CARSON CITY — A bill allowing transgender people to change their names without publishing their new and original names in a newspaper was passed unanimously Wednesday by the Nevada Senate. Senate Bill 110 waives the requirement to publish name changes in a newspaper if the reason is to conform to an individual’s gender identity.
http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/politics-and-government/nevada/transgender-name-change-bill-gets-unanimous-ok-nevada-senate
Huh? Why is it required that you publish your name-change in a newspaper???
Huh? Why is it required that you publish your name-change in a newspaper???
Can't really see a reason aside from forcing Trans individuals from publically outing themselves as trans, which is pretty fucked up.
Huh? Why is it required that you publish your name-change in a newspaper???
Only reason I can think of is to ensure that tracking people down is easy, regardless of the reason
Can't really see a reason aside from forcing Trans individuals from publically outing themselves as trans, which is pretty fucked up.
wouldn't put it past republicans
Didn't know that publishing a name change was a requirement wow. This is a good thing then! Hopefully it'll make it easier for people to transition and change their name when they need to.
Good. What a breach of privacy. :pudge:
Can't really see a reason aside from forcing Trans individuals from publically outing themselves as trans, which is pretty fucked up.
You are aware that the original law had nothing to do with trans people, right? [editline]9th March 2017[/editline] I don't think this bill is very just. I don't see why trans people should get this right to privacy and non-trans people should not. They should've just done away with the requirement for everyone.
Can't really see a reason aside from forcing Trans individuals from publically outing themselves as trans, which is pretty fucked up.
no, you gotta publish your name change in the newpaper pretty much anywhere in the us, and basically its so you cant up and disappear essentially, and its been that way for like 100+ years [editline]9th March 2017[/editline] newpapers also post notices of forclosures, court appearances, failure of court appearances, child support payment notices, etc.
Huh? Why is it required that you publish your name-change in a newspaper???
Same reason local newspapers have obituaries
Huh? Why is it required that you publish your name-change in a newspaper???
iirc it's to prevent people from avoiding debts and stuff like like by changing their name.
wtf what a weird fucking law
wtf what a weird fucking law
It's surely very old, and makese sense in an age where information travels slowly
It's surely very old, and makese sense in an age where information travels slowly
Exactly this. Up until the 90's the internet wasn't exactly a wide spread thing, where as the newspaper landed on just about every doorstep. It made sense back then, but now not so much so.

The right to be forgotten is a thing in several legislations, and I think it's about time the United States starts seriously talking about it.
Whether you support the Transgender movement or not, someone should be able to legally change their name without it being publicly displayed if they don't want to.
Can't really see a reason aside from forcing Trans individuals from publically outing themselves as trans, which is pretty fucked up.
Lol this law had nothing to do with trans people. This law exists so people cant change their names and disapear or get off lists. This dates back to the time when people actually read newspapers, so you can tell how old the law is. I like how everyone tries to villify legislators at every turn, even when theyre making laws in favor of trans individuals.

If you did dumb stuff in the past, it should be there to inspire you to change. You can't undo your past mistakes, but you can learn from them, which the right to be forgotten would eliminate. Why does Trump often post stupid shit on Twitter? Because there's no ownership to what he says. He can just go back and delete what he said if he feels like it was dumb. If there was no delete button, don't you think he'd at least think it over twice before he posts stuff?
Can't really see a reason aside from forcing Trans individuals from publically outing themselves as trans, which is pretty fucked up.
Or, you know, FRAUD? Or debt evasion.

For Trump, there is no delete button.
Or, you know, FRAUD? Or debt evasion.
Your debt goes with you you know. Unless you lose your car, house, job, everything when you get the name change. That'd be pretty funny, "you're sarah dole, not bob dole, you don't work here, get out and we've foreclosed that vacant home," but it's not how it works.
Does anyone really give a shit if some dude named Brad changed his name to Brittney anyway?
No, but it should still be public record that the name change took place.
No, but it should still be public record that the name change took place.
yeah i'd rather not out myself ffs thx
Does anyone really give a shit if some dude named Brad changed his name to Brittney anyway?
If 'half of America' counts as 'anyone', then yeah. 'Anyone' does care.
in the day of digital background checks, posting your name/address in a newspaper is completely irrelevant in preventing fraud
Maybe if we lived in the 1900s still newspapers would be a good method of recording that information but fuck me it's outdated now and just advertises your name change to people who don't need to know about it. Over here, if you submit a Deed Poll to change your name and have it "registered" (you don't actually need to do this to legally change your name, but government records may not reflect the name change otherwise) it gets stored in a database somewhere and people can look it up on gov.uk. It's not published anywhere else. People have to actively go to the site to find your name change, not just happen to come across it whilst reading the local paper.
yeah i'd rather not out myself ffs thx
Still not seeing why this is an issue.
Still not seeing why this is an issue.
Of course you don't... Currently trans people aren't exactly accepted in the US, what with various states trying their hardest to ensure that they can't even use the toilet they'd prefer to use (remind me again why it matters which shit-recipticle room someone takes a shit in?). There are documents cases of transgender people being attacked for merely happening to exist in the same space as a bigot, etc. Having your name change published really sticks a shit huge "HEY I USED TO HAVE A PENIS/ VAGINA" flag on you, perfect for someone who wants to cause harm to a minority! There should be some form of official record of a name change. But it doesn't really have any place in a newspaper.
