The former head of the BBC has gone on record saying that the broadcaster should have tried to keep former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson on in spite of his character flaws, as the embattled presenter brought viewers to the network who otherwise might not have paid attention, according to a recent interview.
Granted, the former British Broadcasting Company exec in question, Mark Thompson, is a bit biased. By his own admission in The Sunday Times Magazine, he considers himself Clarkson's pal.
“Clarkson can be a deeply objectionable individual, and I say that as a friend,” Thompson said, according to an excerpt pulled from the paywall-free online paradise of The Guardian.
Still doesn't excuse him from acting like a prima donna. But yeah, they dun goofed.
Have we finally discovered Captain Obvious's secret identity?

It was John Ob Vious BTW

Too bad you burned every bridge over the river already.

You could always swim.
That's what they're trying to do here

Surely the bricks the BBC dropped in their pants when The Grand Tour was announced would cause them to sink.
The BBC's probably had enough time to get over any denial that the numbers they were getting for post-trio-of-knobs Top Gear were temporary, and now they're finding out just what they did after all. If not, I wonder how long it'll take them to really clue in.
Good job, ya fucks.
Well yeah. Clarkson is an offensive, unrelenting asshole but ultimately, isn't that a kinda why we all loved him in the first place?

to be honest they (the bbc) caused like most of those controversies surrounding the show, if they had just had a little more integrity and not say force the presenters to appologise to mexico for a small joke or apologize to all asians for an offhand comment or apologize to everybody for offending old ladies ect ect then maybe he wouldnt have blown up but after a string of tabloidy scandals who can really blame him for getting fed up
Well BBC pretty much already made their choice to pander endlessly to every personally offended moron with access to internet comment-sections.
You cant do that and also keep your casually offensive show host.
I guess what it is; is that BBC are now realizing that the people who want everyone to apologize for everything are not the people who actually watches their shit.

The comment in question.

Frankly i found it fucking hilarious.
Wasn't the real reason he got fired because he assaulted a coworker?
Wasn't the real reason he got fired because he assaulted a coworker?
Yes, he apparently punched a producer and called him a 'lazy irish cunt'

This incident was the first and last time I've ever heard the word "slope" mean something offensive. Is it just British / European thing?

Its a British thing i'm pretty sure. I can't remember where i first heard the term 'Slope' meaning a slanty-eye-guy. But i got the joke immediately when i saw this special, and i remember inhaling whatever i was drinking at the time.

Just use a boat or fly.

I know for sure it's been used in some Vietnam war movies or something.

...and, much as I'm looking forward to The Grand Tour, this is why the former BBC head is incorrect. As far as 'last chances' go, assaulting a producer over food is a spectacular way to blow it.
Ha BBC can suck one, realised how much money they're now loosing on Top Gear and how it will never have the high ratings again.

The way so many people bash the BBC for doing the right thing reminds me a lot of all the people that make excuses for university sports-team rapists in the US. Being a fan of someone's work is no reason to excuse their violent behavior.

No but really now, could've done a lot of other things besides firing him.

Seriously if it was any of his usual supposedly racist or offensive stunts I'd agree 100%.
But if he really did punch and insult a producer what other thing could have been done but to fire him? BBC is a massive corporation, can they really turn a blind eye into such a well publicised incident of assault, by a top presenter?
If they didn't fire him what kind of message would that send? If you are bringing enough money in you can commit offenses we would fire other people for? What would other people who have to work with him in the same place think afterwards? I can get punched by someone who is the star of the channel?
I'm willing to bet anything there are a lot of high level executives who just thought "Fuck me, there goes our cash cow" the moment they heard of the incident but there really was nothing more to do.
It was far from his first offence too, of course. They had made quite a big deal out of keeping Clarkson in the face of multiple issues and it was widely publicised that he was on the brink.
The 'fracas' had to be the end of the line. If I were to punch one of my colleagues today, I would be sacked - no matter whether I'm good at my job or whether it was in my nature.

Could've suspended him without pay, I'm sure everyone can relate to the pain that would've caused.
I don't know, but as it seemed fully settled between the two that were a part of this..
.. had it been i.e. a restaurant or a factory, the boss would've just wiggled their index finger and shrugged it off.
Stop pretending hes some abusive violent individual who was a danger to the workplace.
Are there any other jobs where punching co-workers doesn't/shouldn't get you automatically fired?

If it was that serious it'd have gone to court.

They settled for £125k. This thing didn't end the next day when Clarkson tried to apologise.

How has Clarkson conned everyone into thinking he's a funny/good person??
He is one of the biggest cunts working in TV today, he's an elitist, racist, cunt who really shouldn't have a job despite the 'sick bants m8'
Violent behavior by an old man who was slightly drunk and punched a dude barely scarping him and on top of that apologized and both parties agreed it was nothing serious or personal literally the day after.
Stop pretending hes some abusive violent individual who was a danger to the workplace. The only reason he was fired was because of the imaginery three strikes the BBC imposed to appease idiots who get their information from Daily Mail.
And no, nobody is putting him on the pedestal just because hes their favorite celeberity. If the same thing happened to Justin Beiber or whoever else I dont particulary care about I would have advocated the exact same thing.
Whole incident got blown way the fuck out of proportion.
People made it sound like he screamed POWER and clocked the guy through a motorhome.
The bbc dropped the hammer as an example, mostly because of people always complaining aswell.

Has the world gone insane? He punched a man in the face. He punched one of the producers in the face over food. In what world don't you sack him?
The BBC firing him is probably a good thing anyway, they get their own show with complete creative freedom with a provider that doesn't bow to shitty tabloid news.
