The handwriting was all pretty curves. "You are in an Android app, Max." The truth was a burning green crack through my brain. Finger smudges hanging in the air, out of the corner of my eye. Endless repetition of the act of shooting, time slowing to show off my moves. The empty feeling of force closing. I was in an Android app. Funny as hell, it was the most [del]horrible[/del] wonderful thing I can think of. - Minecraft Pocket Edition A partial port of Minecraft to Android. Now you must bring about the end of human history by evolving a deadly, global Plague whilst adapting against everything humanity can do to defend itself. A clone of the flash game "Pandemic". ------------------------------------------------------------ Emulators are a bit of a tricky business. The first thing you should do is get a Bluetooth controller. Yes, they are playable with touch screen controls, but if you play often you will not regret this purchase. It's a simple fact that none of these games were designed for touch screen devices. Toshiba Thrive and Motorola XOOM owners can use most USB controllers (Note: If you have a Logitech controller, set it to Xinput rather that DirectInput). Most emulators should allow you to map controls, which is usually needed for controllers. Suggested controllers for phone users: - Gametel Bluetooth Controller An attachable and detachable controller with a faux joystick, four directional buttons, two trigger/bumper buttons, and a start and select button. This is more or less as good as a bluetooth controller is going to get, and being detachable means it's a good buy for tablet users as well. However, it is somewhat expensive [del]and seemingly only available in Europe[/del]. Now available on Amazon.com for those in the United States. Link - The iControlPad A pricey controller with two joysticks, a dpad, four directional buttons, a start and stop button, and two trigger/bumper buttons. Meaning it'll have all the buttons you'll ever need. However, keep in mind, most emulated games won't make use of all these buttons. On top of that, it is quite bulky and may be uncomfortable to carry in your pocket. Link - The Game Gripper At a small sleek size, and a very affordable price, the Game Gripper will probably appeal the most to emulator gamers. However, they are designed to fit specific phones, so you may have to modify it a tad bit if you own a phone that isn't listed on their site. With a dpad, six front buttons, and four directional buttons, it should have enough buttons for most emulated games. At only about $15, you really can't go wrong with it. Link Suggested controllers for tablet users: If you're a tablet user, I'm assuming you'll be willing to lug around a controller along with your tablet. Note that all of these should work with phones as well. Unfortunately, most emulator's controls are designed for phones, so a controller is needed even more for tablets. - PS3 controllers Six-axis controllers such as this one or this one, or even a normal PS3 controller can be used via Android with this app. This is the most appealing choice since PS3 controllers are not hard to find for free, or third party ones can be bought for cheap, and have all the buttons you will ever need. Make sure to use the compatibility checker first before you do anything else. Side note, from the sixaxis app, go to Preferences -> Gamepad Settings -> and click enable Gamepad if your controller is not working. In addition, make sure it is selected as an input method. - Phonejoy If you're an unlucky fellow who's device is not compatible with the six-axis app, you're not totally out of luck. The phonejoy is a six-axis controller designed specifically for Android and iOS. However, at $50, it's as expensive as the Gametel or iControlPad. Link - Wii (Classic) Controller Using one of these two apps, you can connect your WiiMote or Wii Classic Controller to your Android! - Generic Bluetooth Controller from Gamestop A controller styled like the original Xbox controllers for $40. Not much to say about it, other than it's bulky but has all the buttons you need. Link - Your Android Phone If you own both a smart phone and a tablet, and don't have money to spare, then this is for you. Install this app on both your tablet and your phone, and the phone becomes the controller. The free version has an SNES style button layout. The paid version (only $1) allows you to create your own layouts. If you're going to use it for OoT or Majora's Mask, try out this layout I've made designed specifically for those games. Extract the zip to /btcontroller/. An important note about getting controllers to work: You must adjust the settings to get them to work. They will not work as soon as you download the app. For example for sixaxis, you must go to Preferences -> Gamepad Settings -> and click enable Gamepad. In addition, make sure it is selected as an input method. And then in the emulator options, you must enable gamepads/controllers/whatever it says. Do not give up easily. ------------------------------------------------------------ A quick note here, the legality of Emulators is not really set in stone. Some companies would prefer you didn't, some have not made any comments on it at all. That said, correct me if I'm wrong, I have not heard of anyone being sued or charged for using emulators. ROMs have the same situation, yet are even-less-seemingly-legal than the emulators. If you own a physical copy of the games, there are devices you can buy to make your own ROMs from. Notable Emulators: - DroidEmu A jack of all trades emulator for SNES, NES, GameBoy Advanced, GameBoy/Color, SEGA GameGear, and SEGA Genesis games. - NESoid NES emulator with mappable controls. However, you cannot disable texture filtering, so it may look blurry at some screen sizes. - Snes9x EX SNES emulator with built in WiiMote support and the ability to disable texture filtering, which SNESoid lacks. - SNESoid SNES emulator with mappable controls. Not as configurable as Snes9x EX. - GameBoid GameBoy Advanced Emulator with mappable controls. - MD.emu Emulator for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive/CD and Master System/Mark III consoles. - GENSoid Sega Genesis emulator with mappable controls. - PSX 4 Droid PSX emulator with full features. Note there is a paid PSX emulator on the Play store and the Xperia Play comes with an official one, so the legality of this one specifically is unknown. PSX Emulators appear to run fine on any system with a 1Ghz processor and 512mb of RAM, or possibly even less. Note that you need the PSX BIOS. - FPse A paid Emulator for PSX that is more stable and optimized than PSX 4 Droid. - Mupen64Plus AE A beta port of Mupen64Plus similar to N64oid, but supports configurable and changeable plugins, and hardware rendering! And unlike N64oid, it's free! If a game is not playing, go to Settings -> Video -> Change Plug-in -> Pick "gles2rice". This is a port of the Rice video plugin to Android. It seems to have trouble with some games, like Ocarina of Time, but makes other games like Conker's Bad Fur Day more playable. With the default plugin, go to configure settings and enable "Stretch screen" if you want to play in widescreen. The Rice plugin does this by default. If you have an Xperia Play, go to Settings, and enable "Xperia Play Optimized". For those of you using the Sixaxis app, it works the same way that N64oid does, but you must map the analog stick. Because the analog stick and dpad on a PS3 controller send the same signal, consider mapping the dpad to actual hardware controls like the volume button, or to something else that won't interfere with the analog stick. Take a look at this thread made by the developer for performance tips. - N64oid A Mupen64Plus port that can emulate all the features of the N64, even the rumble pak and multiplayer. However, it is quite resource heavy to run. A dual core 1Ghz device with 512mb of RAM (such as the Kindle Fire) or better is suggested. If it is running slowly, disable fog effects, and play with the max frame skips setting until it smooths out. Update: Mupen64Plus AE is back and free! N64oid is no longer suggested. However, it still does run better in some cases than Mupen64Plus AE, so if you have already purchased N64oid, go ahead and continue using it. To move your saves, go to the SD Card (mnt/sdcard if you aren't there already) with a file manager and locate .n64oid/saves. Copy all files, and paste them in Android/data/trev.android.mupen64plusae/data/save. - NDS Emulator A Nintendo DS Emulator. Keep in mind, this emu is nothing more than an experiment. Likely only 2D games will run smoothly on devices such as the Kindle Fire or Thrive, and only a few 3D games may work well with devices such as the Nexus 7 or Galaxy S3. - DSoid Another Nintendo DS Emulator. Runs some games smoothly, yet still won't run most games at a playable rate. A controller is highly suggested. - aDosBox A DosBox port for Android to emulate old PC games. Quite resource heavy to run, but a lot of games should work well on newer devices. - PPSSPP A PSP emulator for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. Works well with older/2D PSP games. A controller is highly suggested. There are emulators for pretty much any gaming platform PSX and older. Just Google around, Slide Me seems to have most of them. As for a PSP emulator, don't get your hopes up. Games for the original PSP might be possible, but since the latest PSP has hardware similar to the latest Android phones, emulating it probably isn't going to happen. ------------------------------------------------------------ F.A.Q. (Most of these are answered above.) Q. Is Emulating games legal? A. There is no definite answer to this. Some companies have a stance against it, some don't seem to care. The question of legality comes from the fact they're impossible to buy from the developers and are thus "Abandonware". Q. Where can I get ROMs? A. At the risk of being banned for Warez (again, the legality isn't set in stone), all I can tell you is to Google it. If you own a physical copy of the game, there are devices out there to make your own ROMs. Q. What kind of phone should I get for emulating games? A. For older platforms like the SNES, any device with a 600Mhz single core processor and 256mb of RAM should do fine. The Xperia Play had a 1Ghz Single Core and 512mb of RAM, so that is a good baseline for PSX emulators and Mupen64Plus AE. For N64oid, I would suggest a device with a 1Ghz Dual Core Processor and 512mb of RAM (such as the Kindle Fire) or better. The Sony Xperia Play was made to emulate PSX games and comes with a pretty nifty controller built in, however the phone is a bit out dated by now. As for tablets, go with the Nexus 7. If you're on the super-cheap, try the Chinese Droid X360. It has specs similar to the Xperia Play, and has the controls of the PS Vita. Pretty nifty, and only $120! (However, keep in mind being cheap and Chinese, the controls are a bit stiff. The touch screen is still quite responsive, though). Q. Can I play multiplayer games on the Emulator? A. Depends on the emulator. It needs to be able to use at least two controllers at the same time (or one controller and the on screen controls at the same time). N64oid can do this. (Mario Party: Throwing your phone at a wall edition). If the other player has an Android phone, BT Controller will come in handy here. Q. Do I really need a controller for Emulators? A. No, the touch screen controls are usable. But I very highly suggest getting one, and some like the Game Gripper are not very expensive. Q. X Emulator is too slow or does not work, what do I do? A. Play around with the settings to see if you can improve the frame rate. If not, you might just be out of luck. You can try overclocking if possible. On N64oid, disable fog effects and play with the max frame skips settings. If you are on ICS/JB, go into settings -> Developer Options -> Enable Force GPU Rendering. Q. Can I use my USB controller with my Android? A. Probably not. [del]To my knowledge, only the Motorola Xoom and Toshiba Thrive are capable of this. Correct me if I'm wrong, however.[/del] However, some controllers such as the PS3 controller and wired Xbox 360 controller are known to work on some apps, but is rather fickle to get working correctly. Most controllers that fully work are "Plug 'n Play" controllers that do not require drivers. Q. Can I emulate PC Games as well? A. Yes, there is a port of DosBox for Android for older PC games. You could theoretically get newer versions of Windows through DosBox, but I highly doubt you would be able to get games working with it. Q. I want X game/emulator ported to Android, what do I do? A. If it's open source, do it yourself or make a request in the XDA forums. Otherwise, the most you can do is ask the developers or hope someone makes a clone of it. ------------------------------------------------------------ And that's all! Have fun!

Neato OP. But why isn't FPse there? It's way better than PSX4Droid.

Not necessary, but you should probably mention that all types of Wii controllers work with any device with bluetooth. It makes playing N64 games, way way easier (with the Wii Classic Controller, anyway)
I think from Android 4.0 you get native support for PS3 controllers via USB. I'm gonna check out the smartphone controller app though, that looks cool.
I was able to play with PSX 4 Droid on my Huawei U8500 once. And only once. Other times it just crashed. 528MHz CPU and 192MB of RAM. FPS was at 15 though. But it ran Crash Bandicoot well enough for me to play it for 15 minutes on a bus trip before my battery was dead.

Huh, odd. It seems the original PSP used a MIPS processor, but the PS Vita uses an Cortex A9 ARM.

I really quite enjoy Angry Birds. I think most people on here hate popular games. It's fun, looks good and has addicting gameplay. Angry Birds space is lots of fun on my Nexus 7.
I am using N64Oid and the sound on it is really laggy/messed up. Are there any other good N64 emulators out there?
N64Oid seems to be the only good one out there, that I can find. The last one I tried destroyed my phone with ads, I had 3 in my fucking notifications bar because of it. It was like adware.

Have you disabled fog effects? Have you played with Max Frame Skips? Some devices run better with it lower rather than higher. The dev suggests setting it to four, however on my Thrive setting it to one seems to run a heck of a lot better.
Acer Iconia A500 It's a tegra 2 tablet
Yeah, go to Engine Settings and turn fog effects off. Go to Max Frame Skips, start at the bottom, and move your way up until it's as smooth as you can get it.
Also I use Droidemu for my emulator needs now. And Wii Controller thingy, what lets you to connect your Wiimote with your phone over bluetooth really easily.
I love you.
I always wanted an app for this for Apple iOS, but I never saw one. I'm going to have loads of fun with this, no doubt.
Added Wii controllers, FPse, and DroidEmu to the OP. [editline]24th July 2012[/editline] Also changed the minimum specs suggested for the PSX emulators; the Xperia Play only had a 1Ghz single core and 512mb of RAM. I know it can definitely run it, so what's the problem?
I really hate how this is "not compatible" with my Transformer tablet. I know it can definitely run it, so what's the problem?
Try downloading the app on another device, and transferring the apk to your tablet.
Ironically the PS3 controller connected via Bluetooth works better than the USB one. :v: Also added a few games to the O.P.
N64 games are so awkward on a PS3 controller, it's hard to work out controls.
Not really no. I set the C buttons to the directional buttons on the right, A and B to the left and right trigger buttons, Z and R to the left and right bumpers, L to the left analog click, dpad to dpad, start to start, etc. Works really well and isn't too hard to get used to.
