At the stroke of a pen Thursday afternoon, Maryland became the eighth state to legalize same sex marriage.
Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, Senate President Mike Miller and House Speaker Michael Busch signed the Civil Marriage Protection Act of 2012 during a signing ceremony on the first floor of the State House. The General Assembly passed the bill at the end of last month.
"We are one Maryland, and all of us, at the end of the day, want the same thing for our children. We want them to live in a loving caring, and committed home that is protected equally under the law. Let's sign the bill."
- Gov. Martin O'Malley
Prior to singing the bill, O'Malley spoke before a standing-room-only crowd, saying, "For a free and diverse people, for people of many faiths, for a people committed to the principle of religious freedom, the way forward is always found through greater respect for the equal rights of all, for the human dignity of all."
"Religious freedom is the very reason for our state's founding, and at the heart of religious freedom is the freedom of individual conscience. If there is a thread that unites all of our work here together, it is the thread of human dignity, the dignity of work, the dignity of the job, the dignity of every child's home, the dignity of every individual. We are one Maryland, and all of us, at the end of the day, want the same thing for our children. We want them to live in a loving caring, and committed home that is protected equally under the law. Let's sign the bill."
An amendment to the original bill postpones the first same sex ceremonies until January 2013. Same sex marriage supporters assume they will have another hurdle to jump as the law is expected to be petitioned to referendum in November.
Supporters at the bill signing said "this will end state-sanctioned discrimination."
The Maryland Board of Elections approved the language for a referendum question to put the issue before the voters in November.
Opponents of same sex marriage vow to collect almost 56,000 signatures needed to put the measure on the ballot. They are expected to rely heavily on churchgoers who oppose same sex marriage as a matter of faith.
Organizers said they hope to collect nearly double the required number of signatures to ensure enough are validated by the Board of Elections.
People that oppose this just make me sick. They have no backing except things in the Bible. For Christians, what happened to following Jesus and loving everyone regardless of who they are? People are so fucking narrow minded to think that two people in love getting married is wrong. In America, those who oppose separation of church and state are in my opinion not fit to live in this country, it's in the constitution.
the bible says not to eat a pig but most conservative christians do that eh. im glad to see this get passed, but its terrible that people actually thinks this effects them
Governor sounds like a really cool and nice guy. At least he believes in what's best for people, unlike those who oppose it because their church said it was bad.
'Mary" sounds like" marry", but also "merry", which shares a meaning with "gay." These are puns.

It's sad that people worry about this over murder or rape. People consider this to be the worst sin you can ever commit or something. Pretty sure murder and blasphemy is worse than loving somebody of the same gender, sheesh.

He's not all that great, I didn't vote for him, but he is in this aspect.
So....how many states left to go?
This is such a non-issue.
Gays getting married aren't going to make straights divorce.
But regardless, there will be a voter referendum for it in Maryland, along with Washington, as some people just don't understand it's not going to infringe on their rights.
Who wants to take bets that Santorum (heh) is going to be in Maryland soon campaigning that the whole country is going to hell because of gays?
So....how many states left to go?
42?
42?
In other words: too damn many.
-snip for senseless joke that I don't even really get looking back-
But yeah, seriously, I think I died a little looking at that Facebook page

It just goes to show that they view the inconvenience of not eating pork in higher value than the inconvenience of knowing two homosexuals who love each other can get married.
wow guys now that we did this you're gonna see people marrying cats and dogs and frogs now
HEY
HEY WHY CAN... WHY CAN THEY DO THAT
OF COURSE IT AFFECTS ME, MY HORSE I DRIVE TO WORK WILL EAT MY OTHER HORSE I USE FOR PROCREATING
/redneck

If that was supposed to be a joke it makes no sense.
That said, good on Maryland for doing the right thing.
From the facebook page "That's Maryland for you! Right for all including illegal immigrants, murders, and corrupt politicians!"
Yes being gay is on the same level as being an illegal immigrant, murderer, or corrupt politician. I hate knowing people like that live here.
gay marriage should be legal everywhere when the fuck are people gonna get over it? probably never
progression and the elimination of the broken christian state and hopefully in the future, the reinforcement of the separation of church and state...

People are fucking idiots. I can't even read the comments anymore. That Sherry person, commented right after this was posted on Facebook, does nothing but post anti gay shit on the news stations' webpages around here. I urge you to message her like I do. The one that was like "this is sick."

Eh, I dunno, I'm tired. But yeah, basically I called the anti-gay people ignorant long story short

Radicals will come out of the woodwork on this.
I grew up in a pretty conservative family who used to throw gay slurs for any dislike of a person. Now they say that it's a non-issue and that everyone has to move on, as they did. This isn't the end of the world, there are better things for people to concern themselves with rather than two people who want to get married.

I just don't get it. Why are people against it? I don't think they even know.

Because it's icky, duh!
Honestly, I can't believe this isn't approved on the federal level. I mean, the hypocrisy is rife when a nation that champions personal freedoms, total equality and acceptance doesn't allow gay dudes tie the knot. Hell, openly gay people couldn't even fight for their country until last year.

Yeah it's the same as rights for blacks or asians or whatever. Same damn concept.

Agreed. I'd call it pathetic, but that's an understatement.

Wait a second, there's still racial discrimination in America? I don't mean, like, some redneck dude who hates black guys, I mean official policy. That's fucking ludicrous!

At least they don't have the government restricting their lives. They just have assholes saying shit to them and whatnot. Gays are currently not allowed to get married in most states. Fucked up. I thought civil rights laws were taken care of in the 60's?
wow guys now that we did this you're gonna see people marrying cats and dogs and frogs now
Yeah, and worst of all, some of them might be the same gender.
What is the world coming to?
Should it be passed on a Federal level? Yes. Can it? Afraid not.
A social issue as controversial as same sex marriage has to be handled on a state by state basis if you want to see it in your state any time soon. It's very hard to get favorable nationwide consensus on it at one time.
Eventually, there may be a ruling on the federal level, but I think it's great that the more liberal leaning (more intelligent) states are enacting this now on their own.
I just don't get it. I mean, many of the other major western nations have approved gay marriage, and America is, like, the King of the West in their eyes. Goddamn, this world man...
the bible says not to eat a pig but most conservative christians do that eh. im glad to see this get passed, but its terrible that people actually thinks this effects them
It's good that this passed but
What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.'"
I don't base my hate on homosexuals by the bible or anything else. I base it on how my day revolves around getting complimented by single homosexuals. It irritates the fuck out of me and if I say anything they make up an excuse about arresting me for 'harrassment of a gay person.' What the fuck?
