Hey guys, if you don't know me by now, I'm Pascall. I typically dick around in the Love Advice types of threads or you'll see me in other places here and there. Probably banning people. I don't usually make threads - and haven't made one in years - but I'm coming to you guys because this is a nice community at the best of times and I'm in a bit of dire straits here.
Here's the description of what happened, cross-posted from my GoFundMe:
Hi! My name is T.J. and I'm creating this campaign to help me out due to an emergency!
I left for vacation with my parents on April 9th, leaving my sister and my grandmother with my sister's newborn back home along with my car that I told them they could borrow if they needed to. My sister needed to pick up some stuff for the baby so she went out to the store. The ignition switch, unfortunately, got stuck. And with no luck in getting the key to turn so the car could start, my sister made the staff aware and left car there overnight on April 12th.
On April 12th, San Antonio was hit by a heavy hail storm with softball sized hail which caused heavy roof and window damage to buildings and extreme window and body damage to car, my car being one of them. With the switch stuck, my windows were exposed and were shattered. The back windshield was destroyed, my side mirrors were cracked, and the front windshield was cracked as well. My art supplies and homework INSIDE the car were ruined by rain and hail.
I sent my car in to get inspected for damage, but unfortunately, they were unable to see the car until May 3rd. And on that day, they considered the water damage to be too excessive (most likely because they let it sit in their repair garage for nearly a month) and that it was more than the car was worth. They totaled my car, my insurance paid the gap, and I was left with no money and no car.
I need somewhere in the ballpark of $10k for a new car!
I can't get to work or school without one and with my $80 a week paycheck, I have very little hopes that I'll be able to finance one. I'm trying to push my hours to at least 30 hours a week but even that may not be enough, considering what I get paid. I'm left dead in the water and I really need a mode of transportation because I cannot keep borrowing my other family member's cars to get to work every single day. It's impractical and asking far too much of them.
I would appreciate any and all support and thanks so much for those who have supported me already. Good vibes to everyone out there and thank you!
The damage in question:

A few things to note:
- $10k is a safety net. I don't really think I'll get all the way to that number. I'm definitely looking for something cheaper and really even $1.5k will be a good down payment.
- The car that I need has to be stable and efficient enough to handle regular 30-45 minute drives across town and back on a daily basis.
- It has to be safe, as I transport fragile equipment and also children frequently.
- It will need to last at least three years.
- I do appreciate information about used cars in the area, but craigslist is sort of my last resort.
- Advice on financing used cars is welcome.
I've already had some awesome people from FP donate including Hezzy, Otterman, Swebonny, Nomad1, fear me, ZestyLemons, Shotz, mcattack1092, and dai.
If you donate and leave your FP name, I'll definitely mention you up here as thanks!
Thanks a ton, guys. I appreciate any and all support.
You should stop by the AA thread and see what advice you can get. For less than $10k you can get a great, reliable, used vehicle.
In the mean time you can try getting lawnmower motor and put it on a bike. My dad did it once.
it's not exciting but 1996-2001 toyota camry is stupid reliable, cheap to fix, comfortable, well built, and can be had for like 2 grand in excellent condition. it's probably the smartest car on the used market.
I know you don't want to buy off craigslist but you should consider it, it really is the cheapest way to get a car. craigslist guys may be sketchy but used car dealerships are a thousand times sketchier. normal rules for meeting strangers while carrying large sums of cash is to bring a buddy (preferably one who knows cars), carry a gun if you can, pepper spray or a taser if you can't.
Edit:
Learned my lesson with this one. I'm open to it, ultimately.
The thing with craigslist is that a lot of the cars around here are stolen and I'd rather not risk it by getting involved with that lol.
I find it hard to believe that most vehicles in your area are stolen. Craigslist is a great tool and being afraid to use it is an issue.
Pitched in a little. Wish ya good luck with the car, because that's a real shitty string of luck.

Well, I won't count it out entirely??
But I just have a heavy preference against it.

I'd just have to rely on uh someone who knew the area to help me out with it, I guess.

That was not "a little" but boy I really appreciate it, dude. Thanks a ton.
Your in Texas, this should be easy for you.

If you don't but that son of a bitch your stupid. Don't pull the gas mileage card game either. Your in a pickle and you need a vehicle.
Cheap. Affordable. Chevy.
Get better insurance boi.
Doesn't quite fit my needs, but I'll bookmark it.

I would if I could. I'm still on my parent's insurance, unfortunately.

Tell your parents to get better insurance. Insurance is fucking expensive but this is why you need a good policy. If you had one, you wouldn't be begging for money on the internet.
Am I the only one who is still overly skeptical about people ebegging. I mean people have been duped in the past by this type of begging.
Nothing forces you to pay anything.

They can't afford better insurance. Otherwise, I'm sure they would have gotten it before now.

I've never been shy of my online presence and if you know where to look, you can find me on facebook and instagram. Instagram has pictures of myself on vacation and my Facebook has the same pictures of the car damage.
I understand people being skeptical though. That's why I went through Postal.

yeah but (iirc) the difference is that those were by some random ass posters nobody actually knew but people wanted to give money to anyways
I helped out through paypal earlier, completely forgot you had a gofundme set up til I went to tumblr to bump. doesn't skew much :I
also yeah the whole thing with random begging threads is it's completely out of the know and the mods can't verify anything, BUT also some of these we'd let slide with a disclaimer that facepunch isn't backing their claims at all.
We know pascall and she's been in this pickle for a little while

No worries, I threw it under the total as an offline donation so it'll still count towards it.

Ever heard of a VIN number? Car history reports? You don't just pay up and get the keys without checking those out.

My unfamiliarity with buying cars is why I was skeptical.
I'm not incapable of changing my mind, I just need someone to help me out with those sorts of things if that's the route I'm gonna go.
ill chip in a bit when my pay comes in, as a dominos driver, i too know the importance of a car
especially when our company cars are unserviced and not registered

yeah just any old dude I won't donate to but someone like pascall who's been a productive member of the community for years, no biggie
Buy 4 crown victorias
when one blows its spark plugs out or starts leaking coolant, just drive the next one.

crown vics are fun and reliable cars, the only problem with them is previous owners. get one that granny drove to church on sundays, don't buy one from anyone under 60
Thanks!
I've got some people giving me some links and stuff so I can do some shopping around properly. For background info: this is the first car I'll be buying on my own, so I want to be really familiar with everything before just jumping on something. So resources and stuff are really helpful.
honestly used is the way2go, buying from retirees is also a bonus since they probably didn't do a lot on the meter, treated the car well and is relatively unscathed
but do what people said here, find something that tickles your fancy, post it in AA and see what they say since they know cars in and out
like if you're that paranoid
you check vin in at least two places (door jamb and windshield), if they don't match make like a bad poster and go away
if they do match, write it down, go to carfax, get carfax
Been wondering about this since I rarely check my hotmail account nowadays. That blows that the car got totaled. Best of luck with finding a replacement!

I find it hard to take someone seriously when they can't even manage to use the appropriate contraction of "you are". It seems like such a minor thing, but it ruins virtually any scrap of credibility you have.
Donated $20. It aint much but it will buy 0.2% of a car for you.
