It seems Spotify is in for trouble as numerous music lovers are reporting that its freemium streaming service is pushing malware-infested ads to its users.
According to a user report on the company’s forum, running Spotify Free on the desktop periodically causes your browser to open various malicious websites without your permission.
Apparently it's now under control, but best to stay off for awhile to be safe

elaborate plot to sell premium subscriptions tbh
When will ad providers learn to monitor their shit?
When will ad providers learn to monitor their shit?
When there is money involved and/or they get punished for accepting any ads blindly.
Yeah I got tons of redirect ads the other day through Spotify. Suddenly I won several iPhones.
I tend to use Spotify about every day. Haven't had it happen to me personally yet, but this is really irritating.
Actually bought premium for the first time yesterday. :v:
Dumb as shit and it makes me glad that I run a family plan for my parents, myself, and my boyfriend so we avoid this. Doesn't actually make me feel quite so inclined to keep using Spotify however.
Kinda shitty that this happened
Glad I have Spotify student premium tho

Out of curiosity since it is actually something I haven't looked in to strangely enough: Is there any precedent for suing/fining sites and programs with advertisements that fail to protect users from malignant advertisements? Surely on some level they bear a responsibility for maintaining a safe user environment.
Just use their web player and adblock, problem solved. :v:

But then media keys on the keyboard (or in my case my mouse) won't work, which sucks.
I always felt that Spotify was on the up and up and deserved my money, but this definitely tarnishes my view of them. Damn shame.
the last time I heard spotify ads (between premium service) it was 90% this were weird shit like a car insurance ad where they just nagged you about how you have to listen to it because you don't have spotify premium

I do wonder who they use for ad provision. No company is insane enough to try and handle that shit themselves outside of Google, Yahoo, MS, Apple, etc. It's an assload of legal work. So they must be using a third party.
We really need to push third party ad companies to actually screen their shit better, drive-by malware attacks are quite a problem.

Install StreamKeys extension for chrome and you should be ok. Make sure you go through the setup guide.

you just copy that wall of text into your hosts file, right?
you just copy that wall of text into your hosts file, right?
pretty much yeah
I have nearly no ads on Edge, which has no extensions, and skype has none as well too.

Does this mean I can completely get rid of ABP? My chrome is already bloated enough.

Maybe its because I had the 2015 version but it doesn't block ads 100% effectively, still had one show up on sound cloud (didn't notice any on any other site), but I would test it out, its insanely rare to see ads with just the hosts mod
either way it helps protect from malware just a bit more. just another thing to defend against shit.

Why are you even still using ABP instead of the way better ublock origin
When will ad providers learn to monitor their shit?
When it starts costing them profits.
Just use their web player and adblock, problem solved. :v:
I'm doing this but holy shit it sucks compared to the app.
And people wonder why I use adblock + host file
Since it's related, I thought I'd mention that this happens with wowhead too.

That thread is a bit old but it still happens.
In addition to Spotify being one of the most horribly managed services on Earth this really doesn't surprise me
Don't get me wrong, I've never really had problems with streaming music and the quality is pretty damn good. But I've been a Premium user for 3 years and I feel like every update strips a bit more power away from the user. Most recently it was removing the 'notifications' menu to alert you about new music and just giving you a 'Release Radar' playlist that just compiles a bunch of new tracks from the last month instead. Sorting local files is still a nightmare, too.
There's so much stuff I love about Spotify, and I realize that the team needs to worry about so many different versions of the app on both mobile and desktop platforms, but it still feels like they have no idea what they're doing.

Hosts block will remove ads but it will not fix sometimes broken divs or other broken layout html crap that ad blocker plugins do on many sites.

I'd consider this as having none tbh
