Skateboarding becomes more popular and widespread for each day that passes, in most modern countries skateboarders can be quite common, compared to 30 years ago when skateboarding was born.
Why skate?
Most people skate because it's just plain fun. It's thrilling to finally nail that one trick you've been practicing on or just relaxing to roll about a summer evening. Skateboarding also in most cases become more fun if you have a couple of friends who also skateboard with you.
What types of skateboarding styles are there?
In general there's two types of skateboarding; Street is when you skate on curbs, ledges or out of stairs and such. Basicly obstacles you can find on the street, hence the name. The other 'style' is Vert (sometimes known as transition), which is more based on riding in skateboarding bowls and ramps.
Are there any rules in skateboarding
That's the beauty of skateboarding, you're free to skate how you like. Want to stand on your hands on your board? Sure! Want to air guitar while riding in a ramp? Sure! You're free to do as you like.
What is exactly a skateboard?
Skateboards are made up of 4 different parts, the deck, trucks, wheels and bearings.
The deck

is the main part of a skateboard, on this you mount everything else. The backside of the board is usually painted with a motive. Also, street riders tend to prefer thinner boards, while vert riders like broader boards more. Your foot size should also be taken in account when choosing your board.
The trucks

Are what enables you to turn and basicly ride around. The pegs on each side is where your wheels go. Your trucks should be as wide as your board is.
The wheels

Are usually made of urethane and plastic. There are a variety of sizes on skateboarding wheels, vert riders usually use larger wheels, and street riders use smaller ones.
And the bearings

The bearings go into your wheels. Depending on what type of bearings you have, you will either roll faster or slower. You should look for bearings made only for skateboarding. They will work the best.
I want to learn the basics, where do I start?
Try watching this video if you're completely new to skateboarding, it covers the most basic stuff:

From there, you probably want to learn the ollie, which is basicly a jump with the skateboard:

If you want to learn anything more, a quick search on youtube should provide you with whatever you want.
That's basicly it, let me know if I've forgot to mention anything important. I'll try to fix it ASAP.
I used to skateboard... but then I fell.
I used to skateboard... but then I fell.
Yeah same, I fell off a half-pipe and then decided skating wasn't for me.
Meh most skateboardesr I see are wannabe emo kids with a boad that they sandpapered to look like it's been grinding, who just sit around skateparks and get in my way.
I crush them under my mighty 24" doubletrack.
[editline]06:44PM[/editline]
I absolutely respect those who know what they're doing, cause skateboarding is fucking hard thing to do correctly and not look like a total pussy.
I'm quite fine playing Tony Hawk's Underground, thank you very much.
ITT: Sissies.
I broke my neck but im still skating,
[sp]After the neck had healed of course[/sp]

IMO the "skate." games are the best.
Longboarding 4 lyfe.
I cross step all over dat shit.
Got 2 banana boards. love em. also skate regular decks. just got my inward heels down :smug:
Also apparently if you get, say Abec 7 bearings, then drop your board on it's wheels from chest height the bearings will now be less than Abec 0. So basically Abec is bullshit, just get some decent ones that aren't too expensive. Abec rating is how perfectly round the bearings are by the way.
white kids with free healthcare trying to hurt themselves for no reason on the 2nd most impractical form of transportation ever, just below the unicycle and just above the tea tray.
I use to Skate.
But then I found this thing called "Computer games".
i started skating some months ago
i still suck
I prefer Powerbocking.
i wanna learn to skateboard, although theres quite a few things stopping me.
1. my area isn't exactly 'friendly'
2. most of the people in my area will classify me as a emo & beat the shit out of me
3. i have no one to skate with :saddowns:

Are you 12?
I would but:
A. Everyone in my skatepark hates me due to a series of fights etc...
B. Can't skate or anything for shit anyway
C. Errrrr... Look back at A

Just don't even start trying, from what I've seen most skateboarders are either emo or douchebags.
I have friends that skate, and they are annoying as shit.
"Hey man, I don't skate so do you mind just walking or slowing down a bit?"
"Nah, I'm good." *Starts going 40 Mph downhill*
"Come on man, hurry up!"
"Fuck you, Josh"
I prefer snowboarding, I've done both, but, I think in general snowboarding is more of a rush and skateboarding is more of a social thing.

In my local area it's the opposite, we have a outdoor concrete skatepark where bicycles aren't allowed, yet there's always some BMX riders and what not that occupy about a third of the whole area, and that's only like 4-6 people.
Also, only respecting someone because they are good at something is a dick move, unless you mean that you just dislike the "posers".
I hate both skateboarders and BMXers. Skateboarders = Emo. BMXers = Chavs.
Deal with it.
I used to skateboard back when the Tony Hawks games were reeeally popular (like, the THPS3 days) but I just grew out/got bored of it.
I see less and less people skateboard every day. This truly is the fall of skateboarding.
compared to 30 years ago when skateboarding was born.
Skateboarding is over 50 years old.
Most people skate because it's just plain fun.
It's not.
Street is when you skate on curbs, ledges or out of stairs and such. Basicly obstacles you can find on the street, hence the name.
Good way to get hit by a car.

I will skateboard by not skateboarding.
Skateboards are made up of 4 different parts, the deck, trucks, wheels and bearings.
They're also made of boring.
The trucks
I think you mean the lorries.
I want to learn the basics, where do I start?
Best place to start is nowhere.
ollie
Who?
If you want to learn anything more
I don't.

*cough douchebag cough*
I play guitar instead, much safer than skateboarding, nothing can hurt you. Except that time one of my strings snapped, flew up, and scared my face :saddowns:
The bearings go into your wheels. Depending on what type of bearings you have, you will either roll faster or slower. Abec 3 is the 'slowest' and Abec 10 is the fastest. There's also 5 and 7, which are alternatives to 3 and 10.
Not true, just a common misconception. ABEC actually has nothing to do with speed.
people who can do it, love it
those who can't, hate it
it's a good system.
do BACKFLIP YO.
totaly radical dude lets do a kick flip 720 and be xtreme
