The Russian Federal Space Agency Roscosmos is positive about a recently advanced idea to send Olympic Flame to the International Space Station (ISS) and back to Earth as a part of the preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics, Stats Secretary Vitaly Davydov said on Wednesday. "Frankly speaking, we have not studied possibilities to deliver Olympic Flame to the ISS. This is a very specific issue; naked flame onboard the space station is prohibited for safety reasons," Davydov said, adding that if elaborated and technically sound project of delivery was worked out, Roscosmos would consider it. Earlier, several media reported that one of the Russian firms related to the space industry, was thrashing out a project of delivery. "The idea itself is very interesting and, in theory, could be implemented. But ways of its realization must be studied painstakingly," Davydov said. In order such operation is held all of the ISS partners should give permission.
Source: http://www.space-travel.com/reports/2012_Olympic_Flame_May_Be_Sent_To_ISS_999.html Awesome.
An interesting proposal, it'd be symbolic of truly going the distance with the torch.
While this sounds cool, putting the torch on the ISS seems like a very bad idea. Even if they do use something to contain it.

It will never happen.
It will never happen.
You are forgetting this is Russians in space.
an open flame in a pure oxygen environment, yea thats a pretty good idea.
an open flame in a pure oxygen environment, yea thats a pretty good idea.
It's the Russians. In space.
Hell yeah, lets waste some money motherfuckers
Well, it looks like we're gonna have fireworks for the 2014 olympics.
Those darn Russians...
an open flame in a pure oxygen environment, yea thats a pretty good idea.
I hope it's not pure oxygen or those astronauts will be too busy being high to get anything done. I actually think this is a pretty good idea. I like the symbolism, and some completely new designs and technology is going to need to be developed to make it possible, and that kind of research and development spurring initiative is always a good thing.
If it raises awareness of spaceflight, I'm all for it. As long as they find a technically sound way to do it.
an open flame in a pure oxygen environment, yea thats a pretty good idea.
Pure oxygen? Christ almighty you'd catch on fire
I hope it's not pure oxygen or they will be too busy being high to get anything done.
actually they'll be too busy being dead, since pure oxygen is lethal I think the more pressing issue is how fire behaves in zero-G

They should ignite the rocket engine using the Olympic torch.
sure might be russians in space, but the ISS is international
Well, the US will kinda owe the Russians since, you know, we don't have our own shuttles anymore.
The ISS is like Russia's adopted baby, the US is the negligent parent for discontinuing the space shuttle.
Waste of money.
That would be so cool, especially since one it gets into space and outside of gravity, it will become a blue orb of fire.
Waste of money.
Inspiration and hope is never a waste of money
Waste of money.
Yes, because a global sporting event where you create a new town and several massive complexes every two years is so economical to begin with.
The ISS is like Russia's adopted baby, the US is the negligent parent for discontinuing the space shuttle.
"We're going to go to the moon!" ... "Eh, that's enough of that."
sure might be russians in space, but the ISS is international
The Olympics are a world event
It's the Russians. In space.
So pure oxygen, and 90% vodka, yeah, really a safe area for flames.
The ISS' atmosphere is 20% Oxygen and 80% Nitrogen. It's a highly stable replica of our atmosphere down here in this dusty shithole. That is, it won't torch the station.
So pure oxygen, and 90% vodka, yeah, really a safe area for flames.
Drunk out of our asses and inhaling nothing but pure oxygen. Decide it's a good idea for a space torch. Such is life as a Russian cosmonaut.

Obviously having your space station burning down (up? which way would an object burn in space) isn't a good thing but it doesn't seem to be that bad.
