Whenever you use an inter-connected network, especially when it is a desirable target, chances are something will happen eventually.
research carried out for the study showed that the UK's nuclear plants and associated infrastructure were not well protected or prepared because the industry had converted to digital systems relatively recently. This increasing digitisation and growing reliance on commercial software is only increasing the risks the nuclear industry faces.
We may understand it and the station engineers might also understand it, but the suits will never grasp the concept that such powerful technology should only be controlled by closed and proprietary systems designed and sponsored at the government level. It might cost hundreds of millions more to develop and be completely incompatible from country to country but even with modern hardware it is still Security through Obscurity.
