Retired policeman shoots cinemagoer for using mobile phone
Voices were raised. Popcorn was thrown. And then came something unimaginable -- except maybe in a movie. A gun shot.
Oulson was fatally wounded. His wife was hit, too, through the hand as she raised her hand in front of her husband as the shooter drew a handgun.
Oulson staggered toward the Cummings and fell on them, Charles Cummings said.
The shooter sat down and put the gun in his lap.
Wonder if this was going through his head
Just because there's a special circle in hell devoted to these people, it doesn't mean you get the right to send them there.
How could a sane person go from "this person is an inconsiderate asshole" to "this person deserves to be murdered"?

A retired cop...food for thought
correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't police taught to use violent force only when necessary? that should probably carry on to even when you're retired

Not really, no. American police use way too much force way too often.

American culture in general is pretty fucking violent and as a result it bleeds into law enforcement as well.
He shot him for texting during the previews. I mean, it's one thing to do it for texting during the movie (which would still be violently crazy, obviously), but the previews? Who gives a shit about talking or texting during the previews? Still annoying, yeah, but not nearly to the same degree as during the movie itself.

America's a warlike country, when we don't like something we declare war on it.
You guys blame it on the cop, I blame it on the movie. Just knowing you're going to watch it would drive any sane person to murder
Don't forget, the ex-cop is 71.
This is a bit relevant

Ignoring the fact that America is a very large country filled with more than 300 million people with many of those being immigrants from all over the globe but no, it's just because America's culture is violent because it's one big giant singular entity.

and from Florida. He said he feared for his life when the movie-goer threw a bag of popcorn at him..
pathetic
Uh have you ever been hit by a bag of popcorn? Dude was scared for his life. it's justifiable.

what does florida have to do with this?
Wow that's pretty fucking sad. That daughter is going to grow up without a father all because of an incident blown way out of proportion.
Throwing the food was an assholey thing to do.

It doesn't matter who you are or were. Shooting someone who isn't threatening your life is wrong.

Hey there's this thing called pop culture that the majority of society is involved with on some level at any given time. Take a look at the media that surrounds you and tell me that mainstream society doesn't glorify violence and aggression. Or look at the excessive patriotism and romanticizing of military service.

I'm wondering why he shot him. Surely a former police captain that founded Tampa's SWAT team has a bit more sense than to just up and shoot someone. I wonder if the guy who threw the popcorn also didn't throw some fists
Fun fact: In Florida, it's a felony to hit someone 65 years old or older. And I still remember when it was legal for the police to shoot someone who committed a felony and also ran, if they were armed or unarmed, even in the back as they ran. Eventually being struck down because a cop didn't want to climb over a fence after a kid, and so shot him instead. Justified at the time, though
