• Should I buy the Dell U2711 for 746.90 CAD?

Buy May 13th, I will have about 1000 dollars saved up, There is a Canadian Website called Best Direct which sells the Dell U2711 for about 746 dollars. Now I've read countless reviews, but most of the people who bought it aren't working minimum wage like I am, nor are they students. In my income of about 500-600 dollars a month, would this Monitor be worth the buy? [editline]14th March 2011[/editline] Right now I'm using the Samsung SyncMaster T220 1680x1050. PC's Specs are AMD 955 at 3.8ghz GTX 460 cyclone 1gb volt modded. 4gb OCZ Gold series 1333mhz ram. MSI AM3 SLI capable mobo. BFG 550w PSU.
Wait a second. Your incoming is 500-600 a month and you're going to buy a 750$ monitor? That's kind of crazy bro. You're better off getting the U2311H or U2211H from Dell's website when it goes on sale (it routinely does) for about $200. The U2711 has noticeable input lag and (imo) if you're going to be using it for gaming. That said, what are your primary uses? What are you in school for? Do you need a 27" IPS monitor? (/U2211H owner, student, canadian :derp:)
The U2711 has noticeable input lag and (imo) if you're going to be using it for gaming.
I have one and it doesn't have noticeable input lag, even for gaming. It's a great monitor and the colours are awesome on it. As to if you should spend all your money on it, depends upon if you need the money for other things. (I.e. Is it all disposable income ?) Edit: Hang on no, I have the 2709W - They look the same, sorry. In which case, I recommend the 2709W as you can probably pick them up for a lot less than they were. (It's about £200 less over here.) Looking at the U**11 series though, I want a U3011. :D

no, its 2560x1600 I believe
The 2709W is 'only' 1920x1200 - It's a very nice resolution for a 27" monitor.
I'm intrigued. [editline]14th March 2011[/editline] How does it's VA panel compare to IPS and TN? [editline]14th March 2011[/editline] Apperantly the A00 version of the monitor has god awful input lag, so If I were to get one it would have to be. A.Much cheaper than 750. B. A01 or A02.
VA panels have even better contrast ratios and color reproduction compared to IPS, let alone TN panels, but have the worst response times. The ghosting on VA panels is quite noticeable in gaming, even with compensation. IPS is probably the way to go, as you won't get noticeable ghosting but will still have better color and contrast ratios.
I was under the impression IPS monitors were designed solely for artist or graphic designers due to it's color reproduction but had terrible response times. If you are aiming to game, then LED backlit monitors are probably better for that purpose as they have lightning quick response times.

IPS monitors now have low enough input delays to where you really shouldn't be able to notice anything, while looking amazing.

IPS monitors now have low enough input delays to where you really shouldn't be able to notice anything, while looking amazing.
That really depends on the display...side by side I saw that the motion blur/ghosting on my U2311h was nearly the same as my 20" TN panel (only slightly worse, could have just been the huge difference in image quality and vibrance that made it more apparent) but on some of the larger displays (ie most 27" and 30" including Dell's) the input lag is horrendous for gaming. Something like the U2311 is amazing because it gives you TN panel input lag with gorgeous colors (you actually won't recognize TF2) but as you move up to those larger displays you'll see that the technology just isn't there yet. http://www.anandtech.com/show/2922/4 You can always try it and return it if it's too much depending on where you order it from.

I have the U2311H and what is input lag
the input lag on the U2711 really isn't that bad compared to the U2311 and I'm taking it you haven't been able to compare between the two so
It's 8ms vs 30ms and while whether you notice this difference is completely subjective, I think this pretty much sums it up: http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/monitor/2010/dell-u2711/dell-u2711-responsetime.jpg iirc prad said it was noticeable and shouldn't be overlooked but that it was bearable for most users and this is consistent with what I've read. Saying you won't notice input lag on a new age 27" IPS is like saying 120Hz isn't any different than 60

Soooo... I shouldn't get this screen, and 30ms is not bad at ALL. I have a 15 inch LCD from 2002, and it has a 28ms average, and it looks just as smooth as my 12ms, very hard to compare.
30ms is pushing it IMO, but if you've played on a 28ms all this time, shouldn't be a huge issue for you.
30ms is pushing it IMO, but if you've played on a 28ms all this time, shouldn't be a huge issue for you.
i've played on 12ms, the 15 is my second screen. I don't care about it's input lag I care about the entire screen being worth the cost or not, and in my financial situation.
-snip- read OP as 600 a week
-snip- read OP as 600 a week
That would be great.
Don't bother with a 30ms screen. I have a TV that has a 30ms delay and it's torture. It's like that mouse acceleration crap on Macs except you can't turn it off.

Although I thought the 2709W is an IPS.
anything above 2ms response sucks
anything above 2ms response sucks
people who work in marketing must absolutely love you
My Dell E207WFP is still going strong after 3 years of use.
anything above 2ms response sucks
I'm not noticing any difference switching from 8 ms to 2 ms.
Mine has a response time of 6ms according to Dell's site and I haven't noticed any ghosting at all ? Although I thought the 2709W is an IPS.
From what I've learned over the past year or so of Monitor researching. The values listed on the spec sheet of the monitor is not the real value. You'd need to get real world testing from review sites to get some more accurate values. my monitor is a TN 3ms panel. But I used to own a 8ms M-PVA panel. My new panel seems to ghost more. So It's more of a cheat that some manufacturers use to get better numbers. That's what I understand.
Thanks for your help guys! I'm thinking about just not getting a new monitor at all, because my T220 is serving me well. Rather put the money aside for computer upgrades or a new phone.
