A Las Vegas taxi driver who found a package containing $300,000 on the back seat of his cab has been rewarded for returning the money. Gerardo Gamboa received a $1,000 cheque from his employer for his honesty after the money was left behind by a passenger he picked up from a casino.
Video in source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-25517038
Here, if you find something someone genuinely misplaced/lost outside of their property (or rented place like hotel and such) and return it, you have by law guaranteed right to ask for 10% of the value from the original owner. I am not sure if I would claim that in his place, probably depending on what financial situation is he in, but fuck if $30k wouldn't come handy.
I wish I could say I'd have done exactly the same, but who here wouldn't have just... taken some off the top...
So he returned a little under half a million, and gets $1,000 in return? That doesn't seem right? Does it seem right to anyone else?
So he returned a little under half a million, and gets $1,000 in return? That doesn't seem right? And maybe he did, the article does not specify anything about that.
Not to be a buzz-kill, but if he stole it, I'm sure he could be tracked down through timestamps and CCTV, as well as logs with the taxi company.. Which would cause him to lose his job, as well as get arrested with any charges relating to the theft. So, I'd say it cost him less to get $1,000.

Good luck depositing 300k without raising all kinds of flags and alarms anyway.
it's pretty dumb to think the world works this way it's reality, snap into it - he could have easily stolen it, and gotten away with it
Or have returned 30k to the lost-and-found office of his company, kept $270.000.
Only 1000?! In our country you have the right to claim 10%
Good luck depositing 300k without raising all kinds of flags and alarms anyway.
It's cash. He could just pay with it without depositing anything.

At most, the feeling of being a nice person is worth it, instead of some sort of reward.
People who live in las vegas are actually really nice I remember when my family went there we were lost trying to find the monorail station and this woman offered to take us through a locked area to get to the station faster
Good luck depositing 300k without raising all kinds of flags and alarms anyway.
But it's legally gambled money I don't see how that would raise any suspicions if it's clean.

What a boss
Good luck depositing 300k without raising all kinds of flags and alarms anyway.
What? Double what given the fact this happened in Vegas.
What a silly law.
Why is it silly? I think it's brilliant. It encourages people to return the money - this way everyone's happy. You don't have to take advantage of it.
It's cash. He could just pay with it without depositing anything.
Sitting 300k somewhere that isn't a vault of some kind seems pretty damn stupid. And unless he was buying a house or something, he'd need somewhere to store it.
Do you bring your vault with you when you go to casinos?
Nah, those things are heavy man. Obviously the money would have to be out of a vault when moving it from the casino to the vault :v: I was on about leaving it lying around when you aren't spending it. If it's in a bank you get a debit card to access it, if it's not, bring what you need from safe storage.
What a silly law.
Not really, it encourages returning things as you get a guarantee of legit profit if you return it instead of dubious possibility of keeping the entire value. So for instance I would go for that because I wouldn't risk keeping it whole and then getting it taken from me as well as getting fined for keeping something that wasn't mine.
maybe las vegas isn't like that anymore and i watch too much movies but, you probably wouldn't wanna steal from someone who deals with that kind of money in that city
