Big Brother is joining the battle of the bulge.
A group of Long Island students will soon be wearing controversial electronic monitors that allow school officials to track their physical activity around the clock.
The athletics chair for the Bay Shore schools ordered 10 Polar Active monitors, at $90 a pop, for use starting this spring. The wristwatchlike devices count heartbeats, detect motion and even track students’ sleeping habits in a bid to combat obesity.[/release]

What's the point of the motion detector function?
If it's supposed to be an estimate on how active the wearer is then you can cheat it by moving just that one arm a lot, and if you have trouble keeping track of the fat kids then god help you with the skinny ones.

You can't force anyone to wear one of those. Unless it locks around your wrist and sets an alarm when tampered with, I don't see why you can't say "Fuck this" and not wear it.
