VICTORVILLE • A 19-year-old man was airlifted with serious injuries after he was stuck by a train in Old Town on Tuesday afternoon, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Victorville station officials. The Victorville man was crossing the tracks underneath the Highway 18 bridge along with several other people when a passing train hooked him and tossed him several feet, Deputy John O’Connell said. According to witnesses, the man was struck on the north side of the train tracks behind the businesses located off D Street near Hesperia Road. People at the scene said the train continued traveling and did not stop or brake. “I doubt the train (conductor) even knew what happened,” O’Connell said. “We’re talking about several tons versus someone weighing about 120 to 130 pounds.” The man sustained serious head injuries in the incident. He was transported by ambulance to nearby Victor Valley Community Hospital, where he was later airlifted by Mercy Air to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, authorities said. Authorities remind residents it’s a misdemeanor to cross or walk along the train tracks.
http://www.vvdailypress.com/news/victorville-29400-hit-old.html
VICTORVILLE • Only a few days before Demetri Uribe was to start his senior year of high school, the 19-year-old died from injuries he received after he was struck by a passing train. Uribe and a group of friends were crossing the railroad tracks behind D Street just under the Highway 18 bridge into Apple Valley on Tuesday afternoon when a train hooked Uribe and severely injured him, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Victorville station officials. There were reports he sustained major head trauma. Rescue personnel transported the Silverado High School student to Victor Valley Community Hospital. Uribe was then airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, according to Coroner’s office officials. Friends of the man were in shock and expressed their concern Wednesday morning. One friend described him as a talented artist who was known for always carrying around his ethnic-styled messenger bags. Deputies warn people to stay away from train tracks at all times and remind residents that walking on railroad tracks is a misdemeanor.
http://www.vvdailypress.com/news/train-29426-victorville-killed.html I think I went to school with the kid, didn't know him at all, didn't even know he existed. But it is pretty damn sad. Also, brutal.
As bad as it is, If any train is coming anyone should just wait for it to go by rather than try and beat it.
I never understood how you could get hit by a train. It's not like they can steer away from the tracks or anything.
I never understood how you could get hit by a train. It's not like they can steer away from the tracks or anything.
Well, my mom's aunt's mother died when she crossed the tracks before the train but it caught her bag and flung her against a lamppost.
Oh wow. This happened like five minutes down the road from me.
i read "serious injuries" and thought "oh, at least hes alive." read the 2nd part, depressed me.
I use to live in Helendale, pretty close to Victorville. Silverado High is a shitty school though, it was initially planned to be a prison but the idea was dropped halfway through and they turned it into a high school. The place is unsafe as shit, constant rioting, assaults, and other gang activity. Police are always having to spray students and use beanbag shotguns. Luckily, I moved away before I had to attend, my oldest sister went there though and even witnessed one of her friends get stabbed in the school parking lot by some gangbangers angry because he outed them for cheating or something.
