• 90% chance of buying a 13" MBP tomorrow, but which one?

I want to get the 13" MBP for school, and maybe light gaming (think nothing more stressful than HL2), I'll be using CS4 from time to time but more of a hobby than for actual work. Now, my question is whether there's a reason to pay more for the 2.5GHz over the 2.2GHz system. Looking at benchmarks, adding an extra 2GB of RAM to the 2.2GHz system didn't really speed it up by much, so I'd probably just go ahead and get 250GB HDD instead of the 160GB. Thoughts? Advice?
Well I would have thought it would make a difference when you're doing something big in PS.
Well how much can you spend?
I don't really feel like going over £1,000.
Well I would have thought it would make a difference when you're doing something big in PS.
It was like, faster in loading by a second, maybe two. Not much bother for me. (2.5GHz is like, 13-15 seconds faster, but yeah.) [editline]12:49PM[/editline] The £899 of the base model is pretty much perfect, it's just the harddrive thats kind of meh.
I have a Macbook pro 2.26GHz with 4GB of RAM and I use it all the time. I can run PS and Maya on it perfectly and I sometimes use it to play EVE online. Its a good bit of kit. In my opinion, well worth the money. If you are at school you also get a discount for being a student. I would recommend going into an Apple store and talking to the guys that work there, very helpful.
Can you not get the HE discount? I have the 2.53ghz model and don't regret paying the extra one bit.
I'd have to check, I'm going to Westfields tomorrow so I'll ask them the dealio with Higher Education.

£772, that's rad. But that's a University price, isn't it? I'm only in College, doing A2's.

But then I wouldn't be able to pay in-store, would I? :\ [editline]12:58PM[/editline] But yeah, I have two friends that would probably be up for it, though one is in York, the other in Edinburgh :v:.

Pretend to be said uni person and give their email as the email.

The College discount is much smaller than the Uni discount. [editline]01:03PM[/editline]
Order by the phone number on the page I linked. If the email contains their real name, and I use my card they'll be like, "wat". [editline]01:04PM[/editline] This would be easier to discuss via steam.

It's best if you have a sibling who's at Uni, really.
Hmm, seems a little bit of an effort. Transfer money to their card, have them ship it to me, worry about damage in shipping... On the other hand, super saving.
Hmm, seems a little bit of an effort. Transfer money to their card, have them ship it to me, worry about damage in shipping... On the other hand, super saving.
I saved like, £200 with it, so it's certainly worth the hassle.
If my friend orders through the website, can he have it sent to my address without any issues? [editline]01:12PM[/editline] Though it would probably be safer for him to recieve it, then ship it to me.
It was like, faster in loading by a second, maybe two. Not much bother for me. (2.5GHz is like, 13-15 seconds faster, but yeah.)
He doesn't mean loading, he means working with it. If you edit a big picture, with lots of layers and that stuff, PS really needs much ram.
I don't do any proper photoshopping, hell I'll probably be using GIMP instead and just doodling like a moron. But yeah, I get what your saying. Zooming in/panning through a larger image is slower with less RAM.
Anyone here upgraded a 13" MBP to have a 7200rpm HDD?
Anyone here upgraded a 13" MBP to have a 7200rpm HDD?
No, but it's something I'm considering doing. Apparently it's easy enough to do (I've seen the instructions, looks like a quick/easy job) and the only downsides are the extra heat and lower battery life. Sounds like a decent trade to me.
Just order from that HE link Hexxeh gave you (That's my Uni's HE store) You don't need to provide any proof that you're actually in higher education. I bought mine using a googlemail email address and my home billing address. Just don't do it by phone I bought a 15" with the 7200rpm HDD, but it came built with one, didn't upgrade

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you can get a much better non-mac for less than a MBP, and save loads. You can even buy a little mac sticker and put it on.
Anyone here upgraded a 13" MBP to have a 7200rpm HDD?
Your avatar fucking scares me.
light gaming
Got the basic one, finished GTA IV, Portal, and more. [editline]01:01AM[/editline] :hf:
GTA IV on a MacBook? That must have been painful. Though I still can't decide on which version to get. 2.26GHz, 250GB HDD, 2GB RAM for ~£800 or 2.53GHz, 250GB HDD, 4GB RAM for ~£980 Sure a little more speed is good, but is 30 more points in speedmark 5 and a few seconds in CS4 really worth £180?On the otherhand it won't take 4 days to ship. Hmm.
