI in it, and don't really act naturally like real drivers do, I can't see how it can be of that much use.
Now try it in ATS.

I think it only uses the raw screen input as its sensors, Which for ai, would be pretty impressive. The AI in the game follows waypoints and uses functions to determine if other in game objects are nearby.
Or I could be wrong and its like you said, just another ai car, which wouldn't be all that interesting. But it could be learning basic driving behaviors in a very controlled changing environment.
If the AI improves in such a manner that you can set it "targets" to chase, and can handle high speed chases in at least moderately dense traffic, I can see this being quite fun for a crew of four as now the "driver" can bring his own arms to bear without being distracted by driving. Sure, it might take some fun out of the actual maneuvering in between traffic, but a crew of four confidently being able to shoot without too many human errors sounds like a good old time all of its own

Imagine having a realtime camera on the front of your car in GTA V. what the camera sees is what gets sent to the server which is processing what the car should do. This project essentially uses openAI to recognize objects in-game (road markings, other cars, peds) just as self driving cars do in real life
Another video with off-board camera angles and inner city driving:

But GTAV has the second-worst driving of the series, after GTAIV.

Are you saying GTA 3, VC, and SA had superior driving to GTA IV and V?
:speechless:

Holy SHIT that's awesome.
All videogame jokes aside, this release is incredible. Usually a self-driving AI sim is private and costs several hundred $ to license, pretty ingenius they repurposed an existing game that features all weathers, environments and cars for 60$.

I doubt he's played them tbh
for those interested in the subject, please look up NEAT and stuff like mari/o, TORCS NEAT, flappy bird learning, snake NEAT, etc.
incredibly interesting area, with a lot of fun applications. its also a good approach to basic neural networks and AI, being intuitive enough to produce results easily seen and yet requiring a good sense of what is needed.
-snip-
The great thing about having simulations be used for training self driving is that you can increase the time within the simulation if the training algorithm can keep up.

Considering that you don't lose control utterly for no reason in those games, yeah. You can say that it's more "realistic" or "cinematic", but having to redo a chase for the sixth fucking time because the back wheels of my car suddenly turned into balls of ice like happened all the time in GTAIV isn't fun. I don't give a shit if it's cinematic.
I doubt he's played them tbh
I have, actually. I've beaten GTA 3 the most and I actually routed Portland for speedrunning for a long time until I realized I could just never beat Oasiz and Adam_AK. But, you know, make baseless accusations and assumptions all you want. GTAV and IV's driving is still bullshit. Being able to know what my actions will do, at all times, without random RNG bullshit suddenly deciding to throw my car across the map is superior to "cinematic" driving in my view. Here's some of the zones of Liberty City just off the top of my head: Callahan Point, Chinatown, Portland Harbor, Portland View, Francis International, Cedar Grove, Fort Staunton, St. Mark's.. I could go on. My favorite car is the Esperanto, painted sky-blue, and my favorite weapon is the pistol because you can mow down anyone with it. Favorite mission is Drive Misty For Me just because of its iconic nature, and my least favorite is Bait because of the RNG invovled when trying to set a good time. So, yeah, I have played it. Do I need to prove I'm autistic with Vice City and San Andreas too?
And for the record I'm not alone in this. IV was resoundly maligned for its poor driving physics. Driving Roman's taxi is like throwing a bathtub down a hallway. The only reason V's driving wasn't outright criticized is because it's better than IV's, which isn't really saying much. The only thing V really improved on significantly was the bike physics, which are a lot better but still have bullshit Euphoria glitches where you just suddenly fall off your bike like Cole Phelps on a staircase.
SA had excellent, fun driving physics too, so I'm not just biased toward 3.
But GTAV has the second-worst driving of the series, after GTAIV.
IV had the best driving though. It was actually fun because the cars actually handled like cars.
When my roommate bought V on the 360 and I got home from the army for the weekend I was super excited to try it out but 10 seconds in to the starting mission I was already disappointed about the driving physics being brought back to way too much grip.

I don't know if you've ever driven a car, but they don't handle anything like GTAIV's cars did. I mean, to be fair, they don't handle like GTA3's, but at least GTA3's don't throw you around and frustrate your dick off.
Okay but can you fill a world with self-driving cars, all trying to avoid accidents, and try to crash into the AI's and total their cars?

Loading up GTA now to see how it might respond to accidents.

They handle a whole lot more like GTAIV than any earlier GTA.

Have YOU ever driven a car fast? You can't go full throttle through corners expecting the car to stick. I liked IV handling because you actually had to countersteer once you got oversteer. In all the other games you feel like a god damn train

Or if you're going all out in a Blista Compact (which is FWD) you'd understeer like crazy through the corner unless you let go of the gas and blipped the brake right before the corner begins.
Just like how a real FWD car behaves at high speeds during tight corners.

So basically, you want an arcade-style vehicle mechanic that can take turns at 50mph and has no suspension? Nice. 'Cause what GTAIV and GTAV did was add actual suspension physics, where the weight of the vehicle and level of load during pitch and roll were effected by gravity instead of just raw inputs. Imo, GTAIV's driving was the most realistic, GTAV's was just an easier, more fun version of 4's. If you've ever driven your average sedan, the fucking thing body rolls like a boat.
I've been racing/autocrossing cars for over 3 years now and I can say this from a factual standpoint - San Andreas, Vice City, and GTA3 are arcade, plain and simple. I prefer realism over handholding, but hey, we all have our opinions.
my only gripe with GTAV driving is their enforced speed limit for all cars. everything else is pretty much perfect.
IV had the best driving though. It was actually fun because the cars actually handled like cars.

well i wouldn't say iv was realistic but is sure as hell was more fun and more varied
gta v driving is really a let down in comparison, still better than the any pre-iv game though

It's not realistic, but you know what you're doing. It's Grand Theft Auto. Grand Theft Auto has and always will be an arcadey shooter-driver, and the fact they've been trying to push hard "realism" shit by making the gameplay like Max Payne 3 and making the driving like I want to kill myself is fucking stupid and it's why the story is the only (barely) enjoyable part of GTAIV and GTAV.
Realism in driving in games is fine, but it has its place. I don't play GTA for realistic driving. Especially when there's missions that require you to perfectly and expertly chase someone without stalling for a second otherwise you fail and have to restart the entire thing.
Really my big qualm is why they chose GTAV rather than a driving sim. I guess the excuse is that GTAV has lots of other cars to dodge and experiment with, but the pedestrian drivers in GTAV are also very unrealistic and all basically act like drift missiles. You won't believe me when I say this, but pedestrian drivers in GTAV and every other GTA game have completely different physics to the the player's car and driverless cars. Police, especially, have utterly unbelievably different physics and acceleration. In the old days, pedestrian cars had no physics until they impacted something, which is why they'd bounce so comically. They patched this out, or at least, created the illusion of patching it out.
And by the way, you guys have obviously never played GTA3 if you think every car in it just sticks to the road and can take corners easily. There's a reason rolling your car is a genuine issue in that game. Infact, the Ambulance is best for this. I'd make a video but it'd need me to patch my broken UK Steam release of GTA3 again, which is annoying since the fixed EXE flags up antivirus... basically, if you hit the directional keys at ALL while in the GTA3 ambulance going at high speeds, it instantly careens to one side, and if you press alternating directional keys while going top, you eventually roll like ass.
I liked GTA IV's handling more than GTA V's sticky handling. Though perfection, and realism, is something inbetween.
GTA V with a realistic handling mod is fucking great, and I'll always argue that that's how the game should have been in the first place.
This is really making me want to play GTA3 again. I wish my PS2 wasn't broken.

Stop signs are probably the easiest in a game like this where you only have a few models and textures to recognize. In the real world it's difficult because you have to deal with things like signs that are sun faded or vandalized.
It will still be interesting to see how it handles situations where a sign gets run over or view is blocked by a bus or something like that.
