• Looking to upgrade current rig

I'm currently thinking of upgrading my rig and I would like to know what parts I should go for, seeing as I'm completely ignorant of what to get. I've been told that my current rig is outdated and I should just outright build a brand new PC by myself, but again, I'm unsure on what to get. I'm after a gaming pc as well as one for 3d modelling and design. My maximum budget is around $2000. Here are my specs. (note my PSU is just a shitty generic one so that would need to be replaced too).
You cant beat an i7 2600k, it overclocks to the moon and its completely unnecessary to do so. your ram is a bit eh, you have 11-11-11-28 timings which are the cheapest as far as cost goes, so thats something to look at upgrading. Id go with one or two of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231606 I have a set of them plus another 4 (2x2gb) and couldnt complain. Then the graphics card, get something recent, such as the r9 290x or the gtx 780ti, you cant really drag either of them down that easily. ( so long as nvidia doesnt mess up their drivers, heh) This is up for you to decide. I vouch for AMD, others go for Nvidia Your hard drive is "fine", its a green drive so its gonna be more power efficient at the cost of performance. In the future, aim for black(maximum performance) or Blue(stability and performance) Blues are usually the best tradeoff. These are wicked cheap and pretty fast, i have 2 in raid 0 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236339 Other than that your computer is up to snuff, as said, nothing will ever overtake the 2600k, its just your ram and gpu.
Pretty good at least, but I'm still quite worried about my current PSU, seeing as I've been told time and time again that generic PSUs are generally dangerous to have, but I'm probably just being paranoid. Also, yeah my hard drive is slow as fuck (15 minutes on average to fully boot), so I'll most definately get a new one.

You could go with these upgrades and have a top of the line build. Nothing is wrong with your RAM, there is no difference whatsoever that you will see with the slowest ddr3 vs the fastest. WD Greens are also trash. They're slow and made with cheap parts. Threw in a new case to ensure compatibility with a cooler. With that cooler, you can overclock your 2600k pretty high. You can already overclock the piss out of the 2600k on the stock cooler. i had max temps of about 175F when running at 4.4ghz. Though liquid coolers are nice and could extend the lifetime of your cpu. Once youve installed it (if you get it) you can crank the frequencies up to 4.6ghz without touching the voltage(in my case) Anything higher such as 4.8ghz, which i run, usually requires a PLL overvolt and about .05v more on the cpu. Thats just my situation though, all processors are different and some may require more or less voltage to get the same frequencies.

I just wanted to ask if I needed any additional things when I go about building this rig, like if I need to build it in specific steps or something or if I need some stuff to keep the wires and stuff organized. This would obviously be my first time building it. I have done things like upgrade my gfx card but that's been the extent of it.
Shouldn't really be. The Corsair H100i can be a touch tricky to install, but there are some great guides online.
