• In the market for a new iPod, got some questions

Alright, guys, my old 5th gen classic 30GB video seems to be on its way out, but it's been great for the time I've had it. Now, I'm in the market for a new portable media player, and I figure I'll stick with the Apple as they do well in this category. Now it's been a while since I've even looked at anything like this, so I'm out of the loop. I don't really need it to watch videos or anything, but I will probably be getting into apps, as some of them seem just plain cool. That's where I got some questions. -Does it require iTunes to get apps onto the iPod? I've never been fond of iTunes, but if it's a necessity, then so be it. -Can the newest (3rd gen) touches be jailbroken? If so, how easy is it, and how do you get programs onto the jailbroken iPod? -What is the average size for most apps? I ask this because I'm planning on picking up the 32GB touch, but I have about 17GB of music and I don't want to run out of room in a couple months because I was cheap. Those are the biggest 3 I think I have, but if I have more, I'll ask here.
-Does it require iTunes to get apps onto the iPod? I've never been fond of iTunes, but if it's a necessity, then so be it.
Yeah, unfortunately. I don't really have a problem with iTunes, so I don't know why people always whine about it.
-Can the newest (3rd gen) touches be jailbroken? If so, how easy is it, and how do you get programs onto the jailbroken iPod?
There's a new exploit by the chronic dev team that they kept their mouth shut until after the touch G3 came out. It's a tethered JB right now, which means you need to plug your iPod into your computer to boot it.
-What is the average size for most apps? The largest is somewhere around 300MB, and that only applies to the big games like Need for Speed or Gang$tar. For the most part, expect somewhere in the realms between 10-20MB.
I mainly have a negative image of iTunes because it caused some problems that could have been easily preventable (on both ends) in the past. And for the exploit, can you explain a bit more? I'm not certain, but does booting into it still hold the ability to play my music library and legit apps?
You don't need iTunes to get apps on the iPod Touch. You need an iTunes account, though, and iTunes is obviously required to get music on there. But not apps. You can, if you want, load apps through iTunes, but the easiest way is to use the App Store built in on the iPod Touch which only requires your iTunes account information.
Well, I use foobar for adding music, so I guess the only thing I'd need iTunes for is the account, then.
Yeah, that'd be fine.
you can import free music into itunes jb'ing is easy you can still get everything as normal too

No, you don't need iTunes to get apps onto the iPod. :downs: [editline]04:26AM[/editline]
-Does it require iTunes to get apps onto the iPod?
-Can the newest (3rd gen) touches be jailbroken? If so, how easy is it, and how do you get programs onto the jailbroken iPod?
Not fully, only tethered (meaning you have to connect it to your PC to boot if you restart it.)
-What is the average size for most apps?
Most applications are 1MB to 25MB. If you go for 3D applications, most hover around 50MB or whatever, with the exception of a few that are 200MB's and whatnot.
Or Navigon USA and Canda - 1.2GB Haha.
Why are iPod/iPhone apps so huge, most Android apps are less than 1MB and do the same thing iPod apps do.
More people use the iPhone\Touch, and more people are familiar with it.
More people use the iPhone\Touch, and more people are familiar with it.
That doesn't really answer my question
app store has more apps. also, games.
Why are iPod/iPhone apps so huge, most Android apps are less than 1MB and do the same thing iPod apps do.
Because most Android apps suck shit.
That doesn't really answer my question
Sorry, when you said huge I thought you meant why are they so popular.
What? No, you don't need iTunes to get apps onto the iPod. :downs:
Oh, you can use the App Store straight from the iPod. That's revolutionary. There's always a chance the OP has no active wireless connection, and do you know where you get apps from? The iTunes App Store.
Because most Android apps suck shit.
Not really, most apps do the job quite decently, they look nice, and they're fast.

Don't automatically assume everyone's still living in the stone age.

I never said the OP didn't have wireless, and if someone doesn't have wireless it doesn't automatically make them live in the stone age; there are other ways to get apps. Just do everyone a favor and quit while you're ahead. You don't know everything, and making incorrect assumptions only makes you look like an idiot.

And if somebody doesn't have wireless, they're not keeping up with the times. Setting up a wireless network is one of the easiest things ever, I'd rather go out and buy a router than use iTunes to get applications. Using iTunes to get apps is horribly inconvenient. Also, nice finishing rage.
Wireless is pretty sucky anyway, wired is much better for a computer, and why'd you set up a wireless just for your phone when you have a computer handy?
Wireless is pretty sucky anyway, wired is much better for a computer, and why'd you set up a wireless just for your phone when you have a computer handy?
Wireless is stable and fast provided you buy a router from a trusted company. And if you have a laptop or an iPod touch, being able to access internet from anywhere in your house is great convenience.
Wireless is pretty sucky anyway, wired is much better for a computer, and why'd you set up a wireless just for your phone when you have a computer handy?
I haven't got a single device that's using wired, everything is wireless, and it's working great. It's fast and stable.
Alright guys, just bought a 3rd gen 32GB model, and am looking for a case. I'm pretty certain I'll be getting the RebelTouch (Skeleton if it matters), but I want to confirm that the case for the 2nd gen will work with the 3rd gen as well.
Don't get any iPod, go for a Zune HD, Creative X-Fi, or wait for the Creative Zii.
Don't get any iPod, go for a Zune HD, Creative X-Fi, or wait for the Creative Zii.
First of all, good job reading. Second, the iPod is better than those three combined.
Don't get any iPod, go for a Zune HD, Creative X-Fi, or wait for the Creative Zii.
Welcome to the Apple subforum. The door to exit is the other way.
Can anyone who owns a RebelTouch answer my question? Edit: Nevermind, researched it myself (smart, eh?) and found out the dimensions are the same for the 2nd gen and 3rd gen , so I ordered a RebelTouch.
